This Is Not News To Regular Readers -- April 23, 2015

Bloomberg is reporting:
Drillers in oil and gas fields from Texas to Pennsylvania have yet to turn on the spigots at 4,731 wells they’ve drilled, keeping 322,000 barrels a day underground, a Bloomberg Intelligence analysis shows. That’s almost as much as OPEC member Libya has been pumping this year
The number of wells waiting to be hydraulically fractured, known as the fracklog, has tripled in the past year as companies delay work in order to avoid pumping more oil while prices are low. It’s kept crude off the market with storage tanks the fullest since 1930. The fracklog may slow a recovery as firms quickly finish wells at the first sign of higher prices.
300,000 bbls. That's per day.

Note The Break-Even Cost In The Eagle Ford -- And Saudi Says Their Oil Is "Cheap" -- April 16, 2015

I forget if I posted this story earlier. The link was sent to me by a reader at a time when I was off the internet for awhile and had forgotten about it. With the news that the bulk of uncompleted wells in the Bakken belong to EOG, the article at this FuelFix link caught my interest:
There are nearly 1,400 wells in the Eagle Ford Shale that have been drilled but not completed.
Oil prices are hovering around $50 per barrel, down by half since last summer. And some Eagle Ford oil producers have been drilling but not fracking wells. The delay in completing wells avoids sending new barrels of oil into a cheap market.
For a small handful of operators, IHS reports that the drilled-but-not-completed wells will give them a big advantage over competitors.
Nearly 40 percent of those 1,400 delayed wells have a break-even costs below $30 per barrel.
The operators include BHP Billiton, Chesapeake, Anadarko Petroleum, EOG Resources, ConocoPhillips and Pioneer Resources.
When I think of the Eagle Ford, I think of EOG.

Another Example Of Choked Back Wells -- North Dakota -- April 3, 2015

There is a lot of activity in this area and it's always possible the well was taken off-line for operational or flaring reason, but note that after a great January, 2015, the well was only on-line for 9 days in February:

Four (4) Away From The Century Mark -- March 23, 2015; Only Four (4) New Permits

We're nearing the century mark on active rigs in North Dakota and yet there are 850 wells waiting to be fracked. It looks like the new metric won't be number of active rigs. A reader sent this link to an excellent story on how US oil industry is responding to low crude oil prices. is reporting: the AP / Yahoo!Finance is reporting. The Bakken is a great laboratory. Many of the data points presented in this article were being worked on well before the price slump; now, the slump in oil prices will simply move things along a bit more quickly.

By the way, note the effective range of fracking -- about 500 feet. Long-time readers know why I highlight that.  Also note, the number of rigs Exxon (XTO) says it plans to keep in the Bakken. On a per acreage basis, I believe almost every operator has cut the number of rigs working in North Dakota, at least by half. If Exxon maintains the same number of rigs, but remains in line with the other operators to reduce the number of rigs / acre, then there's only one option. Think about it.

RBN Energy: refining margins boom as crude inventory hits the roof.
U.S. crude stocks are at their highest level in over 30 years and the contango market pricing structure continues to encourage increases in the stockpile. No one knows exactly how much storage space remains. The surplus is keeping U.S. crude prices low compared to international rivals but petroleum product prices (gasoline and diesel) are climbing higher, having bounced back from recent lows. Refining margins are sky high as bad weather and outages hamper operations. But as we describe today, the crude surplus remains a dark cloud on the horizon.
According to the Energy Information Administration the nation is officially awash with crude supplies – stocks are up by 62 MMBbl since January 1, 2015, to 444 million bbls at the end of February – highest ever (since EIA started the tally in 1982 – 33 years ago). About 10 million bls of crude was added to inventory between February 20, 2015, and February 27, 2015. The chart in Figure #1 at the link shows total U.S. crude stocks since July 2014 (blue line – flying towards the moon) as well as the 5-year average (red line) and the 5-year range (darker gray area).
The chart shows current levels 25% above the 5-year average and well outside the normal range for this time of year. About half of the inventory is located in the Gulf Coast region (220 MMBbl) and another 33 percent in the Midwest – the two principal refining regions. Depending on the amount of crude that U.S. refineries process (it varied seasonally between 15 and 16 million bopd last year) current crude stocks are enough to supply refineries for between 27 and 30 days – about a month. All of these “commercial” supplies are on top of the 690 MMBbl Federally mandated Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Wells coming off the confidential list will be updated later; I've been out all day and still getting caught up.

CLR's Hawkinson Wells Have Been Updated; Three Hawkinson Wells Cumulative Production Of 1.087 Million Bbls To Date

Updates

June 23, 2015: it should be noted that in addition to these eleven (11) Hawkinson wells on multi-well pads, there are two singletons. One was the first Hawkinson well; the most recent is a singleton still on confidential list.

