Whatever Happened To Intel's Plans To Take On / Overtake Nvidia (August 24) -- Update -- August 24, 2025

    • Limited shelf life: The Gaudi line of accelerators is reportedly being phased out in favor of Intel's next-generation GPU, codenamed Falcon Shores.
    • Cancelled flagship product: In February 2025, Intel cancelled its commercial plans for the Falcon Shores product. The technology will now be used as an internal test chip as Intel shifts its focus to developing broader, rack-level AI solutions centered around its Jaguar Shores project. This decision marks a scaling back of Intel's ambitions to become a major supplier of discrete AI accelerator chips.

Close reading of information provided by Google AI suggests the "fab" relationship between TSMC and Intel is getting much, much closer. 

Right now, the TSMC fabs in Phoenix are only able to meet 7% of US demand for its chips. Think about that: only 7% of US demand. Wow. 

Intel has two divisions:

Following recent corporate restructuring, Intel has indeed separated its business into two primary divisions: Intel Products (design) and Intel Foundry (fabrication). This change is a significant shift from the company's traditional integrated device manufacturer (IDM) model, where it both designed and manufactured its own chips internally.

Some suggest Trump could stipulate that relationship be strengthened if TSMC wants to avoid harsher tariff demands; my hunch: TSMC is already moving in this direction.
