RBN Energy: US oil deals have Venezuela poised for long-term growth, but it's far from certain. Link here. Archived.

Venezuela’s oil industry spent more than a decade moving in the wrong direction, with crude production, exports and refinery operations falling far below their former levels. But 2026 has brought a notable change. Production has begun to recover, exports have risen and even refinery throughput has moved slightly higher. A sweeping new agreement with the U.S. could accelerate investment and development across the country’s upstream oil sector, although that outcome is far from certain. In today’s RBN blog, we look at the recent improvements in Venezuelan crude oil production and exports in light of its deal with the U.S., and although that deal does not involve refining, we will also address the prospects there.

Under the first-of-its-kind agreement announced in late August, Venezuela agreed to grant 100-year concessions for 17 oil fields with proven reserves of approximately 65 billion barrels to North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP), the country’s second-largest private oil producer. NABEP, which said it expects to spend nearly $100 billion on new infrastructure in Venezuela, granted the U.S. a 35% equity stake in its corporate parent and also gave the U.S. the right to purchase, at production cost, 20% of the offtake from all current and future fields NABEP will operate, according to a White House fact sheet published August 31. The U.S. also has the right of first refusal to purchase the remaining 80% of its production, per the fact sheet. The deal greatly expands U.S. control of Venezuela’s energy sector.

We should note at the top that there are a seemingly endless number of questions about the practical and legal concerns around the highly unusual deal. Can the U.S. government legally take a majority stake in a foreign joint venture? How politically durable will the agreement be in the U.S. and Venezuela? Will it encourage other oil and gas companies to invest in Venezuela? Those, and others, are thorny questions and we’re not going to attempt to answer them here. Our focus today is what the deal, and a separate announcement by Chevron (more on that below), could mean for Venezuela’s oil sector going forward given the changes already seen this year.

Venezuela’s oil industry has been in long-term decline, but its massive reserves alone provide hope for a lasting turnaround. Venezuela reported in 2023 that it has 303 billion barrels of proved reserves (far-left bar in Figure 1 below) — roughly equal to 17% of the global total and the highest of any country. The announced deal with the NABEP would give the U.S. access to 65 billion barrels (green bar segment at far left; about 21% of the total) but would not include the other 248 billion barrels (orange bar segment). The U.S. has about 74 billion barrels of proved reserves (red bar segment), ranking #9 globally.

    What a forgiving / wonderful nation: Clancy could be pardoned. From a charge of first-degree murder killing her three children to a presidential pardon. What a wonderful country.  A snippet: one juror blames the lawyers for a poor presentation. Wow.

    Stryker: when I see Stryker down 20% for the year, it tells me one thing: my instincts are right on target. See disclaimer.

    Iran:

    RGC Navy has issued an "urgent warning" ordering all tanker crews at Kuwaiti & Bahraini piers & anchorages to immediately evacuate their vessels. IRGC said Kuwait & Bahrain are both hosts & complicit to US actions & warned that tankers in these locations will be targeted.
    It's well past the time that the US Navy / USAF take out Kharg Island. The US Navy needs to tell Iranians on Kharg island they need to evacuate now.
    The US Navy took out five (5) Iranian oil tankers today. That's a start.

    Tesla: a new car off the assemble line every ten (10) seconds.

    WTI: went over $94 briefly; dropped back to $93.97.

    It appears the Mideast states might want to be a bit more helpful -- this is now an existential issue for many of them:

    • first, the overnight attacks on a Saudi refinery, killing 73+; and now,
    • this:

    • and, now, all grades of oil trending near $100 / bbl.

    Copper:

    Canada: I don't follow the logic here at all -- it takes two to tango -- so, you increase tariffs on your biggest trading partner which will increase how much your population pays for these things, and then you tell me this will help you population. Okay.

    Enbridge: Michelle Harradence to be next CEO. It is "estimated" that she is 56 or 57 years old.

    DEI ... dead:

    An American Bar Association council voted today to kill a DEI rule for law schools in a bid to protect its accreditation powers, delivering a final blow to a mandate that’s been under increased scrutiny.
    The rule known as Standard 206 had required law schools to show “concrete” action toward gender- and race-based diversity and inclusion for students, faculty, and staff. The repeal, effective immediately, precedes a planned meeting between ABA officials and the US Department of Education over reauthorizing the organization’s longstanding law school accreditation power.
    Dot-Com high-low: During the dot-com crash, the S&P 500 hit its all-time high on March 24, 2000, and finally reached its ultimate low on October 9, 2002, before turning back around.

    The Miami crash: too fast, too high, too short. Plus unknown to the pilots, a significant tailwind. Link here. Egregious poor decision making -- negligence --will the weather (the tailwind) bail them out? Unlikely. Too fast, too high, too short.

    Crash and burn: Lonnie Bunch III resigns as head of the Smithsonian. Very, very impressive resume but clearly ....

    CVX / Venezueala: Chevron to double the number of rigs it operates in Venezuela.

    Cramer's first hour: the stories today -- tech and energy.

    Dow is down almost one percent; I assume the portfolios of the readers of this blog are "up" so far for the day, see disclaimer:

    • CVX: up $4.17; $213, closing in on 52-week high
    • MPC: up almost $9 in early morning trading; also closing in on 52-week high;
    • PSX: up almost $5 in early morning trading; $213, less than a dollar from the 52-week high;
    • COP: up $2.40 in early morning trading, less than a dollar from the 52-week high;

    All this is very, very transitory.

    • GLW: up $10 today; back to $165, but well off its 52-week high of $270

    AAPL -- Apple

    Apple's iFold (the foldable iPhone): Here we go. Will be announced tomorrow.

    Initially the iFold will be for the rich only -- it will initially be in short supply -- at $2,000 will fly off the shelf -- but only for the ultra-rich. I'm sure Apple's internal polling has this sorted out. Wait until the carriers (Verizon, T-Mobile, ATT) have to subsidize the iFold to compete. Verizon is the primary major nationwide cellular network operator in the United States alongside AT&T and T-Mobile.

    The high price will "protect" the supply chain and deliver incredible revenue numbers, if not necessarily earnings/profits. In addition, the $2000-iFold will make the other Apple smart phones seem very, very, very affordable, especially with the carrier subsidies.

    The iPhone was introduced in June, 2007, at $500. That $500 converts to $800, taking inflation into account, in 2026.

    Qualcomm to build chips for AWS.

    Qualcomm partners with Amazon to build next-gen AI data center infrastructure.

    Qualcomm: pivoting from smart phones to data centers.

    Amazon / Qualcomm has not announced a physical location for this new center. Hard to say whether Amazon/Qualcomm is looking to announce a "new" AI center or simply mean that Amazon will use Qualcomm chips for all its AI data centers. Qualcomm and MRVL appear to be the "contest" CNBC is following.

    Newest buzzword / metric: "compute / watt."
