Wealthy Americans Are Never Satisfied -- If Media Is To Be Believed -- October 7, 2023

Locator: 45680B.

For now, I'm not going to provide the background or explain further, but talking with my wife tonight, who we frequently call "Debbie Downer," I was reminded again, how "spoiled" Americans with net worth in the top 10% of the country are. Wow, lousy grammar but you get the picture.

Americans with a net worth in the top 10% are incredibly "spoiled." They know not how good they have it, or if they do know how good they have it, are not satisfied with what they have. Again, this has nothing to do with readers of the blog; this was my thought after my wife talked about some news articles today.

NASCAR - Junior Varsity

Status: stage 2, with ten to go.

This is why NASCAR is dying. We've talked about this before. We have Hulu. It took a special effort to find the race, being aired on NBC. Hulu has to know that I love racing. As soon as I went to "home," Hulu needed to load the race (streaming) as the default option. But no, I had to go through a dozen colelge football games and B-movies before I was able to ffnd NASCAR.

Charlotte. We're in the playoffs -- four will be eliminated today, going from group of 12 to group of 8 and yet the stands are relatively empty. This is the one sport where participants outnumber folks in the stands. The big question: do number of folks in the infield outnumber the folks in the stands?

As for the race, on the bubble, #8, Creed, up 5 points. Hemric, driver of car #10, is five points behind the opportunity to advance.

Texas: 30 and sad face.

Speaking of which, I'm halfway there:

  • "seasonal flu" shot yesterday
  • Covid-19-2023 two weeks
  • RSV: in two weeks
  • tetanus: in one month

"Seasonal flu": I did did not realize this -- for seniors, the "seasonal flu" vaccine is 4x that given younger folks.

  • not universally available;
  • our pharmacy had it;
  • not only was it "free" (Medicare, Tricare) but we got a coupon for  10% off the next entire purchase at the supermarket (up to $100);
  • day later: still alive; no side effects;
  • and, no flu. It must be working.

It will be fascinating to see the results of a controlled, double-blind study.

A monoclonal antibody. OMG. Is this safe?

The big question: is the "science" a bridge too far for the GOP?

mRNA

In perspective:

  • late 1700s (specifically 1796): first vaccine; cowpox;
    • considered by reputable scientists at the time to be fake science;
  • late 1920s, penicillin, bacterial infections defeated (and prevented):
    • scarlet fever, puerperal fever, both with high mortality rates
    • scarlet fever: major global epidemics in the 17th and 18th century; high mortality rates
    • puerperal fever: #1 cause of death related to childbirth;
      • cause of death considered by reputable physicians to be fake science;
      • physicians resisted hand-washing between patients to stop disease; thought it fake science;
      • sort of like masks and distancing in other epidemics
  • late 1980s (specifically, 1975 / 1986, monoclonal antibody research / licensing
    • completely missed by the general population
    • today: the medications most advertised during network news: monoclonal antibodies;
  • early 2000s, mRNA, broad infection and cancer research;
    • mRNA research / early vaccine develoopment: considered by reputable airheads to be fake science
  • late 2030s, 99% of all Americans will have been treated or vaccinated with at least one mRNA-derived medication, including 99.99% folks who swear that mRNA is the work of the devil
    • pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, small cell lung cancer, and Paget's disease will all be cured / prevented / mitigated / targeted by mRNA vaccines / medications
