Kansas City Chiefs -- Holy Mackerel -- What A Finish -- LOL -- December 8, 2024

Locator: 48354WAR.

WTI: we almost have a major war break out in the Mideast; Assad falls; the Mideast map is being redrawn as we speak; the US carries out massive air strikes in Iran's backyard and the price of oil .... wait for it ... barely moves, and stays well below $70. Absolutely amazing.

Even more amazing: the US carries out a massive strike on who-knows-what in the Mideast, and most of us completely missed it, watching old movies on TCM or the NFL football game ... it will be interesting to read about it later ... what amazes me most .... again, B-52s and A-10s and F-15s

This tells me the military is in charge and President Biden is simply nodding his approval. Had it just been F-15s, that would have been one thing, but A-10s? But when you really want to take out targets, you call in the B-52s. Besides taking care of business, this sends a huge message to every adversary in the Mideast. The US military is in charge.
My hunch, Kamala Harris wasn't even in the "Situation Room" when the military was giving Biden the standard three options with the military presenting its preferred option. I'm probably wrong, but if she was there, she was simply a spectator, nodding along with President Biden.

75+ airstrikes on Isis targets inside Syria. That would have included a huge infrastructure organized, owned, and operated by Iran.

Link here. Also, here.

That B-52 -- absolutely amazing. Apparently no civilian casualties.

Meanwhile, Israel continues to beef up its resources in the Golan Heights. The Mideast map is being re-drawn. I suppose one thing Iran learned in the last 72 hours: Russia is not likely to be much help if Iran asks for help.

Best way to "maybe" follow the Syrian story is searching "air strikes" on "X" and on Bluesky. Interestingly enough, the two social media sites ("X" and Bluesky) complement each other; neither site is necessarily "better" than the other in this situation. The one thing being presented by both "X" and Bluesky that is not being reported by mainstream legacy media (yet) is the degree to which the IDF (Israelis) seem to be "taking advantage" of the situation.

See disclaimer. Idle rambling. Everything needs to be fact-checked.

Updates

Later, 6:52 p.m. CST: I posted the original note below earlier today. Now this from CNBC: analysts tout these three energy companies for their nice dividends: Chevron, Energy Transfer, and EPD.

Original Post

Link to The WSJ:

That would be a welcome sight for dividend investors, as large U.S. companies’ payouts haven’t kept pace with the market’s rally. This week, the S&P 500’s dividend yield, which measures dividend payouts relative to stock price, hit a 20-year low when it dropped below 1.19%.

And even more specifically, dividends may be the only thing keeping the "legacy" energy stocks above water.

Recipes: Beef Stroganoff

The only thing one might need to stop by the grocer for this recipe: beef and sour cream; maybe an onion. One should already have all the other ingredients in the pantry.

Pasta: boil while preparing the beef stroganoff.

As Those RMDs Come Due -- Where Next? December 8, 2024

Locator: 44504INV.

For me, the best option: 529s.

  • Investments grow tax-free and distributions are tax-free.
  • some say the returns on 529s may not be great but:
    • a) 529s need to be relatively conservative to ensure the money will be there when the individual needs it;
    • b) growing tax-free with tax-free distributions are generally not factored into the rate of return, and the higher one's tax margin, the better these 529s look;
    • c) but if concerned about return and safety, consider a brokerage account dedicated toward a child's education during the years when the child is one to fourteen years of age; then move that account into a 529 for the last four years.
      • one may get a higher rate of return in the early years (though taxable), and then,
      • get the assurance of safety as the child approaches college; and
  • the full amount is available at that time; one doesn't have to be concerned about distribution taxes
  • for the most part, I'm doing the latter: higher risk, taxed accounts for grandchildren until age 12 - 14; then moving into 529's after age 12 - 14; an 80-20 mix for the first twelve years; a 20-80 mix for the last four years before they need the money for education.

A second option: ETFs.

Morningstar rates the ETFs: link here.

A third option: gift to family members who can use the cash to max out their own IRAs, including spousal IRAs.

Other options: I assume there are many, but that's where I'm starting.

One option I don't like: accounts for minors (except 529s). Examples of accounts for minors: link here.

The Book Page

Sophia is interested in marine biology, specifically sharks, and would like to go to San Diego to get her degree in marine biology: Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Out-of-state tuition would be prohibitive. I'm trying to convince her a better option: Flinders University, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.

The books Sophia and I are tackling this month:

  • Evolution: The Whole Story, General Editor, Steve Parker; Foreword by Alice Roberts, Thames & Hudson.
  • The Secret History of Sharks: The Rise of the Ocean's Most Fearsome Predators, John Long, c. 2024

The second book, John Long's, is the primary book and has just been released. The first book, Evolution, is perhaps the "bible" of "evolution." It's a reference book and not to be read straight through. It is incredibly well organized and the graphics are incredible.

My notes on sharks are updated here.

What excites me with these two books at this point in time with Sophia and me:

  • a better understanding of mass extinctions
  • sharks -- one of the longest living vertebrates?
    • years to evolve: 465 million years and counting
  • remarkable for ability to survive the huge mass extinctions, changing environments; changing predators (p. 11)
  • cartilaginous -- unique; more flexible than bony fish
  • diverse species; unique niches
  • evolution: homeobox genes probably more important than mutations when it comes to evolution -- p. 11 -- homeobox discovered 1984 (I graduated from high school, 1969; college, 1973; and, medical school, 1977).

Apple -- iPhone 17 -- New Chip Configuration -- mmWave -- December 8, 2024

Locator: 44503APPLE.

Tag: AAPL.

This article re-affirms my feeling that Apple needs to move to a subscription model with regard to the iPhone. For $100 / month one always has the latest version of the iPhone. Changes to the monthly subscription plan can be changed when new iPhone models are released.

Link here.

From my perspective, author of the article at the link and social media comments suggest folks are focused on the wrong thing: thinness.

The real focus should be on:

  • future of Apple and Qualcomm as partners;
  • new chip design; and,
  • mmWave (almost synonymous with "5G")

From the linked article:

Apple will equip the ‌iPhone 17‌ Air with its own custom-designed 5G modem chip, and that chip is smaller than 5G modem chips from Qualcomm.
Apple [may be] focused on making the chip more integrated with other Apple-designed components to save space within the ‌iPhone‌, and that space savings is what allowed it to create the slimmed down ‌iPhone 17‌ Air without sacrificing battery life, the camera, or the display quality.
As Apple improves its modem chip design, the saved space could allow for "new designs" such as a foldable ‌iPhone‌.
Apple [may be] continuing to explore foldable ‌iPhone‌ technology. Apple is aiming to phase out Qualcomm modems across a three-year period as Apple introduces increasingly more powerful modem chips.
Eventually, Apple could debut a system-on-a-chip that includes a processor, modem, Wi-Fi chip, and other parts, which would save additional space and allow for tighter integration between hardware components.

Question: where do you have the most problem accessing websites via wi-fi? High traffic areas, such as airports, and shopping malls. The answer to this problem: mmWave.
