Commentary:

When I look at the charts below and the US equity market in the past two months, these thoughts cross my mind:

  • no Fed rate cut -- and yet, the market keeps moving higher (at least some sectors)
    • some think as many as three cuts yet this year
    • some think one cut this year
    • some even think of a rate rise before the year is out
  • the Fed
    • some think JPow's recent comments have been  hawkish
    • some think JPow's recent comments have been dovish
    • for me, it's clear where JPow stands
  • inflation -- the way the "big boys" measure inflation, inflation remains sticky
    • "inflation remains sticky" has become a meme; it's completely inaccurate
  • inflation: is it due to --
    • typical business cycle?
    • supply chain issues?
    • fiscal / monetary policy?
  • my favorite chart: assets in MMFs have decreased month-over-month for the two most recent consecutive months; where is that money going; only two spots
    • retail spending
    • investing
    • what else is there?
  • AI revolution: real or hyped?
  • earnings have surprised almost everyone
    • earnings grew into P/Es
  • Goldilocks economy: investors / savers both benefiting
  • Presidential election year
  • price of oil / gasoline
    • some think the world is awash in oil
    • others think the SPR drawdown is a real concern
    • I know longer care about the SPR, but it doesn't matter; it's all MOJO
  • demographics: intergenerational transfer of wealth
    • my favorite data point
    • it's all about RMDs, from tax-deferred retirement accounts to market in general
