She's a mystery. OXY.

Earlier this week I received a note about a rumor that OXY had sold its North Dakota assets. OXY had announced last year (2014) that it was shopping its 330,000 acres in North Dakota. OXY also said in late 2014 / early 2015 (I forget) that it had no plans to do any drilling in North Dakota in 2015.

But nothing in the news ... until yesterday. And then, surprise, surprise. OXY has two new permits in southwest North Dakota, both for additional Stroh wells. The Stroh wells featured heavily in my early days of blogging about the Bakken.

Generally, a permit is issued with the expectation that the operator will begin drilling within a year of getting the permit. If not, it's easy to renew the permit, but generally operators don't go around applying for permits without plans to drill. So, it's a mystery.

And the only reason I'm posting this, is so I can post this:

Seven (7) New Permits -- OXY Reports Another Well -- The Williston Basin, North Dakota, USA

Daily activity report, June 11, 2012 --

Triangle's new permit is in Buffalo Wallow. Buffalo Wallow oil field is a smallish, long/narrow field just to the east of Red Wing Creek in central McKenzie County. Triangle has picked up some nice acreage in the Bakken. I'm impressed.

The permits for the four BEXP wells will be on one pad in the Poe field.  The Poe field is in the bull's eye of the Bakken, slightly to the west perhaps, in northeastern McKenzie County. These wells will be only 30 feet from each other; extremely close siting; I usually see 50 feet between wells. That walking rig won't have to walk far -- literally a hop, skip, and jump for the three wells after the completing the first. The Poe field is part of KOG's Koala prospect.

Coincidentally, I just happened to mention yesterday that BR typically puts their wells on SI status and then some time later completes them and reports an IP. Today, two more examples, and both very good wells, typical of BR:

Look at the numbers, then look at the fracture: 5 stages and < 400,000 lbs of proppant (BEXP often uses 36 stages and 4 million lbs of proppants, as comparison)

The Dennis Kadrmas well has had production since January, 2011, and has also been off-life for short stretches (2 - 3 weeks) periodically (Feb - April 2011; Nov 2011). For example, in the month of November, 2011, this well was productive for only 12 days.

Original Post

I have always been fascinated by the Stroh wells and the Fayette field. I have a "Stroh" tag/label at the bottom of the blog. I first blogged about the Stroh wells and Fayette field back on March 4, 2010.

Now, elsewhere they're talking about something very, very interesting: how the Harry Stroh well jumped frm 12,000 bbls in almost a full month of production in September, 2011, to 33,000 bbls in only fourteen (14) days in October.

This well is very, very instructive for folks new to the Bakken. It may explain why Schlumberger and Baker Hughes are building new complexes much bigger than one might expect, even in the Bakken.

A recurring theme in this blog is that it's my impression that the oil companies are not telling us how rich the Bakken really is. Harold Hamm is one of the few who seems to be forthcoming, and there are not a lot of folks publicly supporting his estimates.

This well was choked back to less than half-an-inch when it was tested.

According to the well file:

• January 18, 2011: spudded
• April 4, 2011: reached total depth
• October 12, 2011: tested, IP: 877

Then it gets interesting, page 3, well specific stimulations:

• August 13, 2011: stimulated
• Stages: 5
• Proppant: sand
• Total amount of proppant: 393,300 pounds

For newbies: routinely operators are now fracking 24 stages, generally a bit higher, and BEXP routines fracks 36 stages. Note: On August 13, 2011, this well was fracked with five (5) stages

For newbies: routinely, folks are using two- to 4-million pounds of sand/ceramics to frack a well; this well was fracked with 393,000 pounds, a tenth of the usual amount.

The well was off-line for 2 days in September and 14 days in October.

Production:

• September, 28 days: 11,659 bbls
• October, 14 days: 33,295 bbls

It's fairly obvious what happened here, but as usual I'm holding my thoughts until others chime in. I'm just a layperson in all this; I will let the experts chime in first. If I remember, I will come back with my hunch later this week.

Update on Two Burlington Resources Stroh Permits That Were Canceled -- Bakken, North Dakota, USA

Elsewhere someone asked about the Elizabeth and Cecilia Stroh wells; both permits were canceled effective August 4, 2011.

