    NOG will issue an updated reserve report with Q2 results.  With 40% of net wells having come online in 2012, expect NPV-10 to balloon.
    NOG participates in ~25% of North Dakota Bakken wells, with average interests of almost 10%.
    Hedged:  75% for balance of 2012 with a floors near $91;  hedged 50% for 2013 with floors near $90.

        1. Anschutz is (was) privately held so not easy to find acreage. Then Anschutz assets sold its ND Bakken assets to OXY late last year (2010):

          So, with that, I will add OXY to the list above.

        2. Godwin Energy Resources, LLC Based in Frisco TX is looking to acquire large acreage in the Bakken/Three Forks.

        3. Bruce is the large AFB at Minot a development area? Perhaps the bases "prospective production areas " could be developed as deficit reduction packages. Very Public way to counterprogram the malfeasance eminating from its numerous other tentacles. A Bold ND Senator or a newly selected representative, might do well to make this case.

        4. Minot, North Dakota, is well east of the Bakken activity. There won't be any significant oil development in the Minot area during my investing lifetime, nor my children's investing lifetime.

          That's been a huge problem. Professionals (geologists), CEOs, high income folks don't like living in remote Williston but that's where the center of activity is. They would prefer to live in Minot (rather than Williston) but Minot is too far away from the activity.

          More worrisome, for Williston, as the D-J basin (Niobrara) is developed, Denver may start to pull Williston entrepreneurs away.

          Except for headquarter / operations centers, etc., I don't see Minot as a center for the Bakken. Even CLR is moving its headquarters farther south (smile), from Enid, Oklahoma, to Oklahoma City.

        5. Is there be any interest in Ward County, specifically the town of Sawyer?

        6. Sawyer is even farther east than Minot. I am not aware of any activity this far east, but I could have missed something.

          There are some old dry wells in the general area from past booms, but no permits now that I can see on the GIS map server.

        7. Have you heard of any potential drilling activity in sheridan County MT in the Plentywood-Reserve area? If so, what type of results should they expect? Is the formation shallower in this area than in Richland and Roosevelt Counties?

        8. I don't follow the Bakken closely enough outside North Dakota, so, unfortunately, I can't provide any information.

          The folks on the Bakken Shale Discussion Group might know more.

          GMXR says they have some acreage in Sheridan County (you can search this site/other sites for GMXR). I would assume in time we will see BEXP and CLR in Sheridan County (they may be there already) but according to most recent CLR presentation, they don't have significant presence in Sheridan County. A critical SW to NE fault line seems to cut just to the southeast of Sheridan County.

        9. Hi there Bruce,

          I'm wondering if you have any knowledge on Samson oil and Gas holdings in the McKenzie County and the Montana Bakken. Terry Barr has stated for some time now he wants to expand into these areas.


        10. I don't know. I try to keep this page up-to-date and accurate.

          Samson Oil and Gas seems to put out more press releases than any other company in the Bakken, updating us on progress of their one or two wells that are being drilled at any one time in Stockyard Creek, so I would assume if they had acquired more acreage, they would have posted a press release.

          And I haven't seen any.

        11. privately held Slawson Exploration is seeking industry partners for a variety of drilling and leasing opportunities.

        12. Has anyone heard of America's Natural Energy getting into the Bakken. Large ad in the Williston Plains Reporter Newspaper. Stating up to 25% royalties depending on the location.

        13. Bruce-

          Is there a source out there that states total acres contained within the Bakken play? How many acres have been leased or how many acres are left to be leased?

          1. I'll let someone else try to answer that one, but even if you could find it, it wouldn't mean much. There appear to be a lot of acres in the Bakken that won't amount to much (eastern Parshall oil field; Ward County; etc).

            Federal land and state land should be available (if the Bakken Pool area is accurately defined) but I can't even imagine the difficulty of going to all the county courthouses to look up who owns the mineral rights, and then from there find out if the acreage is leased. In some cases, the mineral rights owner might not even be willing to share that information.

          2. It wouldn't mean much not knowing where the acreage is located. If I'm not mistaken oil and gas leases are public information and on record at with the county just like the mineral owner or surface owner. From what I can tell there are about 8.5 million acres in what I would call the North Dakota Bakken/TF play. This does include Ward County and goes as far south as I-94 and west to the MT/ND border and north to the Canadian border. I'm just curious if there is any acreage left to be leased. But it's probably an impossible question to ask.

          3. If you ask that question over at the Bakken Shale Discussion Group, you might be surprised at the answers you get.

            Just this morning, someone on that thread, noted that his/her inherited minerals were still not leased!

            This information is public but there is no database for private holdings, by far the largest percentage. One would have to go to the county courthouses and go through thousands of pages of titles. I don't think any single human being could do it.

            And when you go home after the first night of collecting that data, you would have to start over the very next day, as leases expire.

            On top of that, anything leased is still available if one is willing to "top-lease." Technically, 100% of the Bakken is available for leasing if the lease-holder wants to "top lease" and the price is right.

          4. Is there any information out there about Ward County? Interestingly enough there is a well coming off the confidential list on the 12th drilled SE of Berthold in Ward County. Not sure if it's a Bakken well.

          5. There are two wells on the confidential list in Ward County:
            21145, SE of Berthold as you noted, conf, Vecta Oil and Gas, Neshem 26-1
            22205, NE of Minot, rig on site, Ballard Petroleum, Haskins 11-27.

            I doubt either of them are Bakken wells.

            The Neshem well is on the edge of the Lone Tree oil field, and will be located just north of another Neshem well which is still producing:

            4639, 228, Arsenal Energy, Neshem 5, Madison pool, s3/69; t4/69; cum 444K bbls.

            For those who do not know my shorthand: this is the Neshem 5 well, permit #4639, with an IP of 228 bbls. It is currently operated by Arsenal Energy; it is not a Bakken pool, but a Madison well; it was spudded the year I graduated from high school (1969); and produced oil until 2005, 36 years later. It produced a cumulative of 444,193 barrels.

            By today's standard, this well was probably very inexpensive to put in, and might have made someone a bit of money -- almost half a million bbls of oil. Now you can see why the "average EUR" for a Bakken at 603,000 is not out of the question.

        14. Hello Bruce,

          I read your blog just about everyday. I also reference it a lot for my job as a source of information regarding the Bakken market. Right now I have been tasked to put together an accurate summary of the larger players' rigs and acreage. I know you are very busy updating a lot of different things but I was wondering how up to date this page is? I was also wondering if there have been any recent operator reports that might cover these areas of interest for the market either with graphs or just simple notes? Any help you can provide would be great. Thanks for all the work you have done with this blog.


          1. This particular page I try to keep current; most recent updates come from 2Q12 earnings calls (which is linked at the sidebar at the right).


            The rig count is changing quickly daily, so those numbers are not yet updated. Yesterday the rig count was 197; this a.m. it was 193; and now I see it is down to 191. The numbers are dropping fast. For rigs, I would use this database:


            Graphs are easy. Each operator provides corporate updates; just go to their websites. A few non-listed/private operators do not provide those updates. I am unaware, for example, of any corporate updates by Slawson.

            As noted: I cannot vouch for the accuracy of any of my notes: I try to ensure their accuracy at the time of posting. I always recommend folks cross-check anything I post on my blog if that data is important to them.

          2. I just posted the breakdown of the 191 active rigs in North Dakota today (August 22, 2012).

            The number will change daily as some rigs are being moved between jobs. I also posted a link so one can easily compare this most recent break down with a breakdown last year.

            My hunch is that posted acreage is fairly accurate; that doesn't change a whole lot. I expect to see some significant changes within the next year.