Original Post

The CLR Hawkinson wells have been updated. There are eleven (11) Hawkinson wells on multi-well pads. Most of them had IPs in the typical CLR range of 400 to 900 bopd. Of interest:
  • 24455, 2,323, CLR, Hawkinson 13-22H, Oakdale, middle Bakken, 29 stages, 2.7 million bls ceramic, t10/13; cum 135K 1/20; 21 days in December; 15 days in January, 2015;
I thought the IP might be a typographical error, but that is what is reported on the sundry form. Of course, that could be a typo, also, but that would be unusual.

In addition to these eleven wells, there was an older Hawkinson well spud in 2010:
  • 18275, 1,020, CLR, Hawkinson 1-22H, Oakdale, t2/10; cum 722K 120; 31 days in both December (2014) and January (2015)
But that's not all. There are two more Hawkinson wells that were drilled from the other end of the spacing unit:
  • 20208, 960, CLR, Hawkinson 2-27H, Oakdale, 4-section spacing; t9/11; cum 472K 1/20;
  • 20211, 263, CLR, Hawkinson 3-27H, Oakdale, 4-section spacing, t9/11; cum 389K 1/20; went off line 10/19; back on line 1/20;
There are now fourteen (14) long laterals in that Hawkinson/Oakdale spacing unit.

A Note to the Granddaughters

Your grandmother is an incredible cook and chef. It's always great to have your aunt Laura come home. When Laura comes home, we always have fried chicken (awesome) and chocolate cake/chocolate frosting (awesome-er).

The best breakfast is Starbucks coffee and chocolate cake. Starbucks arrived late in my life; chocolate cake for breakfast began back in 1975, or thereabouts. It was another time, another place --a long time ago, in a galaxy far away.

I am still reading Franz Kafka's Amerika, about a chapter a day. As mentioned earlier, there was no particular reason to be reading it now, but every once in awhile I get back into a "kafka-phase" and I needed a small book to carry/read while standing in Christmas lines.

I always find it interesting how dots connect, how parallel lines cross (in a non-Euclidean universe), and it happened here, too. I was hoping to get the new Salinger biography for Christmas, and I did, and now I cannot put it down. It turns out that that Kafka "would become a critical writer to Salinger," p. 80. Who wudda guessed. So, during my mini-Kafka-phase I happen to read the biography of Salinger for whom Kafka played a major role in his literary life.

I thought I knew WWII fairly well, through biographies and histories, and novels such as Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse-Five, but the Salinger biography provides a deeper, more personal look at D-Day, the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, and the Battle of the Bulge. Salinger participated in all three, and was among the first to enter Kaufering Lager IV, and Buchenwald, two brutal concentration camps.

It was said that men who were in combat for 200 days in WWII went insane. Salinger checked himself into a civilian psychiatric hospital in Nuremburg while still on active duty (July, 1945), and was given an honorable discharge on November 22, 1945. He was sane enough to know that he did not want to have a mental health diagnosis as the reason for his military discharge.

It's an incredibly good biography. It's a different format than typical biographies which may dismay many folks, and it lacks an index.

Original Post

Yesterday, the NDIC reported twenty-three (23) new oil and gas permits. Nine of those were permits for WPX on one pad in Reunion Bay, the Alfred Old Dog wells.

The permits are sequential, inclusive, from #26145 through #26154, with the exception of #26150 which is a non-WPX permit.

A hand-drawn diagram helps me visualize how these wells will look.  These nine wells will be sited on one pad in the northeast quadrant of the northwest quadrant of section 30-150-93 (I just noticed an error on my diagram noting the township, but I may/may not fix it). Yesterday, the sites were not noted on the NDIC GIS map server but within the last couple of hours they have been placed on the map. My hand-drawn map is pretty close to what the NDIC has. I used data from the permit information as provided by the NDIC; it looks like on the GIS map server the wells will be sited pretty much on a line; if so, my map is a bit off. More importantly, I was correlating direction of the well with their siting and their legal designation (HC, HY, HZ, for example).

I assume they will target the middle Bakken and the upper Three Forks (remember the good old days, when there was just the "Three Forks." Now it's the "upper" three Forks, and the "lower" Three Forks.

They will all be long laterals.  Five will run north, and four will run south. Each well will sited about 50 feet from its neighbor which is typical, so far, of Bakken pad drilling.

Two other wells in the same spacing unit are instructive:
  • 19603, 332, WPX, Mandaree 30-31H, t5/11; middle Bakken, cum 572K 3/20; pump, 4/12;
  • 20035, PA/339, WPX, Maggie Old Dog 19-19HW, upper Three Forks; t4/12; cum 415 7/16; 22 stages; 3 million lbs; trip gas nearly 10,000 units; 5' to 20' flares; pump 4/13; sundry form received April 2, 2018, an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve fish from the well; remains off line 3/20;
Other errors may exist; but again, this is for me to help visualize how the Bakken is being developed. If anything looks wrong, it probably is; go to the source for accuracy.
