Three (3) New Permits -- The Williston Basin, North Dakota, USA

Active rigs: 186 (significant fall from over the weekend; down four)

  • Fields: North Souris (Bottineau), Red Wing Creek (McKenzie)

Wells that came off confidential list today were reported earlier; see sidebar at the right.

  1. It appears to me there about 183 or 184 rigs that are capable of drilling to the oil pay zones. There are also usually 4 to 6 rigs that come and go from the active rig list that
    are drilling deep enough to set surface casing (i.e. 2200 in the central basin). This would also include smaller rigs drilling salt water disposal wells. The current number of larger rigs that drill to the pay zones remains fairly
    steady in the low 180's.

    1. I agree.

      "Significant fall from over the weekend" might have been a bit excessive, but the number of rigs has been going up or down by one or two wells/day, and had actually stayed at 189 for several days last week, so the drop to 186 from 190 surprised me, especially in light of earlier statements this year suggesting we might see the number go back up toward 220.
