The Book Page

9:55 p.m. CST. Friday night. I'm reading the current issue of The New York Review of Books, December 19, 2024, and listening to 60's and 70's folk music on YouTube. Memories.

Never quit reading.

"You Only Live Twice," Alexander Leggatt, an essay on two books, both from the Yale University Press, Second Chances: Shakespeare and Freud, Stephen Greenblatt and Adam Phillips, 218 pp; and, Shakespeare in Bloomsbury, Marjorie Garber, 2023, 392 pp.

I would have no interest in reading the first book, the one by Leggatt, but the second one is intriguing. Bloomsbury is a metonym for Virginia Woolf and her crowd. I've gone through "my Shakespeare phase" multiple times, and, likewise, "my Virginia Woolf phase," several times. At one time I had extensive libraries of both but have since culled the shelves and only a dozen or so of each (Shakespeare / Woolf) have survived. I'm tempted to order the book, hardcover, list price $35, but 36% off at Amazon, $22.50, and free shipping. At $22, practically being given away. But it appears to cover what I've covered before -- except for the last section on Shakespeare and the theater.

It turns out Ms Woolf preferred Shakespeare read to Shakespeare acted, and I agree. I find Shakespearean stage plays -- the tragedies -- boring and slow and unnatural. When one reads Shakespeare, Woolf says the reader has "special privileges. He can pause; he can ponder; he can compare .. He can read what is directly on the page, or, drawing aside, can read what is not written." She wrote in her diary: "Shall I read King Lear? Do I want such a strain on the emotions: I think I do." One senses that for her the private experience of reading King Lear was more emotionally demanding than seeing it on the stage. And private reading can produce a deep response whose effect an outsider can only guess at.

Speaking of "a deep response whose effect an outsider can only guess at" takes me to an essay in the same issue, "Lebanon's Year of Living Ambiguously," Charles Glass. After reading the essay, I wrote at the top, "probably one of the saddest essays I've ever read."

Who is Charles Glass? A former Chief middle East Correspondent for ABC News and the author of They Fought Alone: The True Story of the Starr Brothers, British Secret Agents in Nazi-Occupied France (sounds intriguing, interesting) and Soldiers Don't Go Mad: A Story of Brotherhood, Poetry, and Mental Illness During the First World War. Much could be said. Reminds me of one of my most cherished books: The Great War and Modern Memory, Paul Fussell, c. 1975.

For the archives. Nothing to do with the Bakken.

The Sixth Industrial Revolution And The Investing Challenge -- December 13, 2024

Locator: 48393INVESTING.

Investing in AI: why it's going to be so incredibly difficult for investors with a 30-year horizon to invest in AI.

AI is the sixth industrial revolution, but unlike the second and third industrial revolutions in which there were a handful of winners (identified early), there will be a huge number of players in the sixth industrial revolution -- trying to find winners will be like finding needles in a haystack.

The commodity of interest in AI is not lithium, or silicon, or copper, but rather human brain power.

Think:

  • Silicon Valley (California)
  • Utah
  • central and north-central Texas
  • Nashville
  • south India

Speaking of India

Link here.

Apple will begin assembling its AirPods wireless earbuds in India for the very first time, starting early next year.
Foxconn is scheduled to begin making the AirPods at a factory located near Hyderabad in Telangana state, beginning around Q1 2025. Hyderabad is near the geographic center of India.
The factory is already making AirPods on a trial basis, and manufacturing will ramp up quickly after production begins.
This will make AirPods just the second major Apple product to be assembled in India. Some models of the iPhone are also assembled in the country. Apple had first begun talking to Foxconn about assembling AirPods in India back in 2023. Foxconn executives were at first reluctant to assemble AirPods, due to the relatively low profit margins. However, the company decided to go ahead with the plan to “reinforce engagement” with Apple.

BRK-B: has declined in value every day since November 29, 2024 with one or two exceptions. The Dow has been in steep decline since December 4, 2024, one of the longest such stretches in quite some time.

China: officially switching from oil to coal. Link here. COP29 -- the day the music died.

Wind / solar too expensive, not dispatchable; can't come close to meeting needs for EVs; nuclear, too far into the future to make a difference. Trade imbalance forces China to limit oil imports. The only option left to power all those EVs? Coal.

The Sixth Industrial Revolution -- December 13, 2024

Re-posting.

