Warren To Step Down -- Berkshire Hathaway; Annual Meeting -- BRK -- 1Q25 -- May 3, 2025

Locator: 48576WB.

Disclaimer: this is not an investment site. BRK is one of my bigger holdings. I added to this position in 1Q25 as the market started to implode.

Monday: a buying opportunity. A huge buying opportunity. Count me out.

Wow, he had a great life.

BRK, 1Q25: Warren stepping down!

Immediate thoughts upon reading two articles (CNBC, and The Wall Street Journal) regarding Buffett's comments at for 1Q25:

  • financial results 1Q25 had absolutely nothing to do with trade, except "emotion, fear, anxiety, misreading the tea leaves, traders, not investors."
    • misses; and
    • results were much worse than expected
    • primary business a disaster
    • underlying wholly-owned subsidiaries treading water
  • incredibly bad 1Q25 report, particularly in his favorite sector
    • insurance particularly bad
      • political rhetoric should have had not effect on domestic business
      • continues to under-perform; cracks in Geico were beginning to appear last year (2024)
  • cash worked well to distract his ardent followers.
  • on trade:
    • Warren Buffett: global trade wars are bad;
    • Trump: that is true, and there would be no global trade wars if no country placed tariffs on imports / exports

Brief Reminder

 Briefly:

  • I am inappropriately exuberant about the Bakken and I am often well out front of my headlights. I am often appropriately accused of hyperbole when it comes to the Bakken.
  • I am inappropriately exuberant about the US economy and the US market.
  • I am also inappropriately exuberant about all things Apple.

  • And now, Nvidia, also. I am also inappropriately exuberant about all things Nvidia. Nvidia is a metonym for AI and/or the sixth industrial revolution.
  • I've now added Broadcom to the disclaimer. I am also inappropriately exuberant about all things Broadcom.
  • I've now added Oracle to the disclaimer. I am also inappropriately exuberant about all things Oracle.

TILT -- Solar Panels -- May 3, 2025

Locator: 48575SPAIN.

Something the Spaniards learned last week:

Most folks thought, like I did, that after dark, solar cells would be useless, but it turns out that even if the "grid" fails during the day, so will "your" solar sells.

The Irony Of The Biden Campaign -- May 3, 2025

Locator: 48574BIDEN.

I've yet to see an op-ed with this as a theme.

Trump is doing everything he promised during the campaign. Everything. No surprises.

At least 50% of America, including much of his base, all of Canada, most of Europe, etc, are really, really angry with Trump.

The irony is that Biden would still be president if Biden had simply secured the southern border.

Had Biden, et al, simply secured the southern border, just think:

  • no tariffs;
  • no recession;
  • no RFK, Jr.;
  • no Hegseth;
  • no fights with elite universities that make our country great;
  • no mass firings of federal employees; and, of course,
  • no "Maryland man."

All Biden had to have done: secure the southern border. Which turned out to be fairly easy.

Of course, then, we never would have gotten to know Tim Walz.

Kamala would be measuring drapes for the White House.

Warren Buffett; Berkshire Hathaway; Annual Meeting -- Warren To Step Down -- BRK -- 1Q25 -- May 3, 2025

Kentucky Derby today. I may miss it. No bigger. I've lost interest in the Derby but if I watch it, I'll post it for the archives.

This may be my only blog today. Lots of family activities. If there is more blogging it will be later today. I'm particularly interested in Nikola Jokić. I can hardly wait for tonight's game #7, LA Clippers (5) vs Denver Nuggets (4); series tied at 3 - 3. Winner will advance to take on OKC (1).
