Will a Newly Sanctioned Pipeline Give the Bakken a Big Surplus of Gas Takeaway? RBN Energy -- October 13, 2026

RBN Energy: will a newly sanctioned pipeline give the Bakken a big surplus of gas takeaway? Link here. Archived.

The developer of a planned natural gas pipeline across North Dakota has reached a final investment decision (FID) after securing long-term, demand-side commitments for almost all its 1.4 Bcf/d of capacity. The question is, with crude oil-focused drilling activity in the Bakken flat despite elevated WTI prices, will WBI Energy’s roughly $3 billion Bakken East Pipeline leave the play with way too much gas takeaway space? In today’s RBN blog, we’ll discuss the pipeline project, the financial support the state of North Dakota is providing, and the conflicting forecasts for crude oil and associated gas production in the Bakken.

Over the past 15 years we’ve written frequently about the ongoing need to build more midstream infrastructure to serve Bakken production. Crude oil gathering systems and takeaway pipelines. Crude-by-rail terminals. Gas gathering systems and gas processing plants. And, most recently, natural gas and NGL pipelines. Why? Because while Bakken oil production has been holding steady at about 1.2 MMb/d — well below the play’s 1.5-MMb/d peak in 2019 — a fast-rising gas-to-oil ratio (GOR) has increased the volumes of NGLs-rich associated gas being produced. (More on Bakken GORs and the play’s gas production outlook in a moment.)

The Bakken East Pipeline Project

We covered the NGL-pipeline angle in July 2025’s Two Gunslingers. That same month we told the gas-pipeline story in Torn Between Two (Pipelines), which focused on competing proposals by WBI Energy (the Bakken East Pipeline) and a combo of Intensity Infrastructure Partners and Rainbow Energy Center (the Intensity Pipeline) to develop new gas takeaway capacity from the Bakken production region in western North Dakota to the Fargo area at the eastern edge of the state.

In a twist we discussed in that blog, the North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC) — eager to encourage more in-state use of the Bakken’s gas bounty — undertook a competitive evaluation process to determine which pipeline proposal would receive up to $500 million in state support via a 10-year, $50 million/year commitment for about 150 MMcf/d of capacity on the new pipe.

The three-member NDIC, comprised of the state’s governor, attorney general and agriculture commissioner, in August 2025 unanimously picked WBI Energy’s two-phase, 343-mile Bakken East proposal (dashed pink and red lines in Figure 1 below), citing the company’s experience in developing and operating gas pipelines and the financial strength of WBI’s corporate parent, Bismarck, ND-based MDU Resources, which also owns four electric and/or gas utilities from Minnesota to Washington state. In addition, the commission determined that WBI was more likely to secure the commercial commitments needed to make the project a “go.”

Apple iPhone And AMD -- Two Tech Stories For The Archives -- October 13, 2026

    Locator: 51933TECH.

These two developments were perhaps the biggest tech stories today.

    AMD: link here.

Shay Boloor: AMD CEO Lisa Su says CPU demand could “grow at approximately 50% CAGR” to over $200B by 2030 after raising her forecast three times in nine months as AI agents create entirely new demand for server processors.

If AMD captures the 50%+ market share Su is targeting, the EPYC alone could become a $100B+ business by 2030 with TSM wafer capacity essentially determining how quickly it gets there.

    Apple iPhone: link here.

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple saw its share of global smartphone shipments cross 20% for the first time in a third quarter, despite an industry-wide decline.

In a report released October 12, 2026, Counterpoint Research says memory constraints and rising prices have pushed global smartphone shipments to their lowest third-quarter level in 14 years, with a 20% year-over-year decline. The report doesn’t say what that translates to in absolute numbers.

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple shipped 22% of all smartphones during Q3 2026, up from 18% in the year-ago period. That helped it narrow the gap with Samsung, which remained in first place with a 23% share.

    Driving On Mars

From The New York Times, link here.

28 miles and counting: NASA's Perseverance rover sets a Mars driving record. Advances in self-driving technology have made it easier to traverse distant worlds. by Kenneth Chang.

    The article begins:
NASA’s Perseverance rover has now driven farther than any other vehicle in the solar system — except those on Earth, of course.

On Sunday, Perseverance’s odometer ticked past 28.06 miles, the distance it has traveled in and around Jezero Crater since it landed on Mars in February 2021. That surpasses the distance that Opportunity, one of NASA’s earlier, smaller Mars rovers, trundled from 2004 until it fell silent in 2018.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which operates the rover, announced the news on Monday after confirming Perseverance’s location and new total driving distance: 28.1 miles.

Mission managers had thought Perseverance would pass the milestone back in August, but then it came upon intriguing, light-colored rocks that may be some of the oldest ever studied on Mars. And thus, it dawdled for two months.

“Science is the reason that rover is on the surface of Mars,” Katie Stack Morgan, the project scientist, said in an interview in early October. “We’re excited to get the record when we get it. But in the meantime, it’s the rocks that really drive the mission.”

Perseverance most likely still has many miles to go in the coming years.

The article then continues with highlights from its excursions so far.
