As usual this is done very quickly and using shorthand for my benefit. There will be factual and typographical errors on this page. Do not quote me on any of this. It's for my personal use to help me better understand the Bakken. Do not read it. If you do happen to read it, do not make any investment, financial, job, relationship, or travel plans based on anything you read here or think you may have read here. If this stuff is important to you, and I doubt that it is, but if it is, go to the source. These are cases to be considered by the NDIC, not permits. If approved by the NDIC, then operators can go ahead and submit permits to drill wells within the parameters of the cases that were passed.

RBN Energy: major changes disrupting global oil and refined product flows. Link here. Archived.

Since early 2026, crude oil and refined product flows have been fundamentally rerouted both within the U.S. and around the world, with more changes still to come. The disruption of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and sweeping changes in Venezuela's export strategy have dramatically reshaped trade flows in just six months. At the same time, refinery closures along the U.S. West Coast and new product pipelines headed there will send barrels down paths they haven’t traditionally traveled, reshaping both domestic and even global markets in the process. In today’s RBN blog, we look at these major shifts and what they could mean going forward.

Most recently in Waiting on the World to Change, we discussed our newly released Future of Fuels report, which forecasts lower global crude oil prices and a potential rollback in U.S. production in the next few years. Today’s blog offers another look at some of the key developments examined in our report. Three issues stand out. The Strait of Hormuz, Venezuela, and plans for a new wave of pipelines into the West Coast have already shaken up the market in a big way, with more changes to come; we'll tackle them one at a time.

As we’ve addressed in the RBN blogosphere, the Trump administration’s actions against Iran and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz seriously impacted global crude and product markets, not least of which is the massive Pacific Basin fuels market. With the strait now substantially blocked for almost all of the past four-plus months (see Eyes of the Ranger), large volumes of Persian Gulf crude oil, LPG, naphtha and refined products bound for Asia were suddenly stranded, forcing refiners in South Korea, India and elsewhere to cut runs and curb gasoline and jet fuel exports (see Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad). As of late July, with on-and-off hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, the strait’s outlook continues to be uncertain, with the picture seemingly changing by the day.

U.S. gasoline, diesel and jet fuel exports have helped plug part of the hole left by disrupted Persian Gulf flows. An interim deal between the U.S. and Iran in June briefly calmed tensions, and as Figure 1 below shows, crossings rebounded sharply later that month. But it did not last. Even during periods when the Strait of Hormuz has technically remained open, traffic has been sparse and vulnerable to disruption. The week of July 6 highlighted that reality and it’s been uncertain since that time (red bars to far right). Three tankers were struck by projectiles or drones on July 7, leading the U.S. to revoke the temporary license that had allowed Iranian oil sales under the cease-fire agreement and launch a new round of strikes against Iran. Vessel traffic quickly thinned out. Before the conflict, there were typically 130 to 135 ships daily, counting inbound and outbound traffic. On July 8, when President Trump declared the cease-fire over, Kpler recorded just 24 tanker transits, including inbound and outbound movements.

Citadel And Situational Awareness -- Citadel Had It -- The Hedge Fund Situational Awareness Did Not -- Irony, I Guess -- July 30, 2026

This was the "first take" by a lot of folks. I didn't know what to think, how to phrase it, how to articulate what Citadel did, but this is what started it all:

If you don't know the story, query Citadel and the billion-dollar Situational Awareness hedge fund started by a 20-something whiz-kid -- and the went bust:

I believe that was from earlier this morning.

But here's a reply that makes sense of all this:

Ya gotta love it.

The Book Page

Tonight, a recent purchase from "Friends of the Library," Portland, OR, three new books for less than $15 --

  • Metazoa: Animal Life and The Birth of the Mind, Peter Godfrey-Smith, c. 2020. $4.00 (original: $28.00).

First four pages and I'm hooked.

It's an origin of life book. If not -- I haven't read enough to know for sure -- it's a book what will immediately have you start pondering some very deep questions. particularly, just how / why is "life" different than "non-life." The ability to replicate is obvious but the difference between "life" and "non-life" is so much different. Let's say a rock could replicate itself -- but so what? There's still so much more.

Anyway, it's going to be a fascinating book.

Are sponges plant or animal? And how was it conclusively proven?

