Two Wells Coming Off Confidential List -- November 12, 2021

California gasoline prices: highest in history: link to Julianne Geiger. And it could get a whole lot worse.

Some thoughts on banning US oil exports: from social media.

France? I thought the country was energy independent with all its nuclear energy. Now we see this: Cheniere to supply LNG from Texas under new deal with France's Engie.

Crude oil is back ... and it isn't going anywhere. Link to Tsvetana Paraskova.

RBN Energy: greater EV adoption creates a disruptive predicament for US power grid. Archived.

Electric vehicles sit front and center in the effort to decarbonize passenger transportation, a movement that helped make Tesla’s Elon Musk the richest man in the world. Pair this with heavy attention to EVs from the broader car-and-truck market and the White House’s goal of 50% EV sales by 2030 and it makes you wonder how EVs will impact the energy and power-generation sectors. We’ve all seen how power grids can be overwhelmed during periods of extreme heat or cold, by relying too heavily on intermittent renewables like wind and solar, or — as many Texans saw last February — by interruptions in natural gas deliveries to gas-fired power plants. What might happen when we add tens of millions of power-hungry EVs to the mix? In today’s RBN blog, we discuss the impacts that scaling electric vehicles may have on energy and power markets and the power grid.

The push for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) — a subset of electric vehicles that includes all-electric, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) such as the Tesla Model S and the Chevy Bolt, and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) such as the Honda Clarity and the Ford Escape PHEV — will disrupt current driving and power consumption norms and has the potential to have major market impacts. An early market worry ties to infrastructure needs, which are proving to be one of the biggest hurdles in the switch from internal combustion engines to EVs.

Notes From All Over -- November 12, 2021

Weather: no hurricanes? Global warming. Lots of hurricanes? Global warming. I thought this season was very, very mild. Link here. For the first time on record -- since 1950 -- the globe -- the entire world -- has had NO major hurricane / typhoon formations from September 26, 2021, to November 10, 2021.

Notes From All Over -- The Celebrity Edition -- November 12, 2021

Alex Gorsky: twice in just a few days, the CEO of JNJ is in the news. A few days ago, it was announced that Gorsky joined Apple, Inc.'s board of directors; and now, this morning, JNJ is surging after announcing that JNJ will split into two companies.

JNJ, continued: I was disappointed that one of the main reasons for this split was not discussed.

Taylor Swift: trending now that it's being reported that she is re-recording her albums.

Gene Simmons: trending.

Jack Frost: trending. Here is the latest. And from November 11, 2021, over North Dakota. Time to get out the Carhartt jackets.

Hardest-working states in American: link here. From a reader, thank you. Perhaps a stand-alone post later. Spoiler alert: Alaska and North Dakota have traded the number one spot back and forth over the years. The lede:

Americans are hard workers, putting in an average of 1,767 hours per year as of 2021, according to the World Economic Forum. That’s 435 hours per year more than Germans work, but 357 fewer than Mexicans do. Comment: I was surprised to see Germany mentioned in the lede; I would have expected England.

Dithering: Brandon's SecEnergy laughs when asked about the high price of gasoline. She says she does not understand why $80-oil does not incentivize oil companies to drill for oil. This is one of the reasons, though minor, but it highlights how the Brandon administration will do what it takes to hurt the domestic oil sector. The sword of Damocles.

OPEC: why some folks think OPEC is not increasing production quotas. Link here.

Strikes: not looking good for John Deere and Kellogg employees. Time to get with the program.  The John Deere strike began on October 14, 2021. The Kellogg strike has gone on even longer; it began October 5, 2021. This speaks volumes about the stories we aren't being told about supply chain shortages and the labor market.

Notes From All Over -- Let's See The Graphics -- November 9, 2021

Here's the headline and the link: Covid-19 hospitalizations rising in parts of California, a potentially ominous sign. What regions specifically? The Inland Empire and the Central Valley.

First question? Rate of immunizations. As expected. Provides the reason for increasing hospitalizations in these regions. We saw the same thing in Colorado.

Graphs here. Move along, nothing to see here.

Apple, Inc. Wow. Alex Gorsky, CEO of JNJ has just joined the Apple board of directors. Think about it.
