Twenty Permits Renewed -- WSJ Schooled / Played — Can’t Wait To See How The WSJ Reports This Tomorrow — Twitter Already On Top Of This Story — November 21, 2022

Peter Zeihan, on Nord Stream:

Saudi oil production increase: [later — turns out WSJ article was a “hoax.” More tomorrow. Heading to bed. LOL. Saudi first.]

  • link here to The WSJ -- for the archives; I have no interest in the article
  • does anyone really know what the increase will be?
    • the article says 500,000 bopd for all of OPEC -- and it's just talk
    • on the agenda for the December 4, 2022, meeting
    • last month it was a cut of 2 million bopd
    • so, the numbers are all background noise
  • with regard to sovereign immunity for MBS, The WSJ has it exactly right
    • in general, "we" don't "target" heads of state
    • Libya's Gaddafi was a one-off, and that issue was much, much different, and even so, many European nations did not support US action at that time;
    • we don't need rogue nations suing / targeting US presidents
  • bottom line: this entire story is much ado about nothing to coin a phrase

OPEC production, historical, most recent data:

  • 500,000 / 30 million = 1.7%
  • one year:

  • three years:

US refining capacity: this will be a fascinating story to watch over the next three decades; is the US ceding refining capacity to China? Looking thirty years out; link to Robert Rapier via oilprice.

  • The U.S. energy policy is clear about its intention to phase out fossil fuels.
  • This has forced refiners to exercise caution in order to stay afloat.
  • It has also resulted in a loss of U.S. refining capacity.

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), at the beginning of the pandemic U.S. refiners had 19.0 million barrels per day (BPD) of operable refining capacity. This was the highest number ever reported by the EIA.

By December 2021, that number had fallen to 17.9 million BPD — a loss of 1.1 million BPD of capacity in less than two years.

1.1 / 19 = 5.6%.

Another Good-News Story For Grapevine, Texas -- November 21, 2022

Harbor Freight coming to Grapevine!

I'm Trolling -- Do Not Take Out Of Context -- November 21, 2022

Locator: 33221C.

This is what the 65+ seniors (i.e., voters) see:

  • Biden: a jump in social security benefits by almost 10% in two months. Whoo-hoo!
  • GOP (McCarthy): maintains pledge to remove Omar Ilhan from foreign affairs committee. Whoo-hoo!

Link here.

Link here.

From my perspective: why didn't Kevin McCarthy post a 10-point plan to help middle class Americans as soon as the midterm elections were over?

He's had two years to prepare.

What has he been doing for the past two years; he's had a lot of spare time to work on that list.

He appears to be unable to think "big" (strategically).

A ten-point list?

  • bring interest rates down; bring mortgage rates down (it's going to happen anyway; might as well take credit)
  • college tuition assistance plan; tweak the Biden tuition-debt cancellation initiative
  • a green-energy program that makes sense
    • ex: Daimler EVs and state of California partnership
  • Americans' right(s) to basic utilities (electricity, water, internet)
    • ex: everyone gets $200 tax credit  -- credit -- for utilities to include free basic internet -- tax credit must be spent on utilities, internet
  • military funding overhaul
  • immigration overhaul with emphasis on embracing the "southern surge";
    • streamline, expedite citizenship-path process from current ten years (or longer) to max of three years with aggressive requirements (language, job history, job skills)
    • Abbott lost four of the five big cities in Texas; and, almost lost all five
    • Beto easily won the border counties
    • Abbott is on the "wrong" side of history
    • Beto was simply "a bridge too far" for 45% of Texans
  • recreational drug policy: align federal law with state laws;
    • let private enterprise manage recreational drug use;
  • screw China (he probably needs to use a different "word")
  • go full Monty on an EV charging network on the US interstate system
  • photo-ops in California, Florida, Texas, New York City, Chicago, and Detroit
  • move toward a four-day workweek for federal bureaucracy
    • focus on productivity, not hours in office

Disney -- November 21, 2022

Investors.

Streaming: link here. Streaming wars.

Disney:

Hulu vs YouTube.

#1 vs #2 ... or ... #2 vs #1.

DIS has three components: the parks, content, and streaming.

Let's see what Iger does with streaming.

Hopefully Iger will see the "Florida story" as a distraction.

Regardless, I'm not an investor in DIS.

Bob Iger returning to DIS is not a "Steve Jobs returning to AAPL" story.

Wow -- Daimler -- November 21, 2022

Link here.

Daimler -- Freightliner -- Western Star -- tag.

We've discussed this often on the blog.

An open book test.

I've changed my "new-money allocation" plan, 30-year horizon.

Was:

  • Buffett, blue-chip: 40%
  • tech infrastructure (mostly chips): 30%
  • energy (mostly oil): 20%
  • mRNNA: 10%

New:

  • Buffett, blue-chip: 30%
  • tech infrastructure (mostly chips): 30%
  • energy (mostly oil): 20%
  • mRNA: 10%
  • Daimler: 10% (might be considered part of Buffett, blue-chip)

For The Archives
Daimler

The various ticker symbols are confusing.

I had been accumulating shares in Daimler for decades before the truck division spin-off.

I don't remember the specifics but after the spin-off, all my Daimler holdings were exchanged for "Daimler truck group holding," ticker symbol: DTRHF.

Most recently, I've been accumulating DTRUY.

From page 28 of the 2021 Annual Report:

Schwab generally charges no commission fees but because DTRUY is "OTC," Schwab charges a fee. My most recent trade included a commission of $6.95.
