"This Is Not A Drill" -- Google Paid $2.7 Billioin To Bring Back A Former Employee To Work On Cutting-Edge Projects -- October 10, 2026

Locator: 51902AI.

I mentioned this the other day: one of my pet peeves is having to listen all day to CNBC talking heads having little understanding of the sixth industrial revolution (AI) as Jensen Huang, Sam Altman others see it.

Almost every CNBC talking head seems to think the AI tsunami can't last much longer, that it's nothing more than a bubble, similar / identical to the 2000 dot.com debacle.

Two articles caught my attention yesterday.

First article, link here: from Shay Boloor -- AMD CEO Lisa Su is heading for South Korea to secure HBM4 supply from SKHY and Samsung as MI450 ramps with 432GB of memory per GPU.

Second article, link here:

Google really wanted pioneering AI researcher Noam Shazeer back.

The longtime employee left to start his own company but in 2024, Google paid $2.7 billion for him to return to work on cutting-edge projects, including its most powerful AI technology, Gemini.

Even that, though, couldn’t ensure that Shazeer got the computing resources he wanted.

Less than two years later, he sent a note to one of his teams saying that Google had cut what was allocated to them in favor of another project. Shortly thereafter, Shazeer left for rival OpenAI.

Compute, the industry shorthand for computing power, is the lifeblood of the AI boom, and it’s in short supply. Now fights over how to get more of it—and what projects to give priority to—are sending a powerful industry scrambling. Bitter rivals are forming new alliances, such as Elon Musk and Dario Amodei, whose companies worked together to secure computing power. Venture-capital firms are touting access to AI chips to woo startups. And power struggles are more frequent as companies compete in a worldwide treasure hunt for the tech industry’s most coveted resource.

“There’s a big gold rush happening at the moment,” said Evan Conrad, chief executive officer of San Francisco Compute. “It’s hard to fully comprehend the scale.”

Conrad’s company vets data centers and then rents their computing power to AI companies that range from the largest players like Nvidia to small startups like Standard Intelligence. Its chief technology officer, Eric Park, travels the globe in search of computing resources hiding where few else think to look.

In the spring, it was far-flung corners of rural America, where one promising new data center turned out to be AI servers humming inside what appeared to be a converted chicken coop. Then Manila in monsoon season, where Park’s car stalled in floodwater and he and his colleagues waded to safety, bags held over their heads. Eventually, a passing truck shuttled him to the airport, where he bought a new pair of shoes and boarded a flight to Taipei—to meet with a company building servers for the AI boom.

For the record: I love Gemini -- I use Gemini almost exclusively among the many chatbots which I have tried. Free version.

Back to the blog: Google doesn't pay $2.7 billion to entice one worker back to the company if this were a six-week project. Do the math, but if the $2.7 billion is one million dollars / year this equates to 2,700 years -- and that doesn't include cost of deploying that $2.7 billion -- and that's for one employee.

I honestly cannot get my mind around the dollars being spent in this sector.

Maybe The WSJ made a typographical error.

Raising The Alarm About The Dangers Of AI -- Nothing New Under The Sun -- October 9, 2026

Watching CNBC these days, one can be misled to thinking that all this talk about the risks of AI is something new. Hardly:

Nvidia Vs AMD: Flashback

From Stephen Witt's biography of Jensen Huang, c. 2025, chapter 14: "The Good Year," page 156:

"In 2016, Nvidia's stock price appreciated 224 percent, restoring Jensen Huang to glory and making a billionaire once again. Yet Nvidia was not the best-performing stock in the S&P that year. The title went to Nvidia's longtime rival AMD, which went up 309 percent. Huang didn't like coming in second. He redirected himself to victory and found it the next year. Revenues doubled, profits tripled, and the company launched new products at dizzying speed. Few companies anywhere, ever, could hope to have a year as successful as Nvidia had in 2017."

Lisa Su is CEO of AMD. She joined the company in 2012 and became president and CEO in 2014. AMD was founded in 1969 and went public in 1972.

Jensen Huang co-founded Nvidia in 1993.

