Observations From The Peanut Gallery -- January 4, 2026

Locator49790ARCHIVES.

Quick read: it may be time to take 30 seconds out of your busy schedule to read the wiki entry for the Bay of Pigs invasion. Seriously. Link here.

Trump: with three incredibly successful and audacious military acts -- all in his first year of a four-year term -- he was inaugurated January 20, 2025, slightly less than a full year ago -- Gaza (Hamas hostages), Iran (nuclear facilities), and now Venezuela, one can only imagine Trump seeing this as a "window" that may never open again: Cuba, Mexican drug cartels, Colombian drug cartels, Iran (again). TR: "walk softly but carry a big stick." DJT: "talk loudly, carry a big stick, and don't be afraid to use it."

North Texas weather: we had to turn on the air conditioner today. Early January. Global warming, and I love it.

NFL: it's my understanding that tonight's SNF game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens will determine a) who wins the AFC North Division; and, b) who moves on in the championship series.

Only one team from the AFC North will play in the post-season; no wildcard team will come from this division. If their franchise quarterbacks play, it will be Aaron Rogers vs Lamar Jackson. Can you say record views?

With a Ravens win, both teams finish the season 9 - 8 but because the Ravens would have a better division record, they take the divisional championship.

Dallas Cowboys: theme song on flight home back to Dallas. Link here. America's team hasn't won a national conference championship in 30 years. Thirty years. Let that sink in.

US politics: GOP presidential nominee, for 2028 election -- it is SecState Marco Rubio's to lose.

  • 15 vice presidents have become president
    • eight succeeded to the office upon death of their boss; of those four, only four went on to be elected president on their own; so, 11 VPs succeeded on their own?
  • Secretaries of State: six have gone on to become president, all in the 19th century
  • state governors: 17
  • US senators: 17
  • no prior political office: four (Zachary Taylor, US Grant, Ike, and The Don)
  • Rubio: US rep; US senator; SecState; never governor
  • JD Vance: two years as US senator before being picked by Trump to be the latter's VP

Venezuela: brilliant on so many levels.

Meanwhile, under Carter: eight killed and only eight Sea Stallion helicopters:

Quick! Name one successful military operation under President Biden.

Catbird's seat: Chevron. Mike Wirth is on speed dial Trump. Wirth and Chris Wright vying for Trump's attention. Trump wants price of gasoline to drop below $1.99. Could we see WTI below $40 two years from now?

Politician most likely to crash and burn politically: current mayor of NYC.

Tech and investing (large cap; well-known names):

  • everybody's favorite: Nvidia
    • for me, tough choice where to put money if given only two choices, NVID or AMD
  • most undervalued: Amazon [later, see below]
  • keeps showing up on every list: Micron
  • interesting: Broadcom
  • even more interesting: Oracle
  • most perplexing: Qualcomm
  • AI: ChatGPT; Anthropic; Google. The rest fade away.

Personal investing: most perplexing -- BRK.

Personal investing: major change this year -- will move from three ETFs to two ETFs in 2026.

  • currently: SCHB, SCHD, SCHG
  • will go to: SCHB, SCHD
  • rationale: SCHG and SCHB -- I can't see much difference

Perplexing.

  • is Trump the only non-politician politician who can think strategically? Venezuela was on its way to becoming a Chinese satellite. China desperately needed that oil.

Amazon

Several hours after posting the original post above, I came across this gem. Link here

Which then leads immediately to this AI prompt:

With regard to an earlier conversation -- the queue for "memory" with a focus on Nvidia and Micron -- where to you think Amazon Web Services (AWS) ranks in the queue for memory?

An absolutely fascinating discussion. Link here.
