Regularmaxxing -- Rambling -- January 24, 2026

Locator: 49825HAPPYHOUR.

There seems to be a Texas collective sense of impending dread -- you can blame the weathermen and women. For the past several days there has been an intense mantra that we are about to feel the wrath of Mother Nature from New Mexico to New York (as if the greatest storm in history stops at the New Mexico / Mexico border and anything north of New York doesn't really matter).

This is really, really weird. There is no activity whatsoever -- outside it's dead as a door nail, as we used to say in North Dakota. We're socked in with clouds and, actually, looking outside the window, it appears we are in a cloud. It looks like the typical North Dakota day I remember almost every day between January 2 and February 28.

The only folks going outside are those who have to "take their dog for a walk." A very short walk today, no doubt.

But holy mackerel. It's winter. I grew up in North Dakota where there were months (usually February) when it never got above zero degrees (that needs to be fact-checked but I doubt if I'm too far off). It's supposed to get cold and we're supposed to get snow in winter.

When did things change?

  • with Algore's Nobel Prize?
  • after 9-11?
  • with Obama? 2009 - 2017?
  • during the dot-com bubble? 1995 - 2002
  • with Trump-Fauci-Covid-19?

If I had to name one thing, it might be the death of "happy hour."

And that definitely occurred after Trump-Fauci-Covid-19.

So, I asked ChatGPT.

ChatGPT -- because it's not human -- missed one important aspect of "happy hour" that cannot be fixed with "regularmaxxing." I will come back to this later. What I'm thinking of may be true to some extent but I assume I will get push back on this idea so will hold back on it for now.

North Texas -- DFW Metroplex -- Last 24 Hours -- The Seven Stages Of Mother Nature

Locator: 49823WEATHER.

By the way, did any hurricanes hit US landfall in 2025? Whatever happened to global warming?

We now have a light dusting of snow in our apartment complex parking lot -- 7:39 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2026.

Earlier this week, a balmy 60+ degrees, dry, clear and calm.

Yesterday, a high of 53 in the early morning hours only to see temperature drop quickly through the rest of the day.

Sometime late afternoon it began to rain, fairly hard, and steady.

Early this morning, about 4:00 a.m. starting hearing -- very faintly -- ice pellets on windows, but not the sleet I'm used to.

Definite icy rain then.

But now, 7:39 a.m. there's a light dusting of snow.

So, now we have ice -- black ice -- on highways, interstates here in the metroplex area covered by slight dusting of snow. That is the worst possible combination one can have.

Local weather station calling it sleet.

This is the first batch of precipitation. Second batch later today.

At the moment, it looks like ice on power lines not going to be a major issue. ERCOT will do fine; only risk of power outages would be due to downed power lines due to ice on lines. That will occur but it will be spotty and likely to be a bit south and east of our immediate location.

National look: Fox News is reporting Arkansas and Missouri getting the most snow right now. If you like snow, head for Kentucky and Tennessee.

Look up "cognitive dissonance" in your Encylopedia Brittanica and you will likely see a photo of RFK, Jr.

Schwab's Meteor Is Rising -- January 24, 2026

Locator: 49822SCHWAB.

Disclaimer: I do not own any Schwab shares directly (I assume various ETFs / mutual funds / IRAs in which I invest have positions in Schwab). But Schwab has been my sole broker for years now. During the dot-com era I also had accounts with E*Trade and Ameritrade. A lot of water has flowed under those bridges.

For my granddaughters -- for their personal finance course set up by their dad -- I did a lot of research -- for me it came down to SoFi, Robinhood, and/or Schwab. All three are Stanford-university related.

Most important:

  • commission-free brokerage
  • deal with as few financial companies as possible;
  • ideal if brick-and-mortar opportunities exist where one can meet with representative face-to-face;
  • a really, really good GUI / website experience;
  • must have banking / check-writing app embedded at brokerage website.

Hydrogen In Iowa -- Janauary 24, 2026

Locator: 49821CONVOY.

AI prompt: There are reports that they're drilling / exploring for hydrogen in Iowa. How do geologists identify likely geologic structures that might have economically-viable hydrogen stores?

Google Gemini:

Biggest indicator, however (the USGS does it the old-fashioned way) -- surface observation:

  • Harold Hamm's jet was just seen on FlightRadar24 having landed in Ames, Iowa; and,
  • a convoy of flatbeds carrying oil rigs were seen on I-94 heading / headed east.

We got ourselves a convoy.

Updates

Later, 6:47 p.m. ET: what a mess -- when it comes to "resource mix" -- how in the world do "they" manage this? This is what "all of the above" looks like:

Later, 4:00 p.m. ET: more of the same -- link here --

Later, 12:00 a.m.  ET: I think I saw this years ago; then lost interest. But curious how Vermont's tree huggers would handle the cold: yup! Oil! LOL.

$300 in the middle of the night. 10x what it would cost if they would have stuck with natural gas from Pennsylvania.

All that natural gas in Pennsylvania and tree huggers in Vermont are using oil? Exactly what were they thinking?

No way to run a railroad, as they say.

From The Files

Apple will be the next victim: Intel was the first with regard to memory-price crunch. Didn't read the article. This is not an "apples-to-apples" comparison.

Goldman Sachs: CEO Solomon's pay raised 21% to $47 million.

Dividends: SLB and OKE raised their quarterly dividends. Whoo-hoo.

Scrooge: North Dakota failed to pass bill authorizing two school meals / day for all. Reprehensible.

Texas: wind power MIA during the worst winter storm in 40 years -- not counting the storm four years ago.

FBI: not getting the credit it deserves. Nor is Trump.

Winter: folks seem surprised it gets cold in the winter -- in the northern hemisphere.

Gold: trending toward $5,000. I remember when we thought $800 was expensive. Having said that, Barron's thinks silver and platinum could "outshine" gold.

Fraud: it's official. At least that's the report. Minnesota AG Keith Ellison met with Somali fraudsters under FBI Investigation to obtain campaign donations in exchange for "getting the money flowing" back to the Somali group. I'm sure there's more to the story. No one would be that crazy!

Next: Cuba. But it might have to wait until we sort out Iran.

KLM - Dutch airline: cancels weekend flights to Tel Aviv, Dubai, Saudi Arabia.

BlackRock: CIO likely to be next Fed Chair. Trump likes winners.

Apple-India: best year ever for iPhone in India.

US consumer sentiment: significant improvement as reported by Liz Ann Sonders yesterday.

Hegseth

  • strikes conciliatory tone on China;
  • will focus on Western Hemisphere and the Donroe Doctrine;
  • will cut US footprint in Europe, South Korea, and Middle East.

DOD pivots: no longer views China as top priority.

Elon Musk: picked the worst weekend of the year to initiate Tesla Robotaxi drives in Austin, Texas, with no safety monitor in the car. If that doesn't get your attention, nothing will.

Ka-ching, not Chiang Kai-shek: China has cleared Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance to begin preparing purchase requests for Nvidia's top chips.

Nvidia: will likely ship Vera Rubin earlier than expected -- sometime later this year.

HEB: trending on x in Texas.

Girl Scout cookies: $6 is best I can do; mostly $7. Skip the cookies; better just to donate $5 to the Girl Scouts every time you visit HEB.
