The Large Cap, Familiar Name, Fortune 500 Companies -- A 20-Stock AI ETF -- October 25, 2025

Locator: 49518INVESTING.

Thinking out loud. Rambling. In progress. Dynamic. Scrolling through x. Especially Beth, Shay, and Evan.

For extended family members only and only for those family members interested in investing.  Just doodling while watching a) NASCAR Xfinity's penultimate race; b) the second game of the World Series; c) college football; d) reruns of the "Rockford Files."

Sports today:

  • Vanderbilt defeats Missouri in a humdinger of a game
  • Yamamoto pitches the entire game for the LA Dodgers (104 pitches) -- nine strikeouts; no walks; series tied, 1 - 1;
  • good race but I don't follow NASCAR any more

If six years from now, AI has not provided any major breakthroughs in cancer research it will:

  • tell us how incredibly challenging cancer is as a disease; and,
  • suggesting that cancer researchers are asking the wrong questions.

Only four investment platforms from which to choose:

  • Fidelity
  • Schwab
  • Robinhood
  • SoFi

The ETF.

What Is "The Cloud"?

AI prompt

Have large data centers (LDCs) become "the cloud" for all practical purposes?

Answer

What I need now is "an analogy" to "describe" how big this (AI) is. I'll do that tomorrow if I find time.

The "Mag 7" Are The "Mag 7" For A Reason -- October 25, 2025

Locator: 49516MAG7.

Add this post to this blog.

There's no way around it.

There's a reason the "Mag 7" are the "Mag 7."

The newest wrinkle: TPUs.

Jargon / chips:

  • CPUs: general-use chips that "run" the device (desktop computer, laptop, tablet, wearable).
  • GPUs: optimized for specific functions, but not AI; working alongside CPUs
  • NPUs: optimized for specific functions, specifically AI for "edge" devices.
  • TPUs: optimized for AI in the cloud.

For investors:

  • CPUs are indispensable but this is not where the investment action is
  • GPUs is where the action is -- Nvidia; AMD has pivoted from emphasis on CPUs to emphasis on GPUs;
  • NPUs: pretty much an "edge device" chip; android vs Apple
  • TPUs: a "cloud device" chip;

TPUs: NPUs and NPUs are both involved in AI, but NPUs are "edge" chips; TPUs are "cloud" chips

TPUs will gradually replace GPUs for AI use in the cloud but the transition will take time

I track TPUs here

AI prompt

I assume Google designs, markets, sells their TPUs, but who actually does the manufacturing -- the fab?

Answer: link here.

There's a reason the "Mag 7" are the "Mag 7."

Read this answer again (same answer as at the link above):

There's a reason the "Mag 7" are the "Mag 7":

  • why TSMC and not Samsung or Intel? Answered above.
  • TPUs: will eventually replace GPUs for AI in the cloud.
    • only company that matters right now when it comes to TPUs: Google
    • Every generation of TPU has been fabbed at TSMC.

My only question .... and it's another dig at BRK-B: where were Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett these past ten years?

And, again, each of the Mag 7 has their own niche.

Jim Cramer has a segment "am I diversified?" which I think is incredibly corny. But perhaps not.

I could argue that if one has a portfolio of five stocks and the five are in the "Mag 7" one is still diversified.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To A Chatbot -- October 24, 2025

Locator: 49515SEARCH.

COTD.

For years I've used Google but it's mostly for checking out facts. Nothing very sophisticated.

But when I was steered to ChatGPT everything changed.

I quit using "search" simply for fact-checking. I started using search for much more involved queries, gradually asking for deep explanations on topics as diverse as investing and British history.

I know I'm not alone. All this talk about AI has resulted in an explosion in the field of search. We may not see some of the large data centers come on line for years, but in the meantime, traditional search like Google is going to have to expand significantly to keep up with all the new interest.

It's the opposite of a death spiral. This thing is feeding on itself and that explains a lot of the recent excitement in the US equity markets.

Right now I'm incredibly happy with my investment portfolio. But in many of the cases I cannot explain what is going on. So, now I'm using Google Gemini and ChatGPT to dig deeper. Most of the time I am simply confirming I've made the right investment decision. But more and more, I'm using Gemini and ChatGPT to help me make investment decisions. A lot of that stuff has been there all the time but as I get more and more comfortable with chatbots, the more I use them.

"No Kings Day" -- October 25, 2025

Locator: 49514THERAPY.

The story:

From a Fox News article, psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert said that the "No Kings" protests are a snapshot of an era when emotional catharsis and civic activism have begun to blur.

He, Jonathan Alpert, was most likely correct as far as he went.

According to researchers at American University who track protest movements, and whose findings were first reported by Axios, the typical D.C. attendee was an educated White woman in her 40s who learned about the demonstration through friends or social media

"The 'No Kings' movement allows people to feel belonging and community," Alpert said. "Sharing grievances with like-minded people feels good, but it doesn’t necessarily change anything."

The "typical attendee was an educated White woman in her 40s."

And if one looks at the photos closely, one will notice that the rest of the attendees appeared to be those who "self-identified" as white women in their 40s."

TPUs

One week ago, none of us had heard of "TPUs."

Now, today:

AI prompt: this is a great time to ask, "with whom has Apple partnered for cloud-based AI support?" I think folks might be surprised.
