Well it was supply that was decreasing, not demand. So much for Texas exceptionalism. This is unreal. Power out continuously for going on 24 hours in some areas creating deadly conditions during severe cold. The overall system is poorly engineered and managed. And little hope that anything will be done to improve matters given the hapless people in charge.-
Lots of problems; -from ERCOT website, power generation is going down this morning. -NG deliveries is being curtailed by rolling blackouts due to pump stations shutting off. Same thing happened happened with the Enron did rolling blackouts in California causing SFO airport nearly running out of jet fuel due to pump stations being shut down. -See that AC frequency is now back to 60hz, was below this level earlier today, this indicates heavy load, drops too much, will cause power plants to trip offline. -read a news clip that ERCOT does not heavily interface with outside power grids making it difficult to import power from other grids
You may be seeing cell phone towers shutting down. Although the have UPS backups, batteries will be going dead.
Coal...coal...coal. Don't have to worry about feed interruptions for several days. Big pile of coal sitting next to the plant. Can't inventory gas. Can coal.
We are running coal and nukes where I live. Those plants can run in an ice age. Nukes are too pricey to build new ones. But king coal is the way to go.
Agree completely. They predicted this record cold snap at least a week before it hit; plenty of time to fire up a coal plant. But by Friday, this will all be forgotten and the Californians coming to Texas will convince the powers that be that more wind farms are needed.