The Sixth Industrial Revolution

See wiki, as currently understood and generally accepted:

  • first industrial revolution: 1760 - 1840; ended in the middle of the 19th century; inventions; advancements in textiles; age of inventions;
  • second industrial revolution: advancements in manufacturing processes; 1870 - 1914 (beginning of WWI); age of mass manufacturing;
  • third industrial revolution: beginning in 1947, information age; computer coming out of WWII; Colossus, Bletchley Park;
  • fourth industrial revolution: rapid technological advancement beginning in the late 1990s; the Age of Apple (or the personal computer).

Much better:

  • first industrial revolution: ended in the middle of the 19th century; age of invention;
  • second industrial revolution: 1870 - 1914 (beginning of WWI); age of Henry Ford, mass manufacturing;
  • third industrial revolution: peri-WWI -- the age of conventional manufacturing and logistics; rise of synthetics and the oil and gas industry; age of Standard Oil (or the age of John D Rockefeller);
  • fourth industrial revolution: beginning in 1947, information age; the computer age (or the age of Turing);
  • fifth industrial revolution: rapid technological advancement beginning in the late 1990s -- maybe it began in 1984 with the (in)famous Apple commercial; age of Apple (or the age of Steve Jobs)

The question is whether "we" have entered the sixth industrial revolution: Nvidia blades; LDCs; a return to nuclear energy to meet energy needs of the information age. If so:

  •  sixth industrial revolution: artificial intelligence enters its stride; the "Nvidia revolution."

It's hard for me to accept that the need for nuclear energy to meet the needs of LDCs does not signify a new industrial revolution.

Original Post

One of the reasons I quit taking comments was due to the high number of comments from folks who just did not "get it." At some point, it became tedious for me to wade through all those comments. I decided that it was not worth my time; my time could be better spent doing other things than wading through inane comments, generally from folks who stumbled upon my site accidentally, no doubt, and some who would never understand the Bakken. Some folks, like Debbie Downer, will never get it.

A recurring theme on "themilliondollarway" is that there are "no" dry holes in the Bakken. (A lot of folks did not understand the reason for the quotes around "no.")

A few weeks ago someone called me on that: she noticed there actually was a dry hole in the Bakken. She chided me for continually blogging there were no dry holes in the Bakken when, in fact, there are.

I checked the well file: it was permit/file #20066. This is what I wrote :
  • 20066, DRY, XTO, Nelson State 24X-33, Indian Hill, Bakken; go the link; this well was plagued from the beginning;
During drilling, it was hit by the worse blizzard in decades; I have a lot of respect for the roughnecks and the truckers who worked through horrendous weather trying to save this well, and I have even more respect for XTO who finally said it was not worth it (I'm sure the roughnecks had wished that decision came sooner, but knowing roughnecks, some of them probably wanted to prove they could do it); they shut down the well, and said they would come back.
And they did come back. And they came back with a vengeance. A great well. My hat is off to all folks. Good job.
  • 20971, 1,087, XTO, Nelsen State 24X-33R , Indian Hill, Bakken, 24 stages; 2.8 sand, [update: unfortunately this well is not playing out so well; being choked back? only 2,000 bbls/month in its fourth month; t9/11; cum 167K 1/17; cum 229K 10/24;
There are "no" dry holes in the Bakken (I'm not saying they are not all great wells; some may not even be financially viable, but ...)

Again, this is not an investment site. See the disclaimer at the top of the sidebar at the right. Make no decisions based on what you read at this blog. If something looks wrong, it probably is. Check fact with the ultra-reliable wiki site.

On another note: Indian Hill is in the Bull's Eye of the Bakken, and this is where the Bakken activity is headed this summer.

Indian Hill is the name of an oil field in the Bakken. It is also a geographical location: a large, "sprawling" butte south of the river, from where you have a great view of Williston. As noted earlier, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, Cudd, Hexom, Cal-Frac, Stateline, and 55 of their closest friends are phenomenally well-positioned for this activity, just five or six miles south.

It will be interesting if there is talk of a new, widened bridge across the wide Missouri south of the four-mile corner. [Update, October 3, 2014: a new four-lane bridge across the Missouri is planned in the 2015 - 2016 time frame.]

Later, 7:19 p.m. CT: The file report shows this Three Forks well was fracked / stimulated 9/22/2017; 61 stages with 14.54 million lbs of proppant.

Original Post

We last checked in on this well back in 2017. It was drilled six years earlier, in 2011, and I was never able to determine if it had been fracked.

At best, as of 2017, it was a mediocre well, reporting cumulative production of around 100,000 bbls. But, wow, holy mackerel, checking tonight, this well has reported more than one million bbls crude oil cumulative. Full production here.

The well:
