DKRW and North American Natural Gas Shortage

September 1, 2010: I have not heard back from DKRW after asking about their outlook for natural gas which is the first thing one sees on their home page:
"The most conservative estimates of North American natural gas supply demonstrate a serious shortfall in production for the foreseeable future. With short supply driving prices higher, we are now seeing some of the highest natural gas prices in the world here in the Southwestern United States and Mexico. With so much of our energy infrastructure and industry tied directly to natural gas, it is necessary to identify and deliver more competitive supply options in order for the US and Mexican economies to grow."
Fact: "we" are swimming in natural gas, more is being found every day, and price of natural gas is at or near historic lows.

March 21, 2010: Update: I have not heard back from DKRW after asking about their outlook for natural gas which is the first thing one sees on their home page:
"The most conservative estimates of North American natural gas supply demonstrate a serious shortfall in production for the foreseeable future. With short supply driving prices higher, we are now seeing some of the highest natural gas prices in the world here in the Southwestern United States and Mexico. With so much of our energy infrastructure and industry tied directly to natural gas, it is necessary to identify and deliver more competitive supply options in order for the US and Mexican economies to grow."
March 16, 2010: I sent my inquiry to DKRW on March 15, 2010. On that same date they acknowledged receipt; to date no response.

Is it just me or do others find this opening statement at their home page by DKRW confusing, or worse?
"The most conservative estimates of North American natural gas supply demonstrate a serious shortfall in production for the foreseeable future. With short supply driving prices higher, we are now seeing some of the highest natural gas prices in the world here in the Southwestern United States ..."
Everything I read suggests just the opposite, specifically: North America is swimming in natural gas; and, the price of natural gas continues to deteriorate.

Just after I posted the above, I came across this link: energy companies moving away from natural gas.

Clear Water Field Update

 News

April 27, 2010: #18961, EOG, Kandiyohi 5-30H, new permit.

April 14, 2020: Perhaps this is a non-story, that EOG is simply going to apply for a new lease with slightly different parameters. But on the other hand, the Clearwater has not been stellar and maybe EOG's cancellation of Clearwater 11-18H, #18597, suggests EOG issues with the Clearwater.

March 21, 2010: The Bakken pool (Bakken/Three Forks Sanish) is the play in Clear Water field, but it should be noted that the field, "owned" by EOG along with some Hess wells, is relatively close to Bottineau County where there is a huge interest in the Spearfish formation.

March 20, 2010: Sidonia Township (T158N-90W) Update; also see comment section at that same link for update on Clear Water Township (T157N-90W update.

Clear Water Field

The Clear Water field is another interesting field due to its location. It is about as far east and as far north in the North Dakota Bakken that has been found to be productive. And, again, it appears that it was EOG who quietly but aggressively went into the area signing a huge number of leases in late 2009. I was so surprised how quickly and aggressively EOG moved into this area, that I put most of these wells on my "Wells to Watch" list. For that same reason, I posted a pretty good summary of what was going on in the Sidonia Township (Clear Water field) on February 21, 2010.

To date, based on IPs, the wells have not been exciting. Certainly these IPs, in the 400 bbl range, are nothing compared to the EOG wells in the Parshall, where 1,000 bbl-IPs were the norm.

The Clear Water field is also referred to as the "Corridor 50" because ND State Highway 50 runs east-west through the northern boundary of the field.  The Clear Water is immediately north of the small town of Palermo (although Palermo itself is inside the Ross oil field).

The Clear Water is a relatively small field, composed of two townships, and about half of a third township. The townships, south to north are: Clearwater (157-90); Sidonia (158-90); Kandiyohi (159-90). In addition, there are eleven and twelve sections respectively in 157-89, and 158-89.

After getting those permits and signing those leases, EOG has quickly moved into the Clear Water. Two new wells are almost complete -- the big rigs have been moved off -- and there are currently five rigs on site inside the Clear Water (March 15 ,2010), as well as a sixth rig, a wildcat, just on the north edge of the Clear Water field (20-159-90).

There are about 27 new permits. There are ten (10) producing wells, two of those are long laterals, and eight are short laterals. With a few exceptions, there is a permit/well in every section of the Clear Water. The exceptions are in the far north and the east.

Something else to put into perspective: EOG's activity in the Clear Water field is 25 miles directly south of their (EOG) Bottineau wells and their (EOG) wells in southwest Manitoba where EOG is going horizontally into the Spearfish formation.

Going forward, the Bakken Shale Discussion Group might follow this activity at this thread.

Dakota Candles and Orion Belts

Update

December 24, 2011: I no longer use these phrases ("Dakota candles" and Orion belts").  I used these phrases initially to point out the multi-well pads, but multi-well pads are now becoming so common that pointing them out is no longer necessary.

By the way, unrelated, but could be confusing: when a horizontal is laid down running directly west-to-east, it is called a "laydown."  If the horizontal runs directly south-to-north, it is called a "stand-up." Many of the Bakken wells are on a "slant" -- I don't know if there is a colloquial name for such horizontals.

Original Post

We're seeing more and more "Dakota Candles" and "Orion  Belts" in the Bakken. Dakota Candles and Orion Belts refer to multiple-well sites. Some of these are CLR Eco-Pads (4 x 1 or 4 x 2); some are Hess 3 x 2 wells at one location; and I think I recall other producers doing something similar.

I consider a group of wells "Dakota Candles" or "Orion Belts" only if they are on the same pad, or the same site by legal description, and appear to be "related" to each other in some particular way.

For an example of an "Orion Belt," go to the GIS map server at the NDIC home page: click on "Find Well" on the left sidebar; type in "Hegler"; scroll down to "Hegler 1-13H" and click on it, and then zoom in on the Hegler 1-13H. (To zoom in: click on "Zoom In" on the left side bar and then draw a square around the area of interest with your mouse.)

