Haystack Butte -- Unitized -- BR's HBU Badlands, HBU Hazel Wells -- April 6, 2026

Locator: 50444B.

The BR HBU Badlands and HBU Hazel wells will be tracked here.

It's a bit unclear, but I believe the entire Haystack Butte is unitized. As another example, the Grinnell-Bakken Unit is managed by XTO.

Random Update Of A QEP Hazel Well In The Helis Grail -- November 10, 2018

I've blogged about the QEP Hazel wells on many occasions. If interested, click on "Hazel."

For newbies, this is a good example of a Bakken life-cycle:
  • drill
  • frack
  • produce
  • re-frack
  • produce
  • repeat
This well was recently re-fracked:
  • 22371, 3,668, QEP, Hazel 13-34/27H, Grail, t5/13; cum 488K 9/18; the second frack: sundry form received August 3, 2018; 100 mesh, 8 million lbs; 100 mesh CRC, 727,000 lbs; 30 stages; IP for this re-frack not provided;
The re-frack resulted in a max production of 27,368 bbls in one month; the original frack resulted in max production of 27,119 bbls in one month.  To the best of my knowledge, based on what readers tell me, we do not see this in conventional wells. This is like getting a brand new well for free except for the cost of the re-frack.

The well:
  • 16656, 411, XTO, Hazel 44X-22, t10/07; cum 326K 5/18; off-line as of 3/18;
This is a great well. It was taken off-line in June, 2017, suggesting to me that XTO may be planning on fracking in the area. If there is new activity in the area, it will also be interesting to check in on XTO's Linda 41X-22, #19504 at the same time.

The wells likely to be fracked are all on the SI/NC list. Easternmost of the three or four wells of interest is XTO's JMB 14X-15B, #31898.

A little bit of rambling. Back on July 2, 2016, I wrote about #16656:
July 2, 2016: this well (#16656, Hazel 44X-22) has had some jumps in production, especially a 4-fold jump in 8/12 without explanation. There are wells in the area on SI/NC list but the timing doesn't seem right. Check #16656 in a few months.
Taking a closer look at the wells in the area under discussion, it is interesting that a neighboring well, XTO's Linda 41X-22, #19504, had a similar bump at the very same time (1/12) even though the well was fracked almost a year earlier. Note: Linda is a Three Forks well. Hazel is a three-lateral Middle Bakken well.

I have a hunch that explains the jump in production in both Linda and Hazel in 8/12 but that's way beyond my headlights, so no comments. And don't ask.

Presidential speech today: link here

California bullet train:over the weekend it was revealed that the new estimate has now hit $126 billion; link here.

In a 60 Minutes report, officials now put the cost at $126 billion. That is more than Amtrak has received from the federal government since 1971. It also far exceeds the $33 billion figure given to voters in 2008

Amtrak: the entire nation -- from the --

  • from the Northeast Corridor to Florida;
  • from Florida to Texas to California;
  • from California to Seattle;
  • from Seattle to Chicago to NYC.

Massive mistake and mismanagement. This rivals anything the Minnesota state government did:

  • an aide admits it was a blunder; link here.
  • no track has been laid yet;
  • massive cement (stone) pillars rising from the ground remind folks of "Stonehenge" and thus the new nickname: "Stonehenge" or "railhenge."

Governor Newsom did not return calls to the 60 Minutes producers. The tea leaves suggest:

  • Gavin is distancing himself from the project as he nears decision to announce US presidential run; and,
  • it is more and more unlikely this project will ever be finished;
  • it most likely will simply not get more funding and attention will turn elsewhere.

Fortunately the Federal government saw fit to quit funding

As of early 2026, approximately $15 billion to $16 billion has been spent on the California High-Speed Rail project. The funding has come primarily from state sources, with roughly $2.5 billion to $3.6 billion provided by federal grants, while a significant portion of planned federal funding was rescinded.

New England, natural gas, and Enbridge: update here. The blog at that site will soon go dark. Link here.

Finances: without question, that one-half trillion dollar financing announcement announced yesterday is an incredibly huge development. The only reason it garnered such little media attention: a) it was Jensen Huang / Nvidia again; and, the money involved in AI deals is already measured in tens of billions of dollars.

So, we'll see. My little understanding of this, in addition to everything else, this is huge for CoreWeave, and, of course, Oracle.

RBN Energy: new rule on decommissioning offshore assets aims to ease burden on US producers. Link here. Archived.

Long-standing U.S. rules around decommissioning offshore oil and gas platforms were rewritten by the Biden administration in 2024, a move designed to ensure that owners of those assets bear the often significant cost of deactivating them. But the Trump administration paused their implementation in early 2025, promising to revise or overhaul them as part of a broader effort to reduce federal regulations and boost domestic energy production. In today’s RBN blog, we’ll examine the issue and the changes included in the administration’s proposed rule, which aims to reduce the regulatory burden without shifting decommissioning liabilities to taxpayers.

As we noted in Back to Life, most U.S. offshore E&P business occurs in the U.S. Gulf, which generates about 14% of U.S. crude oil output. The federal government regulates most of that activity along the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Its oversight begins about 3.5 miles off the coast of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi; for Texas and Florida, its jurisdiction starts about 10 miles offshore (see black line hugging the coast in Figure 1 below). The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) are tasked with managing Gulf activity, from overseeing lease sales to expanding production areas to issuing rules on what E&Ps must do with wells, platforms and associated infrastructure once their projects have run their course. (Note: Yellow dots in Figure 1 indicate active leases.)

Hess Reports Five Completed DUCs -- September 18, 2018

Apple iPhone review. CNBC talking heads did a nice review of the new iPhones. They only got one thing wrong. They keep talking about how expensive the phones are. "No one" has to pay those prices. We've gone through this before. These phones are heavily subsidized by the carrier. Monthly payments as low as $0 in some cases but I assume the brand new, best iPhones can be had for less than $50 / month ... let's check ... wow, I was wrong, really wrong. One can get the brand-new iPhone Xs for $0 / month:
