Comparing Apples And Oranges -- October 20, 2020

Another glowing review of the new Apple iPhone 12 smartphones. Link here. There's definitely a different level of (positive) anticipation regarding these new phones. Comparing apples and oranges:
GM is on a huge CAPEX spending spree, announcing yet another new EV factory, this will be their third in just the past few months;

  • P/E:
    • GM: 33
    • AAPL: 36
  • dividend:
    • GM: none
    • AAPL: 0.76%
  • cash flow, quarterly:
    • GM: a negative $10 billion
    • AAPL: $60 billion

So many story lines. I'm just blown away by the fact that GM and AAPL have essentially the same P/E. I'm way too biased but it just seems to me the excitement over the iPhone 12 is unprecedented except perhaps with that seen with iPhone 6. Combine the excitement with the new phone plus 5G and it certainly seems this could really be incredible.

Folks who still have jobs have a lot of money to spend. $/GB storage these phones are actually less expensive than the previous corresponding phones. Folks are looking for something exciting, anything to take their minds off politics and Chinese flu. I'm seeing literally no negative reviews of the iPhone 12.

We won't see this when Apple reports this quarter's numbers but next quarter's results should be amazing.

Apple iPhone 12 update (previously posted):

  • Securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo suggests iPhone 12 Pro demand is higher than expected. Link here
  • iPhone 12 Pro pre-orders are already selling out. Link here. Others have suggested that when the Apple site when live to begin taking orders for the iPhone 12, the supply of iPhone 12's were sold out in twelve minutes
  • Taiwanese carriers believe that sales of iPhone 12 models will be the strongest since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Link here.

By the way, how much is it costing Apple to put 5G into their phones. Over time, the cost is coming down, but as recently as August 22, 2020, this was the breakdown:

Back to 5G. I don't know if folks remember, but the other day I posted a video to explain mineral rights to a reader. During that video, I had to "re-fresh" a graphic on my computer. The re-fresh took several seconds. With 5G that will never, never, never, ever happen again. The re-fresh will literally be instantaneous.

Previously posted, link here: why the iPhone 12 could be a runaway seller.

Are we seeing this kind of enthusiasm for GM?

And the P/E for GM and AAPL almost the same at 33 - 36.

Pioneer To Buy Parsley; Another All-Stock Deal -- October 20, 2020

I forgot to post until a reader reminded me: Pioneer to buy Parsley.

Pioneer Natural Resources Co. as agreed to buy Parsley Energy Inc. for $4.5 billion, the latest in a flurry of U.S. oil tie-ups as companies seek to weather low prices brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

The all-stock deal, which values Parsley at a 7.9% premium to its closing value Monday, would solidify Pioneer’s place as one of the largest producers in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico, the top American oil field.

The long-anticipated string of transactions is expected to continue for healthier companies in the country’s most prolific oil fields, investors said, while many smaller, debt-burdened companies that are hoping for a deal may draw few offers.

Pioneer Chief Executive Scott Sheffield said in an interview Tuesday that size and scale would be key to surviving as an independent oil-and-gas producer as the world transitions away from fossil fuels, and for his company would help it return more cash to shareholders. But he said additional combinations of industry players may take time.

“I do not see much more coming until these other companies can deliver with excess cash flow over the next two or three years,” he said.

“The combination of Parsley and Pioneer creates an organization set to thrive as we forge a strong new link at the low end of the global cost curve,” Parsley Chief Executive Matt Gallagher said in a statement. He is poised to join the combined company’s board of directors