I have followed the Stroh wells for a very long time; they are located in a very nice Bakken area: the Fayette and Cabernet oil fields.

Cabernet Field Updated -- Bakken, North Dakota, USA

Someone asked if I might update Cabernet oil field.

I updated the field; all IPs and cumulatives have been updated on the Cabernet oil field page.

Here are some very, very good wells from the Cabernet field. The "number" in bold (e.g., 198K, is the cumulative total of oil produced so far. I consider any well getting to 100k within a year to be a very good well.

Thirteen (13) New Permits -- Bakken, North Dakota, USA

This is very, very exciting. I think we have had new permits touching double digits each day this week; that may be a record in North Dakota in recent history.

Drillers: Enerplus (8),  Slawson (2), North Plains (2), Hess.

Fields: McGregory Buttes, Van Hook, Truax, and Dollar Joe.

Eight of the Enerplus wells will be on one pad in McGregory Buttes oil field.

The two Slawson wells will be on one permit in Van Hook oil field.

Today's daily activity report also show a change of operator from Anschutz to OXY USA for about 85 wells, including some great wells, including the Stroh wells.

Also, two nice wells reported -- one for BEXP and one for Slawson, reported elsewhere.

Update on the Stroh Wells -- Fayette Field -- Bakken, North Dakota, USA

Update

August 4, 2011: permits for both wells below are now PNC: permits now canceled. The current operator is listed as Burlington Resources. The original operator was Anschutz.

I do not know why the permits were canceled. In 2010, Anschutz sold most of its property to OXY USA. Within the past few days there was a press release that said Anschutz sold its remaining Bakken acreage, but the name of the buyer was not released.
I am not sure how Burlington Resources got into the mix and how it became the current operator. Anschutz sold most of its property to OXY USA and the rest of it to an unidentified Canadian company (at least that's what I seem to remember). It is interesting that BR has a well right next to your land. My hunch is that multiple folks had interests in this land (BR, Anschutz, others).


When Anschutz sold out, BR grabbed the opportunity to get a permit there (again a hunch), but when
the dust settled, for whatever reason, the permits were canceled.

This area is so good, I am sure that these wells will be drilled. It's possible BR is moving the pad to a new site, and thus they canceled the permits, to request new ones. I doubt that. More likely it has something to do with the recent announcement that Anschutz sold the last of its assets to a private Canadian oil company.

My hunch is that the Canadian company will drill those wells.

On another note, the Raphael Stroh well discussed before has now produced more than 85,000 bbls of oil (spud 3/10; tested 11/10; 85,000 bbls by 6/11) -- pretty impressive.

A reader sent in the following information earlier today:

Anschutz well, file #18423, Raphael Stroh 1-13-24H-143-97 as of the week of Dec 26, 2010 the well has produced approximately 52,000 bbls of oil. The current flow rate is approximately 597 bbls oil per day. The well was fractured about Nov 11, 2010 with an initial production rate of approximately 2409 bbls oil per day.

The tentative drilling date for the dual pad Elizabeth and Cecilia Stroh well is July of 2011. Always subject to change.

A very, very nice well:

Another Stroh Well in Fayette Field

Anschutz well, file #18423, Raphael Stroh 1-13-24H-143-97, Fayette field, comes off the confidential list today (September 23, 2010). An IP is not provided, but the first report says it produced 245 bbls "the first day." But we have no idea how long the well was flowing that first day -- one hour or 24 hours. Update: see comment below, dated January 3, 2010 -- the IP is said to have been 2,409.  Fracked in November, this well has apparently produced about 50,000 bbls of oil; at $50/bbl, that's $2.5 million at the wellhead. At $75/bbl, and at current rate of 500 bbls/day, that works out to about $1 million/month.

Update, October 31, 2010: Great news! Happy Halloween! See comments below. I've been sent an update on the Raphael Stroh well: The broken plug has been extracted from the casing. The fracturing tube has been inserted and is waiting for the fracturing equipment to come on site Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. The well was produced for a short time to clean out the tubing and it was noted the unfractured production rate was 40 bbl per hour or 960 bbl per day.