Rambling thought: GDP missed analysts' estimates. Link here. But the headline was worse than the story. Estimate: 1.8%. Actual, 1.5%. But it must concern the Fed about raising rates and killing the economy completely when the problem is something the Fed cannot control:

Thursday’s gross domestic product report included positive signs on other fronts. Consumers increased their spending, shrugging off a surge in gas prices fueled by the conflict with Iran. Business investment remained strong as companies kept investing in IT equipment and software for the AI build-out.

WTI tonight dropped to under $83. The actual number is irrelevant -- don't take that out of context -- it's the direction of movement that's important. It's very possible that CVX will trade lower tomorrow. I have no idea what it might mean that WTI is trending down right now, albeit not by much.

Others:
  • PSX: today up strong, futures green, albeit not by much.
  • COP: today up 1%; futures green tomorrow at 0.6%.
  • XOM: up today but inconsequential; futures, much better tomorrow.
  • TTE: flat.
  • OXY: negative today.
  • DVN: negative / flat.

The oil story simply makes no sense

Amazon -- incredible! Wow, when you scroll through x and the other articles on Amazon / AMZN -- the superlatives blow you away

Micron -- amazing! Tim Cook said Apple is "evaluating all options," as the DRAM market remains concentrated among just MU, SKHY and Samsung.

Apple -- best July quarter ever! Jim Cramer: Apple's issues are all memory and currency ... sticking with it. Loved that Amazon call. Shay: Michael Burry is concerned. Very concerned.

These are very, very interesting times. For an investor with a 30-year horizon, it's hard to beat Apple. Amazon similarly, but doesn't return cash to investors, as far as I can tell. Micron? Is this just a short-term event? Five years or less? No clue.

So, a guessing game. From CNBC, after the close today, a semiconductor company, and the narrative for some is better than the numbers::

    Amazon

Shay is incredibly bullish on Amazon. Link here

And, then there's Apple. Nothing to add.

RBN Energy: variations in crude oil quality make on-spec delivery critical for global refiners. Link here. Archived.

Crude oil — often mistakenly described as a single, standardized commodity — is anything but uniform. Every stream has its own chemical fingerprint, including differences in density, sulfur content and a host of other qualities. Those variations can have real consequences for refiners, traders and the folks who move the stuff around. In today’s RBN blog, we’ll dig into why crude quality matters and how it can make a real difference to the bottom line.

Let’s start with the basics. Crude quality is often measured by two main traits: density and sulfur content. Density is measured using API gravity, indicated in degrees (°). A higher API number means lighter crude, while a lower API number indicates the opposite. In general, crude oils above about 35° API are considered light (blue-shaded rows in Figure 1 below); those between roughly 25° and 35° API fall into the medium category (pink-shaded rows); and anything lower is heavy (green-shaded rows).

Iran strikes: resume again, by US and Saudi Arabia, 8:00 p.m. ET tonight. Data continues to suggest that his has been a less-than-half-hearted effort by US allies other than Israel. Either folks in Washington, DC, have not read or not following the writings of Sun Tzu, The Art of War.  From today's WSJ, how many times have we heard this? Is the administration admitting that it purposely failed to take out Iran's missile capability -- the one that killed American soldiers last week?

Now, as Trump moves to strike back after Iran’s surprise missile attack Tuesday, the president will decide how far to go. He could greenlight Cooper’s option of 10 to 14 days of intensive airstrikes intended to cripple Iran’s missile capability despite warnings that the U.S. is running low on air-defensive munitions. Or, he could opt for a more limited military strike in the hopes diplomacy could be pursued

Before we get to tech, breaking news, two hours ago, Trump has just commented on it:

    The solution is obvious.

The IRGC has just gone rogue. Link here. He’s just now figuring it out. This has been obvious for years to anyone paying attention. Apparently Trump had to let the IRGC make it even more obvious. Hamas, Hezbollah, and the IRGC. The problem for Trump: no center of gravity. For the IRGC, this is survival vs martyrdom and 70 virgins.

I wanted to post this note yesterday but I ran out of time.

Mom-and-pop retail investors have quit investing in BRKB.

Meanwhile, mom-and-pop traders have found BRKB as a safe haven to park money during particularly volatile times.

    That pretty much explains everything.

For me? I park money in dividend-paying ETFs: SCHB, SCHD, SCHG, and IHE.

