Nobel Prizes -- T Cells -- October 6, 2025

Locator: 49298NOBEL.

Another connection with Stanford. At the end of the day, bragging rights to universities and entrepreneurs on the west coast (San Diego, Stanford, Seattle).

Looking forward to the book!

Incredibly: the folks who worked on a sub-set of T-cells win a Nobel prize, but Jacques Miller and Graham Mitchell did not win a Nobel Prize for their co-discovery of T-cells and B-cells. What this tells me: advances in medicine and physiology were amazing in the 1970s.

My hunch: research in virology and immunizations was where the excitement was.

I count twelve years in which Nobel Prizes in medicine and physiology were won for virology research and immunization research between 1946 and 2023. But the co-discoverers of the thymus, T-cells and B-cells were not so honored!

Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Monday for their discoveries of peripheral immune tolerance — the system that explains how the immune system prevents rogue cells from attacking tissues and organs. [The "Dr" in front of Sakuguchi's name is because he does have an MD degree; the other two were PhDs. Dr Sakkuguchi was a PhD.

  • Dr. Shimon Sakaguch: Osaka University
  • Celltech Chiroscience, a British-owned biotechnology, Seattle area
    • Mary E Brunkow: Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle
    • Fred Ramsell: Sonoma Bio, a biotechnology company based in San Francisco

The three researchers will split a prize of 11 million Swedish kroner, or around $1.17 million.

The Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine said that the scientists received the award for their work researching the human immune system. Their research showed how the body regulates its immune responses, and keeps the immune system from attacking itself.

Central to the scientists’ research was understanding more about T-cells, the cells in the body’s immune system that fight infection. The researchers identified so-called regulatory T-cells, which ensure that the body’s normal T-cells don’t start attacking healthy cells.

This is truly incredibly. Every physician in retirement today started medical school with little knowledge about T-cells (and of the entire immune system, may be the easiest to understand):

Their research spans three decades, and began with Dr. Sakaguchi’s experiments with mice in 1995, when he discovered a previously unknown set of immune cells that protected the body against autoimmune diseases.

In 2001, Dr. Brunkow and Dr. Ramsdell discovered gene mutations that lead to autoimmune diseases, and a dysfunction in T-cell responses. Two years later, Dr. Sakaguchi linked their findings to his.

Yet to come:

Stock market, NASDAQ surging!

Need to listen to Paul Tudor Jones interview -- I assume this interview will be re-aired at the CNBC webpage. Paul Tudor Jones, wiki. Feels like 1999: the NASDAQ doubled between the first week in October, 1999, and March 1, 2000. AI prompt: nasdaq in 1999 and 2000.  This week: 13th annual investor conferece: JP MOrgan / Robin Hood. Ground-breaking study. Now NYC's largest poverty fighting foundation. Wiki. When asked about AI, seems incredibly bullish. But circumspect. Does not seem particularly concerned about a bubble due to frothiness.

  • winners: it's an inflation story -- gold, bitcoin. And not just the US, but also globally.
  • losers: crickets

MU: up $10 / share in pre-markets.

IRS: Bessent to remain irs commissioiner indefinitely. Holy mackerel. Never a dull day in the Trump administrator. US Congress shut down. White House not slowing down; showing up to work 24/7.

Paramount: is that accurate?

Yes, the Paramount/Skydance media entity is expected to acquire The Free Press from founder Bari Weiss, who will be installed as editor in chief of CBS News. The deal is reportedly valued around $150 million, with the acquisition intended to expand Paramount's media holdings and install Weiss, a prominent and controversial journalist, at the helm of a major news division.

Stock market, NASDAQ surging! Does this have anything to do with the New England Patriots crushing the Buffalo Bills last night? The Bills were the last undefeated NFL team. Taken out by 2 - 2 Patriots.  Also, sadly for Jim Cramer -- his Philadelphia Eagles take their first loss yesterday -- to the Denver Broncos. Say what? Denver Broncos?

Already CNBC is trying to talk this deal "down."

Chips:

  • MU: up $8
  • NVDA: down $1.65
  • INTC: up 38 cents

Japan:

  • Japan markets surge overnight.
  • big energy story overnight Japan: solar plunges
  • new premier: pivot -- Japan: has made solar energy the center of its energy program; will not pivot to nuclear -- apparently they did the math --- link here --

US solar:

  • speaking of solar: in the US, not only is roof-top solar not projected to increase going forward, analysts project a 12% decline -- a 12% decline -- annually; link here. Maybe I'm misreading this:

Government shutdown: CNBC's Joe Kernen -- the tea leaves suggest this shutdown is going to end sooner than later. It's hard for me to believe that CNBC lets Joe Kernen opine the way he does. Trump spokesman says the GOP wants to end the shutdown: that may be true in the US Senate, and pockets of the US House, but, in fact, the White House loves where the country is at right now.

AMD: while I'm writing this, AMD is now up $57. Same with INTC: up nicely.

Inflation: running at 2.1% now -- GDP deflator. Look how fast this fell. Link here. 1Q25 --> 2Q25 -- rear view mirror -- can't change it -- not projections --

Brand New Phone! For About $70

I have an old iPhone, SE, third generation, released in 2022. The other day I had a minor issue with the iPhone. The local iPhone repairman recommended a new screen protector and a new battery. Around $70. Feels and looks like a brand new phone. I only use my phone for texting and multi-factor authentication, and run-of-the-mill photography needs. That's the problem for Apple: their phones last forever.

So Much For All That Talk About A Bubble

This is why I love x. This story was all over the internet today -- all long paragraphs of prose. Except for x: to the point with a graphic or two. I'm lovin' it. Go to the link (below); it's all about racks and servers.

Next up: Wistron (Taiwan Stock Exchange).

Folks worried about an AI bubble? They're missing the forest for the trees. Quick: name another sector / industry with this rate of growth. Ride the wave. YOLO. FOMO. MOJO.

Cyndi Lauper

Tribute to the Grammy or something to that effect this evening.

Brought back great memories and even a few tears when Cher came on stage.  They're all fighters; they're all survivors; good for them.

This meant a lot to a lot of folks in the audience.

Just wanna have fun.

NFL

I didn't see many games this weekend but of the few I saw, it sure looks like the SNF game, the New England Pariots, 2 - 2, vs the Buffalo Bills, 4 - 0 was second to none.
