Compute: a new asset class. What an exciting time to be alive!
- timeline
- Jensen Huang introduced the asset without knowing it.
- Larry Ellison appeared to have stumbled into it.
- Becky Quick asked the question -- August 2026.
- Everyone now talking about it today.
- "Compute" is a new financial asset class.
- other financial asset classes:
- equities
- bonds
- real estate
- gold
- oil
- crypto (bitcoin, others
- compute
Think of it this way:
- the price of oil (WTI, Brent) great affects 100's (maybe 1,000s) of other companies (and the general economy
- the quarterly earnings of NVDA will affect 100's of other companies, and the general economy
- some say Jensen Huang / Nvidia is the Federal chief of AI
However:
The problem with this being a financial asset class. By definition, a financial asset class should be enduring. I doubt anyone considers "compute" being an asset class for ten years. In addition, it seems "compute" is only a "thing" as long as there is a significant shortage. More likely, "compute" would make more sense as the 12th official sector within the Global Industry Classification Standard. The problem with that, are there enough companies that could be pigeon-holed inside "compute"? More likely, "compute" could simply become a metric within financial statements.

- big announcement coming September 9, 2026
- up nicely today but well off it's recent highs