The US Equity Market Is Surging After Final Read Of 2Q26 Inflation Data (PCE) -- Robinhood -- Company In The News Today -- September 30, 2026

    Locator: 51842INVESTING.

Becky Quick: Ms Quick had a huge "run" with BRK over the past twenty years. The tea leaves suggest she is looking for her next gravy train. It looks like it will be SI/AI but she will end up focusing on one company.

Quincy, Washington: folks may want to do a deep dive on Quincy -- Quincy, Washington transformed from a struggling agricultural farming town into a major digital data center hub starting in 2006, when Microsoft broke ground on its first major data center.

Company in the news today: Robinhood. 24-hour agentic trading over the weekend; app specifically "built" for new iPhone Duo (the Duo not yet released). "Full" US equity trading, 24-7, inaugurated by Robinhood. Did Schwab miss an opportunity?

    • 24/7 trading under the "auspices" of "Bruce Markets."

Trump's SI/AI summit: that group photo is amazing -- Jensen Huang on his immediate right; Elon Musk on his immedate left; and AMD/CEO immediately behind President Trump. And every SI/AI CEO at the table --

    Trump pressing for:

    • free electricity in all communities that have an LCD
    • teacher bonuses in communities with an LCD

    ***************************
    American Economy

Fed rate: may not hike in October, 2026. 90% likely in December. Heading for 7% mortgage rates. The SI/AI industry doesn't care. The housing industry is slowly being destroyed.

JOBS: September ADP private payrolls -- up 90,000 jobs in September vs 68,000 anticipated. We just can't slow this economy.

    PG&E in California, SI/AI buildout:

The 1.8 GW of new data center load that PG&E plans to operationalize by 2030 (primarily serving Silicon Valley) is vastly overshadowed by the growth exploding across Texas, Virginia, and Ohio.

While PG&E is intentionally pacing its growth and targeting smaller, high-confidence loads, other states are building gigawatt-scale, AI-driven mega-campuses.

    So, Where Are We?

Look what AAPL did today, in September:

More importantly look what AAPL has done in a year:

Now take a look at AMD, one day and one year charts to go along with the Apple charts above.

The question is raised: what happened on/about March 31, 2026 / April 1, 2026, that caused both stocks (and I assume many others) to start climbing rapidly. AI's explanation here, link here. Link: https://share.google/aimode/Tj5fUnsR5s5aKC1Og.

    • Fed tightening;
    • war likely to get worse before it gets better;
    • diesel: as bad as it gets and it may get worse.

BRB-B: down $3 in early trading -- not even worth wasting my time posting the graphic. Later: not a good day for BRKB -- this was after the close --

    AAPL: new target -- $380.

BRKB On A Huge Day For The Market -- September 17, 2026

    Locator: 51749BRKB.

    Updates

September 18, 2026: this explains BRK's move yesterday. Today, it is announced that Warren Buffett has stepped down from Berkshire Hathaway. The stock, BRKB, dropped $10 / share yesterday; today, in pre-market trading, appears to have stabilized. If the US equity market ends green today, one would expect the same for BRK, once this news is absorbed.

September 17, 2026: Samsung fans not impressed. Samsung fans miss the point; it appears the writer of this article also missed the point. Link here.

For Apple fans, that’s just the way of the world. While Samsung routinely pipes up around Apple’s phone releases, iPhone users don’t even know when Samsung Galaxy releases occur, Richard Bruckner, a comedian and iPhone 17 Pro owner, posited in a viral social-media post.

    Original Post

Safe haven: for elderly mom-and-pop retail investors it seems that AAPL has become the "safe haven" for investing, taking that title from BRK-B. See disclaimer.

On a huge day for the market:

    BRK-B:

    AAPL:

    And SNOW:

AMD: today, AMD and Intel are surging. AMD is particularly impressive. In 1984: at age 20, Jensen Huang begins his career at AMD. Stays there for two years. Today's CEOs of Nvidia and AMD are first cousins once removed (first cousins one generation apart).

    Apple -- AAPL -- Chart Of The Day -- September 12, 2026

    Locator: 51720APPLE.

I think this is one of the most important questions an investor can explore today: Are the new products and the new chips that Apple is rolling out this year (2026 and 2027) optimized for any one chatbot?

