Sad News: Texas State Girls Soccer Championship -- April 16, 2022

Olivia's team lost.

Wakeland High School, Frisco, TX, is a perennial favorite and champion.

Olivia's school Grapevine also has a very, very good reputation.

In today's championship game, Grapevine scored first but the score was tied 2 - 2 at the end of regulation time.

Overtime: two ten-minute periods, no sudden death.

No goals made by either team in the first overtime period.

Second overtime period: Wakeland scored a goal off a header from a corner kick. Time: the five-minute mark. Grapevine continued with strong offense but couldn't answer.

So, that was it.

But, wow, I doubt there's been a more exciting game. Two-two at the end of regulation time. And going down to the last few minutes of the last period in overtime.

Medals:

  • Olivia is a sophomore on the varsity team
  • first place in regionals
  • runner-up in state championship
  • her words after the game: next year.

    1. Thank you. Timeline:

      1. At the moment the winning goal was scored by the other team: devastation.

      2. One minute later: infinite grief.

      3. Five minutes later: smiles through tears getting their medals.

      4. Three hours later: at a sleepover.

      5. Today: wow, that was fun. Can hardly wait for next year.

  2. Perfect. It should hurt to get so close a goal and come up short. Just as important to realize life goes on and the sun does come up in the morning.
That view of life will get her far in life.

    1. And the best players on the team, including Olivia, are still playing "club" soccer -- a higher level of soccer and many tournaments ahead of them this summer. But, yes, it would have been nice to "take state."

    2. Olivia's mom says Olivia handles everything in life in a very compartmentalized fashion. She's already moved on. LOL.

  3. Used to coach youth soccer. U9-10 to U-13. Coach in the Northwest, envy the Texas weather that allows club/Elite games almost year-round

    1. You are so correct about that. And, in addition, inclement weather and they have a gazillion in-door soccer fields on which to practice. It's amazing.
