Setting Us Up For $200 Oil -- June 30, 2015

Well, well, well. Isn't this interesting?

Reuters is reporting:
Massive downward revisions to oil output in Brazil and Iraq have increased the risks for oil markets of going from the current feast to famine within just a few years, leading to a price spike that would give a new boost to the U.S. shale industry.
Brazil and Iraq had been expected to add over 2 million barrels per day to global supply by 2020 and another 2.5 million by 2025, becoming the two biggest contributors to help meet rising global demand, according to the long-term forecast of the International Energy Agency.
On the other hand, in the short term, OPEC is boosting supply. Reuters is reporting: OPEC Crude Production Surges as Iraq Pumps at Record Pace.
Iraqi crude production climbed to a record this month, helping send OPEC output to the highest level since August 2012.

Output by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries climbed 744,000 barrels to 32.134 million a day this month. Last month’s total was revised 189,000 barrels lower to 31.39 million a day, because of changes to the Saudi, Iraqi, Algerian and Nigerian estimates.
Iraqi production rose 567,000 barrels a day to a record 4.388 million this month. Iraq, OPEC’s second-biggest producer, was responsible for more than half of the total gain this month.
Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s top producer, increased output by 150,000 barrels a day to 10.45 million in June, the most in monthly Bloomberg data going back to 1989. [This increase comes after a $35 billion, 5-year program to increase production. So, after announcing this $35 billion program, Saudi sets a record by increasing output by 150,000 bopd, from 10.30 million = a whopping 1.46% increase. Disclaimer holds.]
The kingdom exported more crude because of higher Asian demand.
Iranian production rose 50,000 barrels a day to 2.85 million this month, leaving output at the highest level since March 2014. The nation pumped more than 3.1 million barrels a day from 1991 until July 2012, when additional sanctions were imposed on the Islamic republic to curb its nuclear program.
Iran has estimated it could double exports from about 1 million barrels a day within six months of sanctions being lifted.
Remember: this is a survey of oil executives and analysts; it is a survey.

Meanwhile, Platts is reporting:
China's apparent oil demand* in May increased 8.2% from a year earlier to an average 10.36 million barrels per day (bopd).
Apparent demand during the month was supported by healthy demand growth across all oil product categories.
China's refinery throughput in May averaged 10.38 million bopd, rising 7.4% from a year earlier. On the other hand, China was a net oil product exporter in May, with volumes totaling 120,000 mt.
During the first five months of this year, China's total apparent oil demand averaged 10.45 million b/d, an increase of 5.2% from the same period of 2014. This continues to be the fastest pace of year-to-date growth since 2011 and defies a relatively weak macroeconomic outlook.
"This was the fastest pace of growth since June 2013, when demand grew by 11.53%. Demand for all key products showed year-on-year increase in the month," said Platts Associate Editorial Director for Asia oil news, Mriganka Jaipuriyar.
And then this: look for huge car sales data tomorrow, including a "move away from smaller cars and a further move toward SUVs.

Random Snapshot Of Emerald -- June 30, 2015

I post "snapshots" of companies chronologically (when I remember) at this site:

Emerald Oil (VOG acquires Emerald Oil, announced July 11, 2012)
For newbies, the data points above are newest at the top; oldest at the bottom. The first two bullets are undated, but it's obvious that it was 2012 or earlier.

I posted this because I was surprised at the number of net acres Emerald now controls. I noted this in Filloon's recent contribution over at Seeking Alpha.