Update, September 26, 2010: see comments below -- we get the rest of the story for the Raphael Stroh well:  "Sept 26, 2010. This well has not been completed yet. A casing plug broke off in the casing as they were going to start the fracturing process. A workover rig needs to be brought in to remove the plug and fracture the formation. The twin well to it on the dual pad going 2 miles north underground had an IP of 2,500 BBL and 1,000,000 cu ft gas per day."

The twin well on that pad would be the Kenneth Stroh well.

Connecting the Anschutz/Stroh Dots in the Cabernet Oil Field (Bakken, North Dakota, USA)

This is a complicated note; if you have a second screen, put up the NDIC GIS map server as you connect these dots about some incredible Anschutz wells in the Cabernet and Fayette oil fields. 

Coming off the confidential list today, Anschutz reported a great well in the Cabernet oil field:

• 18424, 2,409, Anschutz, Kenneth Stroh 1-12-1H-143-97, Cabernet, Bakken  
• There is a second well on this pad, 18423, the Raphael Stroh 1-13--24H-143-97

Last month, in the August 13, 2010, daily activity report:

So, Anschutz reports two nice wells in (or right on the border of) the Cabernet oil field.

Hold that thought. 

Back on August 5, 2010, I wrote that one of the best blogs ever posted regarding the Bakken referenced the Anschutz in the Cabernet field and was posted by "Teegue", dated September 17, 2009. I linked that posting from the very beginning.

In August, one year after Teegue posted his note about Anschutz in the Cabernet, Anschutz reported a great well, a well that had produced 40,000 barrels before it was even fracked (I don't have an update regarding production to date and whether it has been fracked):

• 18644, State 1-25-36H-144-97X, Cabernet, 24-144-97, 3,294, 40k in 40 days, un-fracked

Now, back to that thought I asked to you to hold: in the immediate area, but in the Fayette oil field, Anschutz has four more permits:

• 18611: DRL, OXY USA, Evelyn Stroh 1-17-20H-143-96, Dunn
• 18610: DRL, OXY USA, Harry Stroh 1-8-5H-143-96, Dunn
• 18503: PNC, Burlington Resources, Cecilia Stroh 1-18-19H-143-96, Dunn

BR contested these Anschutz permits and went to the NDIC in August, 2010, to have these permits permits revoked. With such great wells, I can understand why. I discussed that at Gun Fight at the OK Corral. I have not heard the results of that hearing but until told otherwise, I will assume these are still Anschutz wells.

Now, add this to the mix (all of the following are in the  Fayette oil field) and they are all Anschutz wells:

18822 and 18823 are on the same pad; 19422 and 19423 are on the same pad; 18772 and 18773 are on the same pad. 

It's taken a bit of time, but it's starting to come together. These Anschutz wells are about as far southeast in the Bakken as one gets. One wonders if the Williston Basin, at one time being one huge sea or lake, if this area was more shallow, and maybe a thicker formation. I am not a geologist and if I had the time, I suppose one could go back to all the geological links at this site, but that's more than I care to do right now.

Regardless how it all plays out, it appears that (where the Cabernet, Fayette, and Murphy Creek come together in the southeast area of the Bakken) there is another "hot spot" in the Bakken.  It looks like it's "owned" by Anschutz. By the way, just as the Bakken tends to end to the southeast (in this area), the TFS formation continues south and east.

Cabernet Field

If it weren't for the fact that Anschutz has caught my interest and the fact that Anschutz has had some good wells I would not have gotten too excited about the Cabernet field.

The Cabernet field is a small field, only 21 sections, mostly in township T144N-97W. It is in Dunn County, about 20 miles due north of Dickinson, or about 20 miles southwest of Killdeer, which is well southwest of the reservation. It is nestled in between three other fields that are more active and have had some good wells: the Little Knife to the northwest; Murphy Creek to the northeast; and, the Fayette, to the southeast. Anschutz is also very active in the Fayette. It appears that the Cabernet and the Fayette fields are "owned" by Anschutz.

