Easter

I just walked to the balcony to shut the door and saw the huge, beautiful, yellow moon. Today is the 24th; tomorrow is the 25th, a full moon. The equinox was last week!

Next Sunday: Easter.

March 24, 2024: I was going through my list of ticker symbols to look at tomorrow when the market opens. I guess I can scratch DIS off the list.

An Evening With Dan Buettner -- A Shout-Out To Our Broker -- March 24, 2024

The other night we had a wine tasting with Dan Buettner via Zoom. Awesome. Maybe more on this later.

Signed copy.

Dan recommends Connonau red wine from Sardinia.

I assume Connanau red wine is the table wine in southeastern Sardinia probably priced at an American dollar or so; here at Total Wine and More? $18.99.

USAF Memories

Many months I've spent in Decimomannu NATO Air Base, Sardinia, on temporary deployment supporting F-15s out of Bitburg, Germany.

I was stationed at Bitburg Air Base, Germany, from 1983 to 1986 and 1989 - 1992.

At Bitburg, home of the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing, there were three squadrons: the 22nd (my squadron); the 52nd (the NATO Tiger squadron); and the 525th (the Bulldog squadron).

While assigned to Bitburg AB, we experienced the following F-15 losses:

  • 1 June 1983: F-15C, 79-0071, of the 53rd TFS, 36th TFW, USAF, collided with F-15C 80-0008 and crashed near Kusel, West Germany. Pilot ejected and survived. We arrived in Bitburg in late June, 1983.
  • 1 June 1983: F-15C, 80-0008, of the 53rd TFS, 36th TFW, USAF, collided with F-15C 79-0071 and crashed near Kusel, West Germany. Pilot was killed.[
  • 10 April 1984: F-15C, 79-0044, of the 525th TFS, 36th TFW, USAF, crashed near Lommersdorf, West Germany.[7] Pilot ejected and survived.
  • 7 January 1986: F-15C, 79-0061, of the 525th TFS, 36th TFW, USAF, crashed after colliding with F-15C 80-0032 near Rimschweiler, West Germany. Pilot ejected and survived.
  • 7 January 1986: F-15C, 80-0032, of the 525th TFS, 36th TFW, USAF, crashed after colliding with F-15C 79-0061 near Rimschweiler, West Germany. Pilot was killed.
  • 24 October 1990: F-15C, 79-0067, of the 525th TFS, crashed into the Mediterranean Sea off Decimomannu Air Base, Sardinia, Italy. Pilot ejected and survived.

This was the commander's aircraft for the 22nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (my squadron, as noted above). Photo take in 1991 during my second Bitburg tour.

Reading The Production Statement

Wow, wow, wow -- a reader whom we will call Tucker just noted a new well on his / her monthly production statement. Tucker has never paid much attention with his / her production statements but with a brand new well, Tucker thought it was a great time to see if I could help him / her with reading / making out the production statement. So, this weekend, I will post some YouTube videos explaining oil production statements.

This should be fun.

Okay, I've started taping the videos.

These videos are very amateurish.

I may have a lot of this wrong, and all of this information can be found on the web posted by much more knowledgeable folks and much more professionally. I often use terms incorrectly, and I often round numbers, so take all of this with a grain of salt. I'm simply trying to explain to a reader how to read his/her production statement.

I'm hoping to provide enough information -- right, wrong, whatever -- to get the reader started.

Feel free to fact-check and re-run the numbers.

Again, this is for one reader; it is not for the general audience. If in any way you think this might affect your own minerals, go to other sources for better and more accurate information.

I think Clip 1 is the worse; I may re-do it.

Clip 2 is of the well itself -- where it's located, etc.

Clip 3 is probably the one the reader is most interested in -- how to calculate the decimal unit and how the decimal unit is useful.

So, here goes.

Clip 1:

Clip 2: There is an error in the spreadsheet that I produced for this video but that error has been corrected in the post and in clip 3 below. It does not matter with regard to what I was posting in Clip 2.

Clip 3: Note only major error in this clip. I stated that the 2560 acre drilling unit was two sections, one mile by two miles. In fact, a 2560-acre drilling unit is four sections, two miles by two miles or one mile by four miles -- both methods giving one four square miles of surface area and four square miles in the drilling unit.

It's All Relative -- The US Economy -- March 24, 2024

Locator: 46842ECON.

By the way, if you really want to read how badly the UK is doing, read the two-page essay in the latest issue of The New York Review of Books.  The lede:

When we returned to London in 2015, after twelve years in the US, we could not get our son into the local elementary school.
His class in Hackney, the neighborhood where we live, had the maximum of thirty kids in it, and none were leaving. Pretty much all the nonreligious schools in the area were at full capacity, too. He ended up getting a spot at a school two miles away.
When our daughter started kindergarten a couple of years later, her class was also capped at thirty, and full. Today her class has just fifteen kids in it. Next year the school—located, apparently without irony, on the borough’s first “21st Century Street,” with dedicated green space, bicycle parking, electric vehicle charging, and 40 percent “tree canopy cover”—will close. (It is merging with another undersubscribed school across the main road.) So will more than ninety across the country.
Low birth rates and Brexit-induced emigration have forced these changes.
On average, elementary school classes in England are at 88 percent capacity, but in some areas, including my fashionable but still quite poor quarter, the rate is far lower. Not only are the schools shrinking and shutting down—the kids who go to them are getting smaller. After more than a decade of austerity, British five-year-olds are a full centimeter shorter now than they were in 2010, and they are becoming significantly shorter than children in other countries.
I can’t help recalling what Kristian Jensen, the Danish finance minister, said in 2017, not long after the United Kingdom voted to leave the EU: “There are two kinds of European nations. There are small nations and there are countries that have not yet realized they are small nations.”

But this is the zinger:

Britain’s decline is relative, of course (its economy remains the sixth largest in the world), but it is real (it was fifth until the end of 2021, when India, its erstwhile colony, overtook it). Decades ago this diminishment was understood to be gradual and generational. After the Suez Crisis in 1956, there was an attempt to retreat to this smaller position in an orderly manner.
I’m fifty-five, and my generation’s parents grew up in a virtually monoracial country, reliant on heavy industry, with the globe colored pink to mark British territories. I was raised to learn the metric system, the names of new countries—Zimbabwe, Benin, Burkina Faso—in a nation that saw itself as the stable conduit between Europe and America, with postcolonial ties across the globe.
My children’s cohort has adjusted to an economy in which Indian restaurants employ more people than steel, coal, and shipbuilding all put together, and membership in the EU is a fact of history

I remember our four years in Boston, meeting many, many foreign students studying at Harvard or MIT, and dreading having to go back to their home countries. Perhaps one exception: the family we met from Finland.
