This is pretty cool:
- cutting down entire forests, turning that wood into wood pellets to burn, to make electricity raises the GDP substantially; leaving the forest alone, letting it grow, does nothing for GDP.
- surgeons across the United States performing bypass surgeries every day, raises the GDP substantially; preventing heart disease in the first place by health living does nothing for GDP (generally speaking).
So, there's that.
The new book: Growth: A History and a Reckoning, David Susskind, c. 2024.
A world without growth -- at least measured by GDP -- is difficult for modern people to comprehend.