With which AI in the news (Gemini, OpenAI, Grok, Anthropic, etc.) is Apple most closely related? In other words, exactly with what large AI names is Apple most closely aligned? There are then many rabbit holes one can go down. The next question: Geminin uses predominantly what chips and what operating system? The weekend is just getting started!

    The chart of the day:

    ********************************
    Apple Vs Dell

This is being re-posted because the AI links below are incredible; many are of  the "TLDR" nature. And, again, I'm not sure if the links work. Some of my extended family members say they cannot access the links. On my ten-year-old (?) iPad Pro, the links work incredibly well. Just saying. And, no, I'm not buying a new iPad Pro any time soon.

    See disclaimer.

    Updates

September 12, 2026: I simply do not have time to post all the information that AI can provide.

I will provide links where I can but I'm not sure the links work. Apple and Dell are now direct competitors for LDC / AI infrastructure at the enterprise level. Apple and Dell are perhaps the leaders in this particular area, and if not, will likely be the leaders sooner than later. I asked the question. The answer at this link: https://share.google/aimode/3dayD4qEDmwHDwNLP.
Again, it's absolutely fascinating and again, I'm not sure the link works; it works for me; some extended family members tell me it does not work for them.
If I am correct, that may help account for AAPL's incredible run-up in share price this past week, and a P/E of 38 which I have not seen in recent memory (the past twenty years?) if my memory serves me. Generally, AAPL's P/E runs about 28 - 34, seldom getting above 32, and every talking head on CNBC seems to repeat the mantra that a "30-P/E is very expensive." I think I've heard that for the past ten years. See disclaimer.
Some say the run-up in the share price of AAPL was this: investors see AAPL as a safe haven during this period of semiconductor (hardware) vs software. I have trouble believing that considering how much the mainstream business media seems to dislike Apple as an investment. At least that's my "take." I'm usually wrong, but it's a starting point.

September 12, 2026: after the huge run-up this past week, I was curious about Apple's revenues for latest quarter and estimates for next quarter (ending September 30, 2026). The current P/E for AAPL is 38 -- the highest I think I've seen in recent memory.

The September quarter will NOT include revenue from any of the new models recently announced, and earnings could be affected by a) supply chain issues; b) folks putting off purchases until new products are available; and, c) folks putting off purchases pending holiday gift-buying. It's possible folks took advantage of all the sales prior to new models being announced at the beginning of the school year. The Mac Mini sales are a huge mystery.

    Original Post

    Fascinating story.

    Link here.  The link: https://share.google/aimode/WJmBLUJnWzLFvCnNk.

It has an "https" URL so it should work but when I share it with some of my extended family members they say they can't open it. I don't know.

This link may only work for me. I don't know. I'm trying to share the link with all but it seems "sketchy," if that's the right word.

I was curious because I was curious. how Dell stole the non-Apple laptop / desktop away from IBM and HP.

Dell (DELL NYSE) market cap: $360 billion.

Apple (AAPL NASDAQ) market cap: $4.85 trillion.

Wow, I wasn't looking. I see that AAPL has surged in the past few months.

Being announced over night two data points: link here. The link: https://share.google/aimode/UUnnLaYPRQPmB3J8f. Again, it has an "https" URL so it should work but feedback suggests it does not work for all. Don't understand.

    • Anthropic's IPO is getting closer and closer though delayed until October; rumor
    • Jensen Huang says he will be a $10-billion anchor investor in the IPO; fact (he said it, link here).

Quick: Anthropic's "full name" is Anthropic PBC. What does the "PBC" mean and how does that affect its business strategy???

The reason Anthropic shows up on a blog about Dell: Anthropic will have to duplicate what Dell did some years ago.

By market cap, the trillion-dollar club:

    • #1: NVDA
    • the #2 race: AAPL vs GOOG

The full list (which is already out-of-date) after this week's run for AAPL was from AI yesterday:

    Top Ten Trillion-Dollar Companies
    • Nvidia (NVDA): ~$5.1 trillion  (at close, Sept 11, 2026: $5.26 trillion)
