Biden Leaving Office With US Economy In Great Shape -- Along With All The Other Good News, GDPNow Forecasts 3.0% Growth For President Biden's Last Quarter -- January 17 , 2025

Locator: 44703ECONOMY.

The new president is going to have some incredible numbers to beat:

  • employment continues to grow; most recent report, unemployment ticked lower;
  • inflation story is however one wants to interpret the numbers
  • the equity markets are at near-all-time highs
  • for savers, they haven't had it this good in quite some time
  • the price of gasoline, though expensive, has been trending down
  • and, now, most recent GDPNow figures suggest a 3.0% growth rate for Biden's last quarter as president.

I'm not saying it's the greatest economy of all times, but these are pretty good numbers with which the incoming president's numbers will be compared.

China's Coal Boom -- Daily Newsletter -- Bloomberg -- January 17, 2025

This is not a surprise to anyone following the global energy story.

The figures run contrary to hopes that China may have begun to reduce emissions last year, more than half a decade ahead of its 2030 target, after massive additions of wind and solar power and a rebound in output of hydropower.

But all that extra clean energy wasn’t enough to cope with the expansion in electricity consumption, which was set to outpace overall economic growth for the fifth straight year in 2024 due to strong demand for computing, and as sectors from heating to transport electrify.

The trajectory of electricity demand will be key to determining whether fossil fuel generation begins its decline in 2025. At the same time, China is maintaining its world-leading pace of renewables deployment, and is spending more on power lines and energy storage equipment to ensure the clean energy isn’t wasted.

LOL, taking the same road that Germany took:

It’s increasingly possible that renewable sources can meet all of the country’s new electricity consumption this year, and pave the way for China’s power sector to achieve peak emissions in 2025, said Gao Yuhe, a Beijing-based analyst at Greenpeace East Asia.

But lying through their teeth. LOL.

Spotify

The playlist power broker.

Absolutely fascinating.

The lede:

Every day, no matter where she is, Sulinna Ong puts away her phone, turns off all notifications and lies down on the floor for three hours to listen to new songs.

Ong oversees 130 Spotify employees doing what the service’s powerful algorithms can’t: discovering the best new music and carefully introducing it on playlists to the listeners who are going to devour it. Getting new music into Ong’s ears can rocket an artist’s career.

Ong’s team has been including pop singer Chappell Roan on playlists since 2020, including the top slot in Gen Z favorite “Lorem,” helping position her for a breakout year in 2024 and a Grammy nomination for best new artist. Ong has also championed Doechii, a rapper nominated in the same category, over the past four years. This past week, Doechii had three songs, including “Denial Is a River” and “Nissan Altima,” on a playlist focusing on women in rap called “Feelin’ Myself.”

Ong calls her music-discovery routine, which she’s done daily for the past three years, “structured music listening.” She sifts through new music that artists or their representatives submit, looking for songs to populate the thousands of playlists her team publishes each week. Her job isn’t so much about having a singular, influential taste as having a vision of what will work where, when and for whom.

Streaming, now ubiquitous through Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and social-media platforms like TikTok, has fragmented the listening experience, with fans able to delve into niches that may not be broadly popular. Long gone are the days when Top-40 radio hosts and MTV VJs set the agenda for the public at large.

Biden: I have no problem with Biden's latest commutations, but it's almost as if the Big Guy has morphed from whatever he was to someone with a God complex.

Location, location, location: I've always considered BofA to be a California bank, like Wells Fargo. But now, BofA is, of course, regional but now headquartered in North Carolina.

Now, we have the unprecedented fires in southern California. One wonders if there are dots to connect.

RBN Energy: gas markets players seek optionality with new Gulf pipelines

Natural gas production in the Permian is still on a roll — increasing so fast that midstream infrastructure can barely keep up. But producers, marketers and shippers want more than new takeaway capacity. They also need to know that the pipeline systems they sign up with can reliably move their gas to markets where they can get the best price. Put simply, they are demanding optionality. In today’s RBN blog, we discuss the optionality provided by a WhiteWater Midstream-led joint venture’s (JV) expanding gas pipeline network in Texas, including a brand-new project between the Agua Dulce and Katy gas hubs that’s in the works.
