I've been to "too-many-to-count" Veterans Day events over the last 40 years and the one at our granddaughters' school today was incredibly good; probably one of the best, if not the best that I have attended.
Thank you. It was an interesting day. It was incredibly enjoyable to hear first-hand some stories from a gentleman who was at Pear Harbor, December 7, 1941. He says his ship was sunk that day; he watched it sink in seven minutes. He says the Navy thought so highly of him, they assigned him to a new ship.
On that ship's second voyage, it was torpedoed.
He says, then he realized he was in an "unsafe occupation."
He spent the entire day visiting various classrooms (kindergarten to fifth grade) and the children could not get enough of him. He had no connection to the school (no grandchildren attended) but he was "discovered" by a school employee when she helped take some WWII veterans back to the WWII memorial in Washington, DC, on an Honor Flight.
My dad was fortunate to go on a Honor Flight -- last year; one of the highlights of his life. Maybe I will post this story later:
