On a drive from Dickinson to Belle Fource, the cattle to people ratio hugely favors cattle. It is a place to get away from people. There is plenty of room for 1,000 more head of cattle or 1,000,000 more people.
Cars? Trucks? Few. Slightly more than none on the road this week.
Check prices on motels in Spearfish. Cheap.
People will show up in summer and winter tourist seasons.
Tell me about it! (as they say, in that part of the world)
My father was born and grew up in Newell, South Dakota (Spearfish area).
We drove to Newell every August when I was growing up. Talk about dry, desolate, empty. And to this day, the most beautiful country there is, in my mind.
There's room for 1,000 more head of cattle, though I don't know if there's enough grass; sheep do better. But not very economic.
Went through there in June once after a wet spring. Thought it was heaven on earth, as there was every color of wildflowers in a sea of green. Spectacular. And inspiring. Until that trip, had never seen any plant color but brown.

ReplyDeleteIt's amazing what a bit of moisture/rain can do.
