Monster Wells in the Williston Basin, North Dakota, USA

Note: this page has been completely revamped; some of the "older" comments reference the original "Monster Well" page. [Memo to self: start with 19031; second time through, start with 16119. Also check #16435 later. First Bakken ~15525 (maybe earlier; working backwards, no Bakken wells from 15525 all the way back to 15455).]

Monster wells based on cumulative production, not IPs.

  • 5227, 624, Luff Exploration, Greni 33-26, a Red River well, t11/72; cum 1,275,725 bbls 9/16; this well has a pretty colorful history. I believe it began as a vertical well, was re-entered and two very short laterals were placed; a work-over rig in 2003 significantly increased production. Note that it was drilled in late 1972, and continues to about 1,600 bbls of oil per month, which is what some Bakken wells produce after they end of the severe decline rate and then begin to level off. Is that about 44 years of production? Note: over 1.2 million bbls of oil to date.

I'm betting the latter. If accurate, a huge "thank you" to a reader. This well is NORTHEAST of Watford City. [Turned out to be 25,101 feet long. Yes, a super-long lateral, almost 3 sections long.] Did Lynn Helms misspeak or was he misquoted in The Bismarck Tribune when he said there was a gusher NORTHWEST of Watford City?