EIA Expands Natural Gas Coverage -- June 30, 2015

EIA press release:
Beginning today, the U.S. Energy Information Administration is expanding its reporting of monthly natural gas production by 10 additional states. The addition of these states – Arkansas, California, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, and West Virginia – significantly enhances EIA's monthly coverage, which was previously limited to Alaska, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming, and the Federal Gulf of Mexico.
Accompanying EIA's expanded coverage is a new webpage, Monthly Crude Oil and Natural Gas Production (http://www.eia.gov/petroleum/production/), which replaces the Monthly Natural Gas Gross Production Report. As suggested by the title of the new webpage, EIA will also be using it to report survey-based estimates for monthly crude oil production (including lease condensate) from the states covered by the new EIA-914 survey later this summer, followed by production data categorized by API gravity, an important measure of crude oil quality.
Monthly natural gas production estimates for 15 states, the Federal Gulf of Mexico, and the rest of the country (aggregated and reported as "Other States") are provided for January through April 2015. These estimates are based on data collected from a sample of U.S. operators on the expanded Form EIA-914 (http://www.eia.gov/survey/form/eia_914/form.pdf) survey, with the exception of Alaska, which directly reports its volumes. Monthly production estimates for the expansion states, as with the original individually surveyed states and areas, are available with only a two-month lag; for example, the June release includes production estimates for April 2015. Previously, estimates for these 10 states were delayed by as much as two years.
The expanded geographic scope of the EIA-914 survey is in response to significant increases in U.S. natural gas production over the past several years, as well as important changes in production sources over this period. For example, the original EIA-914 survey, which was initiated in 2005, did not offer individual coverage for states such as Pennsylvania that have undergone transformative natural gas production growth, or for other states that may soon experience significant near-term production increases.
EIA is now reporting data for individual states that represented nearly 90% of total U.S. natural gas production in 2014. Previously, the survey's "Other States" grouping combined natural gas production from 27 states and the Federal Offshore Pacific. This grouping of states accounted for only 17% of total U.S. natural gas gross withdrawals in 2005. That share rose to more than a third (35%) by 2014. Within this group, the 10 expansion states represented 13% of total U.S. natural gas gross withdrawals in 2005 and more than twice that share (32%) in 2014. Production data from these 10 states will now be individually listed in the report.
The remaining 18 states/areas that now make up the aggregated "Other States" grouping (Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, and Federal Pacific) consistently accounted for less than 5% of U.S. natural gas production from 2005 through 2014.
Natural gas production data collected on the EIA-914 survey are used as inputs to several EIA products, including the Natural Gas Monthly and EIA forecasts such as the Short-Term Energy Outlook and the Annual Energy Outlook.

Best Link Of The Day -- Forrest Gump Legislation -- June 30, 2015

... and folks wonder why I have such a negative view when it comes to renewable energy.

This is such an incredible story, one cannot make it up.

But if the Washingtonians enjoy paying higher prices for their electricity, that's fine with me. I think it's pretty funny.

From Forbes:
My local electric utility here in Washington State just raised my base electricity price and are having to buy renewable energy credits because they are required to supply 9% of our electricity from renewable sources next year and we only produce 85% from renewables now.
What?!
Yes, electricity generation in Washington State is 79% hydroelectric, 8% nuclear, 6% wind, 4% coal and 3% gas. We have the most renewable energy generation and the lowest carbon footprint in America and have more than surpassed any reasonable low-carbon goal you could possibly imagine. When our only coal-fired power plant is shut in a few years, carbon emissions will drop even more.
However, unlike the rest of the world, our huge amount of hydropower is not allowed to be recognized as renewable anymore, thus we have to buy wind from another state and throw away hydro-generated electricity when that wind comes online.
And the more you read of this article, the more ridiculous it gets. So that the (artificially) increased price of electricity does not hit the poor more than they can afford, they will get a "break" of some sort, paid for by the rest of the Washington State residents ... who voted for this crazy bill. Or voted for the legislators who enacted this crazy bill.

Thank you, Don, for a great link.

By the way, we still get stories in the mainstream media that renewable energy is becoming as inexpensive as fossil fuel (natural gas and coal). Explain that to the Washington State folks.

As a reminder,

Greece And Rocket Launches: Both Blowing Up -- Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Greece

