By tomorrow, this story should be everywhere.

By the way, more evidence / reporting / details that DOJ is/was considering action to breakup Google. I could be wrong on that, but that's what I'm reading on twitter. Will need to watch. Probably nothing.

The market! Wow, what a day. US major indices near new records. Oil and oil equities sink. Most surprising (most numbers rounded):

  • NVDA: up 4%; up $5 / share.
  • AAPL: up 2%; up $4 / share.
  • PLTR: up 7%; up $2.50 / share.

Tech, the "Fast Money" panel, not surprising, "seems" confused.

EVs/GM: analyst suggests the $10,000 BYD is / will be a real force, even with a 100% tariff ($20,000) with which American care companies will need to compete. Really?

John Joseph Hopfield (born July 15, 1933) is an American scientist and emeritus professor of Princeton University, most widely known for his study of associative neural network in 1982.

He is known for the development of the Hopfield network. Along with Geoffrey Hinton, in 2024 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on artificial networks. He has been awarded various major physics awards for his work in multidisciplinary fields including condensed matter physics, statistical physics and biophysics.

Geoffrey Everest Hinton (born 6 December 1947) is a British-Canadian computer scientist, and cognitive psychologist most noted for his work on artificial neural networks, which has earned him the title as the "Godfather of AI".

He won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics alongside John Hopfield. From 2013 to 2023, he divided his time working for Google (Google Brain) and the University of Toronto, before publicly announcing his departure from Google in May 2023, citing concerns about the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. In 2017, he co-founded and became the chief scientific advisor of the Vector Institute in Toronto.

The Vector Institute is a private, non-profit artificial intelligence research institute in Toronto focusing primarily on machine learning and deep learning research.

As of 2023, it consists of 143 faculty members and affiliates — 38 of which are CIFAR AI chairs — 57 postdoctoral fellows, and 502 students. Along with the University of Toronto, the Vector Institute is affiliated with faculty from universities across Ontario, as well as British Columbia and Nova Scotia.

Foxconn: to build Nvidia's superchip factory in Mexico.

Is this why NVDA is up 5% in pre-market trading? The story of the day? Samsung. Link here.

Normally a company reporting a nearly fourfold increase in its operating profit is a cause for celebration. Not so for Samsung Electronic, which accompanied its profit forecast on Tuesday with an apology.
Samsung stock fell 1.2% in local trading on the Korea Exchange on Tuesday after its profit forecast for the third quarter fell short of expectations.
While the company was hit by one-off bonus payments, the company also struggled to match some of its rivals in terms of producing advanced chips.
Samsung has lost the lead in high-bandwidth memory chips—a key component in AI processors—to domestic rival SK Hynix. Samsung’s latest HBM memory-chip products are reportedly still being tested for potential incorporation in processors from leading AI-chip maker Nvidia.

Graviton (AWS): link here

AWS Graviton is a family of 64-bit ARM-based CPUs designed by the Amazon Web Services subsidiary Annapurna Labs.
The processor family is distinguished by its lower energy use relative to x86-64, static clock rates, and omission of simultaneous multithreading.
It was designed to be tightly integrated with AWS servers and datacenters, and is not sold outside Amazon.
In 2018, AWS released the first version of Graviton suitable for open-source and non-performance-critical scripting workloads as part of its A1 instance family. The second generation, AWS Graviton2, was announced in December 2019 as the first of its sixth generation instances, with AWS promising 40% improved price/performance over fifth generation Intel and AMD instances and an average of 72% reduction in power consumption.
In May 2022, AWS made available Graviton3 processors as part of its seventh generation EC2 instances, offering a further 25% better compute performance over Graviton2.

Annapurna Labs is an Israeli microelectronics company. Since January 2015 it has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amazon.com.

Amazon reportedly acquired the company for its Amazon Web Services division for US$350–370M.
History Annapurna Labs, named after the Annapurna Massif in the Himalayas, was co-founded in 2011 by Bilic "Billy" Hrvoje, a Bosnian Jewish refugee, Nafea Bshara, an Arab Israeli citizen, and Ronen Boneh with investments from the independent investors Avigdor Willenz, Manuel Alba, Andy Bechtolsheim, the venture capital firm Walden International, Arm Holdings, and TSMC

RBN Energy: are Gulf Coast storage rates high enough to support greenfield projects?

Many of the natural gas storage projects under development along the Gulf Coast involve the expansion of existing salt-cavern complexes and, with that, the sharing of at least some already-built infrastructure. That typically saves money, and the lower capital costs can help make a project a “go.” But at least a few well-sited projects competing for commitments are greenfield in nature and require not just the buildout of storage capacity itself but also the development of compression, freshwater wells, saltwater disposal wells, electricity supply, header pipelines and pipeline interconnections. In today’s RBN blog, we discuss two of the largest greenfield projects in the works: the Black Bayou Energy Hub in southwestern Louisiana and the Freeport Energy Storage Hub (FRESH).
