A reader wrote that he was interested in the Ron Viall wells in the Wheelock field northeast of Williston. The reader wrote:

I see Hess is becoming more active drilling in the Bakken. I am curious as to what plans Crescent and Hess have with this spacing unit. Crescent must have won the dispute hearing with Hess because they [Crescent] pulled 4 permits on 156-98-25 which is leased by Hess.  

Several comments:

• Hess has become much more active over the past several years and Hess is reporting very, very good wells;
• I've not followed Crescent closely enough to know for sure, but it's my anecdotal impression, Hess is getting better wells than Crescent but I could be very wrong;
• the wells/permits are still confidential, but everything I see suggests Crescent will be drilling standard Bakken two-mile, 1280-acre horizontals, to the south, completely within Wheelock; whereas,
• Hess will be drilling three-mile, 1920-acre horizontals, to the north, also completely within Wheelock;
• the graphics:
  
• the NDIC map shows the 1280-acre spacing unit and the overlapping 1920-acre spacing unit;
• the Hess well names include "2513" which indicates sections 25, 24, 13, drilling to the north;
• the two Hess wells PNC'd were "2524" which would have been sections 25 and 24
• I haven't paid attention to Crescent naming schemes so I can't comment but nothing suggests anything other than two-section spacing/drilling for these Crescent wells;
• I didn't listen to the hearing so I don't know why NDIC granted the permits to Crescent rather than Hess, but I can guess. I've seen this before. 
• hopefully a reader will comment, adding more granularity and correcting me where I'm wrong.