Note the "Orion Belt" of  the four CLR wells in section 12 of T146N-97W, all four are confidential as of August 30, 2010, most likely all four are drilled:
18515 -- CLR, Hegler 1-13T, first of the four to be reported (August 30, 2010)
18513 -- CLR, Arthur 1-12T
18747 -- CLR, Hegler 2-13H, new permit, 23 Feb 10
18748 -- CLR, Arthur 2-12H, new permit, 23 Feb 10; rig was on site; now off
From east to west, the distance between the outside wells is 105 feet. From the nomenclature, one can see that two of these wells will be going south into section 13, and two wells will be going north into section 12. Two of the wells (Hegler 1-13T and Arthur 1-12T) will be targeting the TFS; the other two will be targeting the Middle Bakken. (It is interesting that the NDIC GIS map server does not use the "T" designation, but that is how the NDIC daily activity report reported it.

I call this configuration an "Orion Belt" for obvious reasons.

Hess has six permits aligned north-to-south in the Ross field. Since these permits are "upright" in orientation, I call them "Dakota Candles." If the rig on the far end (either north, or south) flares by itself, the series will certainly look like a lit candle from the air. Smile. Here are the specifics of the "Dakota Candle" in Ross Field:
18602, RS-Nelson Farms A-156-90-2829H-1
18603, RS-Shuhart 156-90-2726H-1
18604, RS-Nelson Farms A-156-90-2829H-2
18605, RS-Shuhart 156-90-2726H-2
18606, RS-Nelson Farms A-156-90-2829H-3
18607, RS-Shuhart 156-90-2726H-3
The distance from end-to-end of this "Dakota Candles" is 264 feet. For detailed explanation of these six wells go to the Ross Field Update.

I've written about CLR's first Eco-Pad elsewhere:
18544, Kennedy 2-31T is the farthest east of the four.
18543, Kennedy 1-31M is second from the west.
18541, Miles 1-6M is farthest to the west.
18542, Miles 2-6T is second from the east.
Another "Orion Belt." This one is owned by Hess. These will be three long laterals, all starting in section 30-155-93 and going north into section 19. Three formations (MB, UTF, or LTF) or is one of these a monitoring well?
18838, EN-Abrahamson-155-93-3019H-1
18839, EN-Abrahamson-155-93-3019H-2
18840, EN-Abrahamson-155-93-3019H-3
Another CLR Eco-Pad (Dolphin field, north of Tioga), April, 2010:
18934, Raymo 2-30H, SESE 19-161N-95W
18935, Glasoe 3-19H, SESE 19-161N-95W

Cabernet Field Update

November 22, 2014: all permits from beginning of calendar year 2012 to November 22, 2014, were updated. See "Permits" below. Cumulative production for all other wells also updated; see below, in this section of "Updates."

February 7, 2012: a relatively nice OXY USA Cabernet well, the Matthew Schmidt.

August 6, 2011: see also a bit of trivia on the Cabernet.

August 6, 2011: IPs and cumulative production numbers updated for wells below (dated March 9, 2011). Here are a couple of them with high cumulatives:

March 9, 2011: After a flurry of activity a couple of years ago, this field has been relatively quiet. A couple of new permits in past year. The field is "owned" by Anschutz (now OXY USA), although CLR and Slawson each have an operated well. There is one short lateral, but all the rest are long laterals. Going somewhat north to south; test date (month/year):
  • 20147, 378, Slawson, Dagger 1-10H; s3/11; t10/11; cum 36K 9/14; (problems?)

Cabernet Field
Accurate As Of Date Of Original Post
Generally, This Section Not Updated

If it weren't for the fact that Anschutz has caught my interest and the fact that Anschutz has had some good wells I would not have gotten too excited about the Cabernet field.

The Cabernet field is a small field, only 21 sections, mostly in township T144N-97W. It is in Dunn County, about 20 miles due north of Dickinson, or about 20 miles southwest of Killdeer, which is well southwest of the reservation. It is nestled in between three other fields that are more active and have had some good wells: the Little Knife to the northwest; Murphy Creek to the northeast; and, the Fayette, to the southeast. Anschutz is also very active in the Fayette. It appears that the Cabernet and the Fayette fields are "owned" by Anschutz.

Right now there are only six file numbers from the current boom inside the Cabernet, including Anschutz's short lateral, #17899: the Stroh 11-1H well had an IP of 1,191 which was reported January, 2010. The rig that was on site #18644, State 1-25-36H-144-97X, has now moved and is now drilling #18427, Matthew Schmidt 1-35-2H-143-97.

There are four (4) other file numbers, all on the confidential list, in the Cabernet: #18343, #18427, #18359, and #18360.  Three of the wells (are on the same site, #18644, #18359, and #18360: State 1-25-36H-144-97X; Kary 1-24-13H-144-97; and, State 1-25-36H-144-97.  These three wells are only two miles north of the Stroh 11-1H. We will soon get to see if the Stroh was an outlier or if the Cabernet is a great field, albeit very small.

As with most other fields in North Dakota, there are no hamlets, villages, or towns; just beautiful scenery, enjoyed by pronghorn and pheasants.

Focus on Anschutz in Dunn County

Updates

November 26, 2016: some data updated; nothing remarkable; Anschutz wells acquired by OXY USA, and then acquired by Lime Rock Resources

February 14, 2013: some data updated, through #19206 below.

Original Post

A few weeks ago, the Anschutz story attracted my attention, and I posted a fairly lengthy note regarding Anschutz. It appears most, if not all, of the acreage controlled by Anschutz is in Dunn County.
