Random Update -- Atmospheric CO2 -- November 16, 2025

I quit following atmospheric CO2 some years ago, but every so often I check back in to see what's going on.

This is the site I always use: Earth CO2. 

The site seems to be a bit sketchier than usual. At the top, this banner:

Why they leave up "February CO2" is beyond me but that hasn't changed ... well, since February, 2024. 

December Temperature? What's that all about? Obviously that's December, 2024 -- almost a year ago. This is the reason they go back to 1880 - 1920:

Considering all the coal that China is burning, I just can't get too excited about these numbers. In fact, if we're talking only 1.55°C since 1900, an increase of 1.55°C over 125 years isn't all that remarkable. Also, it appears that the number for February, 2025, was 427.09 compared with a most recent reading of 428.29 for November, 2025. I doubt that is statistically significant nor repeatable (if they were to test again). 

All in all, this is really a pretty amateurish website considering the billions of dollars the sponsors are demanding from western nations

I quit tracking atmospheric CO2 a long, long time ago.

I was curious. I checked in today.

Wow, they used to post updated numbers one month after the measurements -- gave them time to "massage" the numbers.

I see now they're taking a whole year to "massage" the numbers before releasing them:

And in some cases, like August, 2024, they don't even have the data:

In fact, the story was first posted by yale.edu, October 25, 2016: it looks like "Ducks Unlimited" is a big culprit than the oil companies. LOL.

The amount of methane in the atmosphere has more than doubled in the past 250 years. It has been responsible for about a fifth of global warming. But it has a confusing recent history. The steady rise of emissions stopped in the 1990s. Emissions were stable for almost a decade until 2007, but then abruptly resumed their rise.

[The Bakken boom in North Dakota began, coincidentally (?) in 2007; in Montana in 2000.]

What has been going on? Fracking of natural gas in the U.S. and elsewhere has frequently been blamed for the resumed rise in emissions. But new studies are raising serious questions about that.

Researchers are now saying say that, globally at least, the increase in recent years is due to the activities of microbes in wetlands, rice paddies, and the guts of ruminants.

“Despite the large increase in natural gas production, there has not been an upward trend in industrial emissions,” says Stefan Schwietzke, of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder, Colorado, who is the lead author of one of the new studies.

Despite all those Canadian fires and the huge fire in Maui, atmospheric CO2 rose at no great rate than predicted.

Atmospheric CO2 -- November, 2022, Data

With all the volcanoes around the world right now that are active, and some erupting, including two actually near the Mauna Loa Observatory, at least one reader is wondering why the most recent atmospheric CO2 number is not a whole lot higher. 

The increase y/y is about what we've seen for the past several years. It's almost as if the volcanoes are having no effect on atmospheric CO2.

A reader noted:

The volcano is currently active and the lava flow may close a major road. The published current CO2 level is 417.31.

Volcano eruptions and venting release most of the atmospheric CO2.

The level was taken at 3:53 AM local time this morning. May be time to calibrate the sensor????? I would expect a huge rise in the local measurements of CO2.

The November, 2022, data will be updated on/about December 10, 2022. Last year:

I agree with the reader. A reading of 417 at the time and site of a volcano erupting when the previous number was 415 is certainly suspect.

On another note, it looks like North Dakota will have bumper crops: wheat and corn. Ukraine? Perhaps not so much.

You can fact-check me on this but in all the years I have posted monthly atmospheric CO2 data I've never had two consecutive months with no increase in atmospheric CO2. 

Atmospheric CO2 is seasonal and so one cannot compare consecutive months, but it is very rare to see this.
