Wells Coming Off Confidential List This Next Week -- March 11, 202

I came out to the pool at 2:00 p.m. today or thereabouts. It's now 5:54 p.m. CT, and it looks like I will be out here until 8:00 p.m. or maybe 9:00 p.m. It's been a bit breezy but the sun has been so hot / bright, I had to move in under the pool's pavilion, set on an "island" surrounded by the pool. 

It's 85°F right now -- the high was 88°F -- I think the forecast was for 86°. A few brave folks got into the pool. The water is still a bit cool. The rest of the week: temperatures will come down significantly, but I will enjoy the pool as long as I can.

Sports

Our granddaughter, Olivia, is a high school junior. She has been playiing soccer since she was five years old, starting while living in a Boston, Massachusetts, suburb. Her five-year-old mentor, Kiki, had started playing soccer when she was four years old.

Olivia now plays for her high school soccer team AND a  Dallas club team.  

Olivia is one of three captains for her high school soccer team. No one can recall the last tine a junior was named a captain of the team. Historically, those spots are reserved for seniors.

After last night's win, her high school team, the Grapevine High School Lady Mustangs won their sixteen consecutive district championshiip. 

Now, on to Regionals, where if history is any guide, they will take first or second place and advance to "State." If history is any guide, they will take second place at State. 

I can't speak for high school coaches but one would be surprised to hear how much college coaches are paid here in Texas. They take their sports very seriously here. 

Boys football: a high school coach was recruited to coach at a local college. Salary: $1 million dollar. He has been at that college for about five years. A nationally ranked college in north Texas is now recruiting him for their program, offering a salary in the range of $5 million. He has said he won't accept that position; he has too much allegiance to his current school ... but the college will have to increase his salary to make it somewhat more competitive with that other offer. One-million-plus dollars for coaching college football. Okay.

Oscars tomorrow night.

There are some who are aghast / confused / dumbfounded that Jamie Lee Curtis is nominated for an Oscar for five minutes on screen. My wife mentioned that. 

If anyone "knows" Hollywood and "knows" Jamie Lee Curtis, they will know why she was nominated. I can't imagine her winning but ...

... wow, what a wonderful country.

For The Archives -- For The Grandchildren -- March 11, 2023

While stationed in Europe for thirteen years (my wife says fourteen years, LOL), these were the two primary aircraft to which I was assigned: the F-15D and the F-111F. 

I flew on not less than a dozen US Army, US Air Force, and civilian aircraft during those years including a/c very few aviators ever had the privilege of flying.

The best years of my life, 1983 - 1997.

 I don't recall how I was lucky enough to get the F-111 photograph. 

One regret: not buying a hundred more photos at the time, taken by Diane Huey, but I was strapped for cash in those days. Her photos were better than any photograph taken by USAF public affairs photographers. She challenged the pilots to get her a/c in a unique position for a unique photo. And, of course, the pilots loved the challenge. Diane was a most remarkable flight surgeon, one year senior to me. I learned a lot from her. Mostly how to get the most out of a bare-base assignment. She was married to an F-15 pilot, who was the "original" Kris Kristofferson in the F-15 community. Her car in Germany: a "baby Mercedes." Wow, those were the days.
