Think about that. There must be a gazillion college football programs, and this weekend, two NDSU quarterbacks, back-ups on major NFL teams, squared off against each other. Just for the fun of the game.

Price Gouging -- Uncle Ben's Rice -- Lundberg Rice -- Iberia Jasmine Rice -- August 25, 2024

Rice is a staple. I would assume the Democratic presidential candidate would be concerned about price gouging a staple. She has said that if elected president she would go after price gouging.

Speaking of gouging, is Uncle Ben's gouging on the price of rice? Is Lundberg gouging on the price of rice?

Uncle Ben's rice at 20 cents / ounce. At 20 cents / ounce, 3.3x that of Iberia (see below)

Lundberg rice at 23 cents / ounce. At 23 cents / ounce, almost 4x that of Iberia jasmine rice.

Iberia jasmine rice at 6 cents / ounce.  At six cents ounce, about one-fourth the cost of Lundberg rice.

Six Of The Ten Fastest Growing Cities Are In Texas; Five Of Them On I-35, San Antonio To Dallas -- August 25, 2024

Six of the ten fastest growing cities in the US last year (2023) were in Texas. All of them, except Conroe, Texas, were along the I-35 corridor from San Antonio in the south to Dallas in the north. Conroe, TX, is on the north side of Houston.

Kyle, TX: is the second-fastest growing city iin the US, on I-35, about midway between San Antonio and Austin. This is really quite incredible. Soon, perhaps very soon, the two cities will become one big metropolis. It's really quite fascinating. I saw it coming twenty years ago -- similar to the Boston - NYC - DC corridor? 

Politics: the entire stretch, at one time was solid red; now it's dark purple, and could easily be blue this next time around.

KYLE, Texas—People and businesses have flooded into Kyle, Texas, since the pandemic, making it the second-fastest-growing city in the U.S. The influx is creating wealth but also contributing to a big problem: Kyle is getting hotter and running low on water.

Housing developments pop up seemingly overnight on this patch of hills and prairie between Austin and San Antonio.  

Amazon.com recently opened a 308,000-square-foot sorting center in town.  

Tesla built a megafactory nearby. 

But climate change can make living here brutal. Underground, the aquifer that Kyle relied on is shrinking. The city for three years now has had to buy water rights from nearby San Marcos to satisfy its growing population. Temperatures hit nearly 100 degrees before this summer even started, and drought conditions persist. People wear neck fans, limit outdoor time to early morning and nighttime, and keep their children inside.

San Antonio is the first major city those coming from Mexico will see coming north. For Mexicans, San Antonio is the #1 US destination for Christmas shopping, at this longitude.
