For high school students new to Shakespeare:

• from middle school to high school: read as much of the Shakespeare plays as possible; use wiki liberally to fill in the history and the settings of the plays as needed; don't become discouraged if difficult to read, or even boring; start with the four, five, or six most famous Shakespearean plays; that may be enough
• during the summer between one's sophomore year and junior year, read Brenda James' The Truth Will Out;
• finally, read Richard Paul Roe's book -- probably one of the best "beach books" one can read, or take it with you on your summer trip to Italy before going to college.