The AP is reporting: Greece's Varoufakis says IMF won't be paid; Greece's Varoufakis says country will not be paying IMF debt due Tuesday. This should not surprise anyone. The Greeks telegraphed this a few days ago. On June 21, 2015, I posted:
It was reported earlier that the Greeks have said they want the IMF out of Europe. This is the trial balloon / shot across the bow telling the IMF not to expect their $1.8 billion a week from this Tuesday.  But Greece will get that $8.1 billion -- either from Europe, or from Russia.
IMF on the hook; despite Lagarde's initial reluctance, IMF on the hook for Greece. I have no sympathy for the IMF:
As French Finance Minister in 2010, Christine Lagarde opposed the involvement of the International Monetary Fund in Greece.
Now as the country stands on the edge of defaulting on a 1.6 billion euro ($1.8 billion) payment to the Fund, Lagarde's tenure at the head of the IMF since 2011 will be shaped by Greece, which holds a referendum on Sunday that could pave the way to its exit from the euro.
By its own admission the Washington-based institution broke many of its rules in lending to Greece. It ended up endorsing austerity measures proposed by the European Commission and European Central Bank, its partners in the troika of Greece's lenders, instead of leading talks as it had done with other countries such as Russia and in the Asian financial crisis.
This looks like the 2008 US financial crisis all over again.

And now, a two-year deal is being proposed. Sounds like a great headline, until you read that it was proposed by the Greeks.
The failure to pay the IMF was widely expected following the collapse of talks between Greece and its international lenders at the weekend. Had talks over reforms succeeded, Greece could have received a last tranche of aid, which it could have used to pay some of its debts.
Instead, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras surprised lenders at the weekend by calling a snap referendum on Greece's bailout program and austerity measures. The vote is on July 5.
Lenders refused to extend Greece's bailout program until after the vote, prompting anger from Tsipras who is urging the Greek public to vote "no" to more austerity.
The Greek government on Tuesday proposed a new, two-year bailout deal with the European Stability Mechanism. This would be to "fully cover its financing needs and the simultaneous restructuring of debt," according to a translated press release from the office of the Greek Prime Minister.
I think this whole thing could have been avoided if the IMF had simply restructured the debt (euphemism for writing it off over ten years) last week. The IMF is never going to get paid. By not restructuring the debt (euphemism for writing it off over ten years) the IMF simply invites the world's financial "system" begin a death spiral.

What we will now see is a story on every country that has insurmountable debt problems. The first such story / casualty was Puerto Rico.

Tesla's Elon Musk's Rocket Blows Up

From Bloomberg, June 29, 2015
Entrepreneur Elon Musk’s aim to transport astronauts aboard commercial spacecraft was set back Sunday when one of his unmanned cargo rockets exploded in a fireball minutes after launch.
The disintegration of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket -- the latest reminder that there’s no such thing as a routine voyage to space for man or machine -- was the third fiery demise of a vehicle ferrying supplies to the International Space Station since October. SpaceX and Federal Aviation Administration officials are investigating what went wrong in the rocket’s final seconds.
Cargo missions like Sunday’s attempt are part of a NASA quest to open up spaceflight to commercial ventures, with the debut of astronaut trips on private craft operated by SpaceX and Boeing Co. to follow later this decade. The explosion also prevented a cost-savings attempt at guiding the rocket’s spent booster to a vertical landing on an unmanned platform bobbing in the Atlantic Ocean.
Is it just me or do others think the same thing: is this crazy or what?

The US, at one time, was "routinely" sending men to the moon and back, and launching and recovering space shuttles on a regular basis. Now, it appears, "we" can't even launch comparatively "simpler" re-supply missions into low orbit without them blowing up.

I remember a retired Air Force general officer talking to us at Air War College back in 1996, telling us that it was still amazing to him that whenever there was a space launch it was a major television event and folks would clap and shout and cheer when a launch was successful. He thought that we should be at the stage where rocket launches were routine, no different than the airlines since the 1950's or whenever their golden age began.

But here we are, it seems, at the dawn of the space age (again) when we can't even launch a rocket into low earth orbit. We landed a man on the moon back in 1969 and here it is almost 50 years later and we're having trouble launching rockets.

Only one thing comes to mind: cutting corners on cost.

Note: on December 14, 2015, I started putting IPs in blue bold if they were put on the SI/NC list before an IP was reported. If on the DRL list, I left them in red bold.

It's hard to believe that every well that has come off the confidential list since, and including, 2011 has been posted.  That's five years of data from the Bakken. With the transparency of the Bakken and the daily updates from the state, my hunch is that non-industry folks know more about the Bakken than any other oil basin in the world. It has probably created more mom-and-pop millionaires on a per capita basis than any other basin.
