Why I Love To Blog, Reason #1 -- Now I Know What All The Excitement Was About -- Updating Nine Point Energy' Wells In Eightmile -- May 30, 2020

This is really, really cool, on so many levels. I actually missed this story for several days, maybe weeks, but with time on my hands today, I decided to take a look.

At the sidebar at the right, there is an app that posts the top ten trending posts. Most top trending posts are recent posts, but when an "old" post rises to the top, it's time to take a look.

See this post. The original post was January 28, 2020. At that time, the most recent production data was for the month 11/19. At that time all completed wells were producing.

It is strange to see a post this old to be trending among the top ten. So, let's take a look.

Well, well, well. What do we see? The producing wells at the time of the original post are now all off line; and, the wells that were on "drl" status are now producing and have moved to the conf list. And finally the wells that were producing a small amount back in November, 2019, are now into full production.

So, now we know. The mom-and-pop mineral rights owners were checking into see what was going on. They must have received their royalty checks. Whoo-hoo!

There are so many story lines here:
  • first, of course, the royalty checks for small mineral owners;
  • second, once the price oil "comes back," the checks will be bigger;
  • third, this opens up an entire new area for E&P;
  • fourth, hopefully Nine Point Energy can hang through this downturn; they've been through this once before;
  • fifth, the tenacity, the persistence, the git 'er done attitude of oil men and women; and,
  • probably a lot more.
By the way,  a huge apology for failing to get this posted. I completely missed it. I'm sure a lot of mineral owners were upset with my delay in getting this posted. I learned a lesson.

The Enerplus Patriot Pad Wells Have Been Updated -- May 18, 2020

Production data for the Enerplus Patriot pad wells has been updated several times. I finally got my act together on this pad. The production data and the wells will be updated at this post.

These are extended long laterals, or super-long laterals or 3-section laterals, whatever one wants to call them. These are incredibly good wells. One is approaching 700,000 bbls of oil, cumulative since 2014.

Note: three of the four wells are 3-section laterals; one of the four is a standard two-section lateral. Based on cumulative production, one can guess as to the standard two-section lateral.

May 30, 2020: these wells have been updated here; at a later date this post will be updated but I want folks to see what this looked like back in November, and compare to that to the update at the link. Updated graphic:

Original Post

Eightmile oil field is southwest of Williston, heading out toward Montana, north of the river. I would consider this immediate area Tier 2, maybe Tier 3, based on historic activity. But all of a sudden, a bit of activity.

A Blow-Out In The Bakken, Under Control; Contained For The Most Part; Fairly Good Size; No Injuries -- September 1, 2015

I missed this one; a reader alerted me to it. Reuters is reporting:
A North Dakota oil well owned by Exxon Mobil subsidiary XTO Energy blew out on Saturday, leaking more than 550 barrels (23,100 gallons) of crude, some of which left the wellpad and seeped into surrounding grasses.
The well, located in a rural area 25 miles southeast of Watford City, was being hydraulic fractured when its pressure control valves failed and it leaked the oil and about 110 barrels (4,620) of saltwater.
The well was brought under control on Sunday morning. No one was injured.
The well, Deep Creek Federal 43X-5D (#30042), is located on the same drilling pad as four other wells and was first drilled on April 25.
This is on a 5-well pad. Two were older wells, completed some time ago. Two new wells are on the pad, and one of them was one that had the blowout.

A quick look at the other two older wells on the pad: one had a minimal geologist's report; the other has a pretty in-depth report. Background gases jumped up to over 8,000 during various pipe connections. That's fairly high pressure in the Bakken, but not unusual. If there are no equipment failures, it seems operators deal with these pressures without incident ....

... the reader that alerted me to the story had some thoughts/insights on background. There is no question the operator will study this very, very hard and will learn more about the Bakken if it turns out that all equipment and parts (valves, etc) were in good working order and that all procedures were followed.

The size of the blowout is a fairly significant: 550 bbls. Significant in terms of getting one's attention if one was on-site or in the area to observe it. The typical storage tank on-site in the Bakken is 400 bbls.

XTO's Propsed Five-Well JMB Pad In Capa Oil Field -- August 31, 2015

XTO has five new permits in Capa oil field, Williams County.

I'll come back to this later, but note the triple lateral about a mile away to the southeast. The Bakken never fails to surprise.

I already know how the roughnecks will refer to this 5-well pad.

The Enerplus Patriot Pad: Honor, Grace, Courage, And Pride

Updates

October 3, 2024: production updated.

September 25, 2021: production updated.

May 18, 2020: production data updated. This is where these wells will be tracked going forward.

January 12, 2015: the production numbers for these four wells have been updated elsewhere. The original post may or may not be updated going forward.

Original Post

Enerplus Resources has a well pad in the Spotted Horn oil field with some interesting well names.

I've always assumed Spotted Horn was named after Chief Spotted Horn of the Assiniboine mentioned in the journal of Rudolph Friedrich Kurz, 1851 - 1852. Families names and genealogy of native Americans have always been a challenge for me, and if I do not read of their history on a regular basis, I forget the history.

Be that as it may, as I was saying has interesting names for four new wells in Spotted Horn oil field:
  • 23541,1,545, Enerplus Resources, Honor 150-94-06B-18H TF, Spotted Horn, t6/14; cum 704K 12/20; off line 5/20; returned to production 9/20; cum 726K 7/21; cum 748K 4/22; cum 766K 12/22; cum 788K 8/23; off line; new wells on pad being fracked;
