Equity Valuations -- Commentary -- June 2, 2024

Link here.

From the linked article:

Six months ago, an average Joe may have been willing to pay $5 for a dollar of the S&P 500’s future profits.

Today, he’s ready to pay way more.

This is essentially what’s happened in the stock market. As of last week, investors are paying 20.57 times for each share of the S&P 500’s projected profits over the next year, marking a 3.4 point gain on the index’s valuation from its October market low.

Such a surge in the S&P 500’s price-to-earnings multiple over a short span is rare; it’s happened only 5% of the time in the past three decades, David Rosenberg, a renowned strategist, wrote in a note.

Why? It goes back to my favorite chart. LOL.

One answer for the high valuations: Liquidity.
By many measures, there’s money to invest in the market, helping drive up valuations.
Money-market fund balances are the most commonly cited trove of cash; assets held totaled $6 trillion for the first time in February—and the latest value for week ended May 29 remains above this record.
The rationale is that this sidelined money, usually invested in short-term debt such as Treasury bills, can be deployed to purchase equities anytime, creating a feedback loop.
Other liquidity indicators are also pointing to a healthy level of money in the system: The overnight reverse repurchase facility—a place where institutions park excess cash to earn interest from the Federal Reserve—is at $440 billion. The M2 money supply, a gauge of money in the economy, currently hovers at $21 trillion.

YOLO, FOMO, MOJO.

Locator: 48037B.

Going back to the wells that came off confidential list in 1Q19, I got through the first fifteen wells. Here are the best performing wells of that group, all having gone over 500K bbls crude oil cumulative.

  • 500,000 bbls x $65 / bbl = $32,500,000 ($32.5 million) at the wellhead per well. After five years. And most of these wells will continue to produce 30years.

LOL. "Little changed."

These numbers are incredible, considering the 600-point jump in the Dow two days ago.

Of course, these numbers mean nothing tonight with regard to what might happen tomorrow, but I would rather see all this green than red. LOL.

Never Quit Reading -- Spam, Hormel, Maui Fires, Las Vegas, And The California Hotel; Powell's Books In Portland -- June 2, 2024

I subscribe to a number of magazines.

Whatever.

As longterm readers know, I love Spam and am fascinated with the story. I seldom eat bacon -- way too expensive and so incredibly greasy with all the splattering stovetop -- but I love Spam and go through phases when I eat it regularly: a very, very thin slice smothered in maple syrup with homemade waffles. I assume breakfast costs me 25 cents, if that much, not including the fifty- to seventyfive-cent K-cups.

Yes, I had Spam for breakfast this morning.

So, I about fell off my chair when I came across this article in the most recent issue of The New Yorker

In the big scheme of things, it's the story of how Spam saved the struggling California Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas, a few miles north of the Strip, back in 1975. LOL.

Great two-page article.

My wife and I were married in Las Vegas. I've spent more than a few weekends there over a 73-year-lifetime. It's a fascinating city -- at least it was a fascinating city. I haven't been there in a long time and will probably never go again. Been there, done that, and I don't gamble.

Speaking of Las Vegas: my wife and I saw Liberace in Las Vegas, decades ago. I had seen his show earlier and when I returned later with May, I convinced her to go. I doubt -- except for perhaps Cher -- there is / was never a better show that represented "old" Hollywood, "the old" Las Vegas.

Apple: web eraser? France, others not happy.

Apple: the new iPad Pro a review, over at Bloomberg

Nvidia: Rubin. To launch 2026; to be followed by Rubin Ultra.

AMD: link to The Verge -- if I'm reading this correctly, "simply CPUs." Not a competitor to Nvidia's GPUs. Link here.

Motley Fool: Nvidia.

Tech is tracked here.

I check this at least monthly, often weekly, transistor count: wiki.

  • CPUs
  • GPUs
  • FPGAs
This is pretty cool

Blackwell and Rubin were mentioned.

Now, over at "tech chips," posted earlier:

So, there's the wiki entry for Nvidia's "Blackwell" GPU.

So, we now watch for wiki to add "Rubin" to the GPU list.

Meanwhile, we need a better clarification / explanation from Tim Cook regarding Apple's GPUs -- right now "sophisticated Apple aficionados" know but the vast majority of folks do not. Enough said, for now, It will be fascinating to watch.

In addition, we need to see more on NPUs -- neural processing units.

Apple's M4 has all on three on the same chip: CPUs, GPUs, and NPUs. From April 24, 2024.

Apple's M4 schematic, from an article one month ago.

