Ramblings -- September 6, 2023

Locator: 45533B.

I'm sitting here watching a documentary on "The Ventures," having just completed a five-day round trip to Philadelphia and return to north Texas. Don Wilson of "The Ventures" died 2022. This is 2023. Who knew?

One of the best music documentaries ever. Inexpensive production. Great story. Highly recommend.

What a great country.

I wonder how many folks -- on a road trip, no air travel -- can say they visited Gettysburg on a Friday afternoon and Shiloh on the following Monday afternoon.

Back to "The Ventures."

It's a documentary on Amazon Prime Video.

Incredible.

I have a "love-hate" relationship with CNBC. Tonight (September 6, 2023), Jim Cramer had a monologue on the Fed and JPow. Jim Cramer, again, got it exactly right.

Our next five-day road trip? Chicago. First day to St Louis. Overnight. Then drive into Chicago on Friday to visit the art museum(s). Back to Kankakee overnight. Back into Chicago for Saturday and more museums.. Depart Chicago area sometime late Saturday / early Sunday to return to north Texas.

A Highlight Near Shiloh

After Shiloh, we wanted dinner at Chick-Fil-A. Amazing. There's a Chick-Fil-A in Corinth. On top of everything else, we loved the southern hospitality. Seriously.

*****************
Beer

A reader sent me a note with regard to beer. Lots of mention of lite beers. Can't stand them (lite beers). I prefer crafts beers, and I prefer IPA beers. Tonight, enjoying an India pale ale (IPA), northeast Texas, "Hop and Sting," brewed -- can you believe this -- in Grapevine, TX. I've visited the brewery. Here’s another crafts beer: brewed in Dallas.

Thoughts On Shiloh, Gettysburg

Gettysburg: big disappointment. It appears the Union not particularly interested.

Shiloh: incredible. Confederate moms, daughters, sisters, wives understood. Sad day for the Union's legacy. Grant could have done better.

Politics: US politics during this entire period -- 1850 - 1965, atrocious. The Union could have done better.

Destinations: both Gettysburg and Shiloh are destinations. Both require huge expense -- time and money -- to visit.

  • the two-hour drive from the main road to Gettysburg: lots of zigs and zags through residential settings
  • the two-hour drive from the main road to Shiloh: straight, relaxing, serene

Gettysburg: all about the bookstore.

Shiloh
: all about the story.

Corinth, MS, hospitality: awesome.

Gettysburg: no plans to visit again.

Shiloh: would visit again, if opportunity presented; perhaps with Laura's twins in 2033.

Market Is Having Huge Sell-Off -- Biden Owns This Sell-Off -- WTI Trending Toward $90 -- September 6, 2023

Locator: 45546INV.

One bright spot for some investors: oil!

But price of oil and share prices of E&P are showing huge divergence.

The market is having a huge sell-off today and this time it can clearly be blamed on President Biden.

Huge buying opportunity.

This now explains Gina Raimondo's "emergency trip" to China last week. The Biden administration saw this coming months ago.

Generative AI -- Most Important Story This Year With Regard To Generative AI? September 6, 2023

NVDA: this WSJ story is "all about" NVDA. Link here.

WASHINGTON—The Pentagon is considering the development of a vast network of AI-powered technology, drones and autonomous systems within the next two years to counter threats from China and other adversaries.

Kathleen Hicks, the deputy secretary of defense, will provide new details in a speech later Wednesday about the department’s plans to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to develop an array of thousands of air-, land- and sea-based artificial-intelligence systems that are intended to be “small, smart, cheap.”

The U.S. is seeking to keep pace with China’s rapidly expanding military amid concerns that the Pentagon bureaucracy takes too long to develop and deploy cutting-edge systems.

“We’re not at war. We are not seeking to be at war, but we have to be able to get this department to move with that same kind of urgency because the PRC isn’t waiting,” Hicks said during an interview Tuesday, referring to the People’s Republic of China.

One approach could be to build on the capabilities demonstrated by Task Force 59, the U.S. Navy’s network of drones and sensors designed to monitor Iran’s military activities in the Middle East.

“Imagine distributed pods of self-propelled [autonomous] systems afloat, powered by the sun and other virtually limitless resources, packed with sensors aplenty, enough to give us new, reliable sources of information in near-real-time,” Hicks is expected to say during the speech before a conference hosted by Defense News in Arlington, Va.

Other capabilities that are being considered are autonomous ground-based systems to provide logistics, space-based autonomous systems that would be so numerous they would be difficult for an adversary to destroy and autonomous systems that could defend against incoming missiles.

Autonomous systems use artificial intelligence to detect and engage enemy targets, and can include self-piloting air- and sea-based drones. The Defense Department has long invested in such systems—including self-piloting ships and no-crew aircraft.

Hicks’s speech is expected to include important new details about the “Replicator” initiative the Pentagon announced last week to offset the growing Chinese military.

DOD has deeper pockets than Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet (GOOG), CMCSA combined.

Just saying.

Su’s latest positive commentary is noteworthy. A month ago during an earnings call on Aug. 1 she said AI customer engagements had increased by more than seven times in the last quarter. A further improvement in interest would be sign the market hasn’t topped out yet.
At the Goldman conference, the CEO emphasized AMD is one of the few companies that offers a complete AI technology portfolio across chips and software. She said AMD also has the supply chain relationships to secure the capacity required—including in advanced chip packaging and advanced memory chips—to be a big player in AI semiconductor market.
Finally, the executive reiterated her expectation the market for AI accelerators in data centers will reach $150 billion by 2027. And she confirmed AMD’s upcoming MI300 AI accelerator was on track to launch during the fourth quarter.

Apple, ARM, link here:

Apple, ARM, link here:

"We have entered into a new long-term agreement with Apple that extends beyond 2040, continuing our longstanding relationship of collaboration with Apple and Apple's access to the Arm architecture," said Arm in the IPO document.
Arm's hardware underpins all of Apple's custom silicon processors such as the A15 in the iPhone 14 and the M2 in the MacBook Pro, since Apple licenses the Arm instruction set.
The document reveals that companies including Apple, AMD, Google, Intel, Nvidia, Samsung, and TSMC, have "indicated an interest" in buying "up to an aggregate" of $735 million in Arm shares.
TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, has said it will decide this week whether to invest in the chip designer.
By holding Arm's shares, chipmakers will hope to have sway over Arm's management.
Japan-based SoftBank has been preparing for an IPO since its plan to sell Arm to Nvidia became subject to regulatory scrutiny. California-based Nvidia in January 2022 abandoned the purchase when it became clear that the deal would be blocked by the FTC.

This will be most-anticipated IPO in ten year, and will affect semiconductor sector for next ten years.
