FIU: What Does This CLR Acronym Mean? -- August 21, 2021

Updates

August 22, 2021: it appears Continental Resources has "FI" units in all their plays. My hunch becomes more likely simply: "fill-in units." See this very, very good article from 2017

August 22, 2021: the more I look at this, the more I think a reader's "guess" that this simply stands for Fill-In Unit" is exactly right.

Original Post

Continental Resources has at least three major drilling projects with "FIU" in the name of the wells in these units.

For example:

  • 38219, conf, CLR, Plano FIU, 4-28H, southwest side of Williston;
  • 38140, conf, CLR, Dennis FIU, 12-8H, Dunn County, north of Killdeer;
  • 37945, conf, CLR, Brangus FIU, 14-11H2, Elm Creek, McKenzie County;

As another example, the LCU in some CLR names refers to the "Long Creek Unit" wells, southeast of Williston.

The FIU similarly designates a drilling unit. I have spent a long time trying to figure it out, never could, gave up, figured that the "F" referred to "federal." And then moved on.

But now a reader asks. The reader asked the NDIC but they were unable to answer the question, saying one would have to ask Continental Resources.

Before I do that, and I probably won't in any event, I'll see if any readers know.

The first reader to correctly answer this question will get a lifetime subscription to the blog.

The FIU north of Killdeer is tracked here.