Right now there are only six file numbers from the current boom inside the Cabernet, including Anschutz's short lateral, #17899: the Stroh 11-1H well had an IP of 1,191 which was reported January, 2010. The rig that was on site #18644, State 1-25-36H-144-97X, has now moved and is now drilling #18427, Matthew Schmidt 1-35-2H-143-97.

There are four (4) other file numbers, all on the confidential list, in the Cabernet: #18343, #18427, #18359, and #18360.  Three of the wells (are on the same site, #18644, #18359, and #18360: State 1-25-36H-144-97X; Kary 1-24-13H-144-97; and, State 1-25-36H-144-97.  These three wells are only two miles north of the Stroh 11-1H. We will soon get to see if the Stroh was an outlier or if the Cabernet is a great field, albeit very small.

As with most other fields in North Dakota, there are no hamlets, villages, or towns; just beautiful scenery, enjoyed by pronghorn and pheasants.

January 3, 2010: Just a reminder. Anschutz oil operations in the Bakken, which "owns" the Fayette and the Cabernet oil fields, was acquired by Occidental in late 2010.

March 31, 2010: Anschutz #18722 is now being drilled. This is just a single well on this pad, so far, but with the spate of Anschutz "dual well pads" I wouldn't be surprised to see another permit/another well drilled here. This is in section 36-143-97, in the very southwest corner of Fayette field.

March 17, 2010: Anschutz was granted two more permits today; both are on the same pad, 9-143-96: Dennis Kadrmas and State. Kadrmas will go north (sections 9 and 4) and State will go south (section 16 and 21. 

Original Posting: The Fayette Field Update

Snapshot: The Fayette is a small field, only 32 sections. At one time it was the farthest south of any of the active fields in the Bakken but CLR and WLL are now moving farther south and even a bit east. The most notable thing about this field was the number of pads with two wells that Anschutz was putting in (Anschutz assets in the Bakken have since been bought by Occidental.)

Fourteen permits were granted for Fayette oil field in 2010, all of them Anschutz.

Update: Anschutz reported a nice well in the Cabernet with an IP of 1,661. That got my attention, especially after the Bakken Shale blog posting some months ago.

Later, Anschutz was granted two permits, #18772 and #18773, in the Fayette field, a field adjoining the Cabernet field, and just a few miles from the recently reported Anschutz well. And that's the reason I decided to take a closer look / update of the Fayette oil field.

Those two wells (18772 and 18773) will be on the same pad, less than 25 feet from each other. Anschutz has two more pads in the Fayette, each with two permits. I don't know if the "dual wells" will target two different formations or whether they will target the same formation in different sections. Time will tell for these two dual permits, #18423 and #18424; and, #18610 and #18611. My hunch: the laterals will go in opposite directions, targeting the TFS.

On March 17, Anschutz added two more permits, #18822 and #18223.

At the end of 2010, Anschutz had four pads in Fayette field, each to have two wells. The other permits were for single-well pads.

It should be noted that Anschutz has another well, permit # 18463, sited on section 18 just inside the Fayette oil field; however, this is a Cabernet well according to the permit. That was the Elizabeth Stroh 1-7-6H-143-96 well which was PNC'd.

So, what do we have? We have a company with a proven record outside the Bakken, with a recently reported great well with an IP of 1,661 just a few miles north of the area under discussion, and now four pairs of wells inside the Fayette.

The Fayette is a very small field. It is all of 32 sections and is, for the most part, T143N-96W. As noted earlier, it adjoins the Cabernet to the immediate northwest. It adjoins the very active Murphy Creek field to the north. The Fayette's northeast corner is 25 miles southwest of the southwest corner of the FBIR. The Fayette is the farthest south of all the active oil fields in North Dakota except for the far southwest corner.

Anschutz "owns" the Fayette. Other than the four pairs of Anschutz wells and a single Anschutz well (all confidential), there is nothing else going on in the Fayette except for an old lateral, #12840. 

There are no hamlets, villages, towns or cities in the Fayette field. ND State Highway 22 forms the eastern boundary of the Fayette field for about two miles, along sections 24 and 25. It's a very beautiful drive, directly south of Killdeer. In fact, I believe highway 22 is highlighted as a "scenic route" on the official North Dakota state map.