There will be footnote to this story if things develop tomorrow the way analysts expect things to unfold.

    BRKB: not a safe haven.

I've never paid much (any?) attention to the Fed, but now after about ten years of listening to Steve Liesman, Trump, Jamie Dimon, Jay Powell, and, now Kevin Warsh, my thoughts: the "Fed" as it stands now could easily be replaced by one man, Jamie Dimon. If you wanted two: Jamie Dimon and Warren Buffett. If you need three, to break a tie, add CNBC's Steve Liesman.

    Destroying Rare Books

There was a story in the press this past week that a company was destroying old, and rare books, often only one copy left in the world, to scan them and train their chatbots on.

Bothers me not. IYKYK. In fact, I'm thrilled. On so many levels. It is the words that are important, not the physical medium.

Anticipation: chatbots are exponentially better than legacy search engines, and "everybody" is using a chatbot -- at least anyone using "search." A simple query resulted in this reply. The "old Google" couldn't do this.

Chatbots are chipping (no pun intended) away at "paywalls." Every time I come upon a story that interests me but blocked by a "paywall," I go to chatbot and "nine times out of ten" I succeed.

While investors are worried about "circular financing," the world is moving on.

You can howl at the wind, but AI is here to stay. This will be the quietest revolution in human history.

RBN Energy: how much natural gas will reach the southeast followign these big new projects? Link here. Archived.

One of the seminal energy-related political controversies of the past decade was the construction of Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP). Before entering service in June 2024, the 2-Bcf/d pipeline project faced a number of regulatory hurdles and went through countless rounds of litigation, ultimately culminating in a high-profile Senate showdown. Since becoming fully operational, MVP has filled up seasonally in the winter, but much of its capacity has remained unused in the shoulder season because of constraints downstream on Transco, frustrating an Appalachian market that yearns for growth. Now, three new projects aim to debottleneck Transco and get more gas flowing to the Southeast: Transco’s Southeast Supply Enhancement as well as MVP Southgate and MVP Boost, both of which are being developed by the co-owners of MVP. But beyond nameplate capacity numbers, how much will these projects really enable gas to go outside the Northeast and find new markets? In today’s RBN blog, we will discuss the impact of these projects and estimate their impact on future flows into North Carolina and beyond.

We have been tracking these projects for some time now, both in our weekly NATGAS Appalachia report and in recent blogs like Don’t Stop Believin’. To recap, the Southeast Supply Enhancement (SSE) comprises 55 miles of pipeline looping and other improvements that will add 1.6 Bcf/d of capacity to Williams Cos.’ Transcontinental Pipeline (Transco) along three paths, each extending south from Station 165: to Station 160 in Rockingham County, NC (Path 1; dashed pink line in Figure 1 below); to Station 145 in Cleveland County, NC (Path 2; dashed purple line); and the Station 85 Zone 4 Pool in Choctaw County, AL (Path 3; dashed red line). SSE had its certificate approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) this past January and is expected to be fully in service in the second half of 2027, although Williams management has stated its desire to get some gas to North Carolina ahead of schedule and before the full compression is installed.

    Updates

Later, 5:53 p.m. PT: with all due respect, sir, how many times have we heard this ...

    Original Post

This page has been severely truncated! Way too much happening after darkI will have to get back to it as I have time. At the same time, I've looked at the SK Hynix story. Jim Cramer was exactly right but that doesn't help serious investors. Cramer et al were acting like panicky traders. And, of course that followed "the Google report" which, of course, was completely misread by investors. SK Hynix:

On another note: it is very, very possible that Iran has crossed a major line -- striking American military bases in Jordan during a period of-agreed peace, and on a very solemn day when perhaps Trump's most important political ally, Senator Lindsey Graham was laid to rest. And also on a day that Bibi was in town talking to TACO. Maybe I'm over-reacting but right now but the US oil markets don't seem to have misunderstood what this just met.

Market: wow, what a day! Dow pops 600 points; NASDAQ very volatile. BRK-B had a huge day. I will explain this later. It's the same thing I do, but instead of BRK-B, I park my money in SCHD, SCHG, or SCHB. Lately, I've had another, IHE.

Just a couple of many, many examples today.

Tell Jim Cramer: my favorite external disk drives are Seagate disk drives.
