Round Prairie -- Very Active -- Bakken, North Dakota, USA

August 15, 2013:
Round Prairie is about a 20-section oil field west of Williston, right on the Montana state line. It is all prairie. It looks like the field is owned by EOG. The wells are mediocre but they were probably completed before EOG started using newer completion techniques. They should all hit 100,000 bbls in three or four years (some already have); some might take a bit longer. But they should all pay for themselves, and are all good enough to ensure more drilling in this area.  With the exception of one well, they are all producing between 1,000 and 6,000 bbls/month.

I think these are all middle Bakken, and Three Forks might be better in this area.

February 26, 2013: all but two sections are now held by production. All horizontals are long horizontals, except for two short laterals. There are no rigs in the field at this time.

February 26, 2013: Nick H over at Teegue's Bakken Shale Discussion Group has noted that EOG has a great Short Prairie well:

The Round Prairie oil field is very, very active right now: four rigs on site in this small field, about 20 sections. It is "owned" by EOG. The field is directly west of Williston, North Dakota, and abuts the Montana border. In fact, the sections along the border are only about half the size of a "normal" section.

There are currently four rigs on site:

    We have minerals located in a section in Williams County next to Montana which is smaller than a regular section. I talked with the NDIC and was told this would be a 640 spacing unit.

    It looks like the spacing will vary in these smaller sections.

    According to the NDIC GIS map server, the smaller sections along the Montana border will be "combined" with the abutting 640-acre sections in some fields (including Round Prairie) to give 960-acre spacing. That may not be true in other areas.

    The following sections are shown as 960-acre spacing on the GIS map server.

    Hebron field (note the orientation of the spacing units):

    Sections 11-14
    Sections 22-27
    Sections 27-26
    Sections 34-35

    Rounded Prairie field (note the orientation of the spacing units):
    Sections 2-3
    Sections 10-11
    Sections 14-15
    Sections 22-23

    Sections 2-3

    Interestingly, farther south, some of the "smaller" sections are not designated yet on the GIS map server as to spacing size.

    Bruce:
    The "Strandahl" field is where our minerals are located (Section 31). I think G-3 Op. has this area temp. spaced. Is this a 640 or 960 acre spacing unit?

    Yes, all those "half-sections" along the Montana border are 640-acre spacing by combining two sections into one for spacing.

    So, in the Strandahl field, the following sections are combined into one 640-acre spacing unit:
    Sections 6-7
    Sections 18-19
    Sections 30-31

    And that is true for other sections north and south of this field along the Montana border.

    The Strandahl field is about eight miles north of the Hebron field on the far west (along the Montana border). The Strandahl field is 36 sections (of course, the six sections on the west are "half-sections") and has one producing well and one well on the confidential list.

    Oh, I forgot, I should have added. This information can be found on the NDIC GIS map server.

    When you get to the map, go to the legend on the sidebar to the right of the map, and expand the "Drilling and Spacing" file, and by checking the spacing under the "Bakken" one can find the spacing of most areas inside the Williston Oil Basin.

    I think as far as Round Prairie wells go, you might be impressed with the
    4-805H I believe nearly 50k barrels in three months. Unless I read it wrong.

      You are reading that correctly: 50,000 bbls in less than three months.

      There's something else that is noteworthy about that well, also. I will post it later, but I'm watching "Columbo" at the moment. Smile.

    Hello, I am not familiar with the lingo here, but my family owns rights to 8-1224H; can you PLEASE tell me how many barrels its produced in the last 3 years, what each barrel is worth, and what the wells future looks like? Please and thank you so very much for all your help!

      I can't answer questions about what each barrel is worth; one can find that on the web looing for historical prices for WTI but each operator has its own contracts for its oil and they vary dramatically.