But we're starting to compare apples with oranges.

In the big scheme of things, I think of Nvidia : data centers :: Apple M4 : laptops/Vision Pro.

AAPL has been a laggard this past year despite the fact that M4 was announced, launched, and made available faster than most expected. If one starts to see AAPL surge over the next two months, it will suggest to me that analysts are starting to understand better the M4.

Tim Cook mentioned Apple Silicon about a year or so ago (I've long forgotten exactly when) and recently introduced the M4, but it was my impression at the time, analysts completely the significance of the M4, much like I did, focusing on the "chip count" and nm-size and not the clever idea of putting all three on one chip.

There's been a lot of talk lately whether Nvidia will overtake Apple as the bigger company by market cap -- the race for three-trillion-dollar market cap.

That's fine, but to some that suggests Apple and Nvidia are direct competitors. They are not. Two completely different types of companies, in two completely different tech segments.

Idle rambling. My thoughts only. But it's becoming even more fascinating as each day goes by.

My hunch:
  • too much prudence-signaling; and,
  • not enough realism-acknowledging (reality-awareness).

Thought-provoking: prudence-signaling vs realism-acknowledging. I spent much of Memorial Day weekend (2024) "studying" this. Very, very interesting. Many CNBC talking heads seem to be masters of "prudence-signaling." In the process, are they missing the bigger stories? See disclaimers.

Could McDonald's Have A Mulvaney Moment? June 2, 2024

Locator: 48031FASTFOOD.

Could McDonald's have a Mulvaney Moment?

Not being woke, but a huge marketing mistake.

I've talked about this before.

With "everyone" from the US President down focusing on $18-dollar Big Macs, McDonald's introduces the $5-meal.

For one month.

  • corporate McDonald's can absorb it;
  • franchisees cannot.

Then, one month later, the Big Mac goes to its "regular price" which could mean we're back to the $10-dollar Big Mac Meal.

Let's see, $5 now (the month of June) and then $10 starting again in July. What's that? Yeah, a 100% increase in price -- exactly what McDonald's says is not happening.

From Yahoo!Finance today (go to this link to the links in the screenshot below). Not a pretty picture for McDonald's.

From today's Yahoo!Briefing:

Exactly what I wrote two years ago.

****************************
Re-Posting

From November 23, 2022.

On buying a house, these are my observations for folks in my socioeconomic demographic:

  • the price of the house is of little importance (don't take that out of context):
  • the house bought is based on the monthly outlay (principal, interest, insurance, property taxes, etc)

With "free money" or interest rates at zero percent:

  • folks will buy a $400,000 house for $600,000;

With "expensive money" or interest rates at twelve percent:

  • folks will buy a $600,000 house for $400,000.

Experts / realtors will tell folks to buy the "most" house they can afford

  • that they can afford = monthly cash outflow

Monthly cash outflow:

  • if folks think they can afford $3,000 / month, the realtor will convince the buyers they can come up with $4,000 / month
  • buyers will come up with $3,600 / month on their "back-of-the-envelope" budget
  • if they were able to budget $3,000 / month, they will do whatever it takes to come up with that extra $600 / month
  • buying a home becomes a way to force one to save

$600 / month =

  • $6 / day at Starbucks, five days a week, 20 days a month = $120
  • four nights / month out for dinner for a family of four, $100 x 4 = $400

The first two years will be incredibly tough, very painful for the family.

At the end of the first two years, the family will become used to meeting the monthly mortgage.

By the third year, the family may, in fact, have more disposable income than they did two years earlier

  • (pay raise; wife returns to work; second job; more overtime; bonuses; inheritance; family help; tax breaks with a big house)

Interest rates tend to cycle, fluctuate, change (not always, granted).

If the family buys the $600,000-house for $400,000 with "expensive money" they will be in a very different place two years after they buy the house than if the family buys a $400,000-house for $600,000 with "free money.

Now, break, break. Where would you rather be two years from now: in a $400K house you bought for $600K with "free money" or in a $600K house you bought for $400K with "expensive money."

We're going to stop here and come back to this tomorrow.

My thoughts may be very naive, but playing devil's advocate this is where I am right now in this thought experiment.

I thought about this on November 5, 2022, just three weeks ago, and I posted a short note on the blog at the time.

Investing: best years of investing in front of us.

Consider the source, a goldbug, but I can't disagree.

"Expect five years more of problematic inflation."

Two points:

  • the gap between investors and savers will widen immensely;
  • this year and next will be the best two years to buy a new house.

My thoughts have not changed. I think I'm right on this. It works in an interest rate environment between 0% and 6%. I'm not sure if it would work in a 14-percent environment like we had under the Carter administration.

This "thought experiment" came up again today with the release of the University of Michigan's monthly "Surveys of Consumers.

But for now, ask yourself where you would rather be in 2026:

  • owning a $400,000-house bought for $600,000 with "free money" in 2020 or,
  • owning a $600,000-house bought for $400,000 with "expensive money" in 2023 (or 2024)?

If the "$400,000-house" and the "$600,000-house" analogy is confusing or doesn't make sense, substitute the phrase "the most house you can afford" for the dollar figure.

And this whole thought experiment might not make any sense to anyone but me, but I'll come back to it tomorrow to see where my thinking is faulty.

It should be fun.

Portland, Oregon, National Guard To Receive First Operational F-15EX; Top Speed Just Under Mach 3; Fast, But Not Stealthy -- June 2, 2024

Locator: 48026USAF.

First USAF base to receive the brand new fighter was Eglin AFB in Florida, but they were for final testing. First operational F-15EX fighters are arriving at Portland, Oregon. I think I can see China from Portland.

The first operational F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets will be assigned to the 142nd Wing of the Oregon Air National Guard, the unit that intercepts hostile aircraft over the northwest United States.
The initial instructor pilots from the Portland-based wing were at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida to fly training versions of the jet, which the Air Force said can exceed twice the speed of sound.
“The first two will arrive this summer (2024),” said Lt. Col. Joel Thesing, the 142nd Wing’s safety officer who was among the pilots.
In St. Louis, the first F-15EX bound for the Oregon wing rolled off the Boeing assembly line earlier this month (March, 2024).
The Air Force has slated 18 F-15EX to be operational at the 142nd Wing by the end of 2025
Thesing said the exterior profile of the aircraft resembles the F-15C jets now flown by the wing, but the new jets are nimbler to maneuver and the large-area display for avionics improves a pilot’s ability to process what was going on inside and outside the aircraft. “It’s a generational leap,” he said.
Boeing said in February the top speed for the F-15EX is 2,225 miles per hour – more than Mach 2.7 at sea level (where air is densest.)

Despite the Justice Department's concern with monopolies -- especially in the oil patch -- the department seems to have no problem with monopolies in the a/c manufacturing industries. Quick: name two other American a/c manufacturers that build planes for the US Air Force.
The first operational F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets will be assigned to the 142nd Wing of the Oregon Air National Guard, the unit that intercepts hostile aircraft over the northwest United States, the Air Force said. Grace Slick and Belinda Carlisle: back-up singers? For Ronnie Spector? Link here.

Okay.

Grace Slick. No introduction needed.

Belinda Carlisle:

Belinda Jo Carlisle, born August 17, 1958, is an American singer and songwriter. She gained fame as the lead vocalist of the Go-Go's, the most successful all-female rock band of all time, and went on to have a prolific career as a solo artist.
Raised in Southern California, Carlisle became the lead vocalist of the Go-Go's after the band's formation in 1978. With their chart-topping debut studio album "Beauty and the Beat" in 1981, the group helped popularize new wave music in the United States.
The Go-Go's were the first (and to date only) all-female band in history who wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to achieve a No. 1 album. The Go-Go's have sold over seven million records worldwide.

The Best Years Of My Life

Eileen.

The Brits know how to celebrate.

This is New Year's Eve. What a great song. It needs to be played just before midnight, New Year's Eve, followed by, of course, "Auld Lang Syne." Or maybe vice verse. "Auld Lang Syne" just before midnight, followed by Eileen at 12:00:01

There seem to be a gazillion versions of this song on the web. This one -- the link above -- may be the best for "audience participation."

But, my favorite might be this one:

Until tonight I've been unable to say why this might be my favorite, but I finally figured it out.

Before the "event," Sugarland (Jennifer Nettles) would have likely been the obvious #1 to Sara Bareilles' #2.

But #2 was going to challenge #1 for that number one position.

Look at the incredible friendly "competition" between those two.

I've gone back and forth: but tonight, I guess I have to give the "win" to Jennifer Nettles. After a dozen views, it comes back to the first 42 seconds. But wow, the energy, the spiritedness, the fire-passion-ardor-zeal of the two --- can it get any better?

The original. And, "as it should have sounded."

My laptop is out of juice, battery at 14%. Time to call it a night. Good luck to all.
