EOG, Scandia, Legacy, Bottineau County, ND (USA), Bakken, Spearfish Formation

3Q11: At Bottineau County, North Dakota, the three Spearfish horizontal wells brought on production in June 2011 continue to produce above type curve, with average rates over the first five months of production averaging 82 Boe per day per well. Legacy has one rig drilling in the area and expects to drill up to six wells before year end.

Legacy has 50,836 net undeveloped acres in the area which could lead to potentially more than 570 net unrisked horizontal locations, based on eight wells per section spacing. Competitors in Manitoba, less than two miles away, are developing the Spearfish with 24 wells per section.

It should be noted that EOG has canceled all Scandia-named well permits or let them expire. There are no Scandia wells being drilled by EOG, and it's my impression that EOG has blown off the Spearfish for the time being, at least in North Dakota.

NOTICE: after the initial flurry of activity in these Spearfish wells, there was a dearth of reports. Slowly but surely things began looking more and more bleak. And now there are rumors that EOG is pulling the pumps and shutting in the three Scandia wells that they have drilled.  Posted December 26, 2010.

ORIGINAL POSTING (with some updates along the way)

For a few months now, daily activity reports list "Scandia" wells operated by EOG in the Souris oil field in Bottineau County, North Dakota. These are going to be interesting to follow. So far, to date (August 30, 2010):
  • 18701, 304, Crescent Point Energy; Scandia 3-36H, great well for a Spearfish, Souris, t3/10; cum 21K 9/17;
  • 18720, PNC, EOG, Scandia 2-26H, Souris,

  • 19163, PNC, EOG, Scandia 4-34H, Souris,
  • 19164, PNC, EOG, Scandia 5-34H, Souris,
  • 19165, PNC, EOG, Scandia 6-34H, Souris,

For more background on EOG's interest in Bottineau County and perhaps the Spearfish Formation, click here (March 11, 2010) and here (February 10, 2010). I sure hope these wells are good wells; they're shallow and EOG is drilling them in days, rather than weeks.

From wikipedia: Scandia Township is a civil township in Bottineau County in North Dakota (USA). As of the 2000 census, its population was 54. [With all the EOG oil workers, the population has probably doubled.]  Scandia Township: T164N-78W. Due to its location along the Canadian border, this township has only 6 full sections (31 - 36) and about a third of six other sections (25 - 30).

******

Spearfish/Madison Pool: The NDIC says both the Scandia 3-36H and the Scandia 1-34H targeted the Spearfish-Madison (or Spearfish/Madison) pool. That pool is quite thick, extending all the way from the shallower Spearfish, all the way down to the Madison, which sits directly above the Bakken Pool (Bakken and Three Forks formations).  See the stratigraphic map here

Error? From the Bakken Blog, September 24, 2010:
According to North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources, EOG's well, Sikes State 43-16H, 154-R91W, is producing at 304 bopd. EOG's Sandia 1-34H, 34-164-78 is producing at 261 bopd.
That's what the Bakken Blog says. It has to be in error. The article is about the Spearfish formation and EOG, and yet the Sikes State well is a Whiting well in the Sanish oil field, probably targeting the middle Bakken or the Three Forks Sanish. I sent them a comment asking.

  1. Recently inhereited mineral and oil rights to three sections in Scandia in T164N-78W, we are wondering what type of activity is going on?

  2. To the above list I will add two more EOG permits in the Souris field, T164N-78W:

    19261, Scandia 46-35H
    19262, Scandia 48-35H

The IP for the first of thses Spearfish wells was at the high end for IPs that have been reported from the same formation just across the border in Manitoba.

In a very recent posting, I noted that some readers are not enormored with these wells but I don't have any more information than what I've posted.

  3. The most recent posting regarding these wells can be found be searching "dead horse" on my blog.

  4. I am interested in purchasing minerals in 164-78. Can you provide contact information?

  5. Maybe someone who reads the blog will see this. I don't have that information.

  6. Any updates? My Fiancees grandpa owns a couple hundred acres north of souris, east of landa in scandia township. Last I heard a well was drilled on the section next to his....

  7. Except for these, I haven't seen anything new. There will probably be a lot of information in 4 - 6 months when they come off confidential list. EOG holds things close to chest and generally don't offer press releases early on wells. In addition, these wells will probably be nice for the Spearfish, but probably not exciting enough for a press release.

The folks over at the Bakken Shale Discussion Group might have more information.

  8. Thanks. So you're telling me I shouldn't quit my day job. Some reports I have read estimate between 2 and 7,000 wells being drilled in the souris area in the next 5 years. I guess i'll beleive it when I see it.

  9. Depends on how many mineral acres you have. And the reason oilmen love what they do, is because there's always the chance for a huge one. You never know. If price of oil keeps trending up, there should be plenty of wells, and you may end up with nice steady income. You never know.

Good luck. Let me know if you hear anything.

  10. I'm new to the whole oil business, can you give me some insight on the spearfish well that was released from confidential status yesterday. Why there was no bopd listed. Just a measurement. Thanks!

  11. The writer is referring to this one:

    #19051 – EOG RESOURCES, INC., EIDSVOLD 1-10H, SESE 10-162N-78W, BOTTINEAU CO. 6015’ - Spearfish

Others may have a better answer. I see this periodically; a well comes off the confidential list, but other than a depth there is not whole lot more offered. I assume that the six-month deadline was reached, so the company had to report the status of the well. This tells me that they have reached a total depth of 6,015 feet, and have not yet had any production, or at least any production that they were required to report. I assume we will see that information soon.

Again, this is a Spearfish formation well, so the IP will be small compared to Bakken wells, but cost significantly less to drill.

Perhaps someone will provide additional information. The Bakken Shale Discussion Group (linked at the sidebar on the right) is very, very helpful if you want to ask folks there if they know any more.

  12. Incidentally, the Eidsvold well is a wildcat about six miles south of the Scandia wells.

  13. Thank you. I didn't make it to the area over thanksgiving due to a big winter storm so christmas is the next scheduled trip. Hope to get out and do some exploring. Looking forward to a few scandia wells coming off the confidencial list, specifically 19099, on the 21st... Happy Holidays, and keep up the good work!

  14. Although I hold no mineral rights, I am also very interested in seeing the results.

  15. Hi Bruce just wanted to thank you for all the information you provide,I check everyday I'am very interested on what is happening in 164-78-34 35 36 anyways thanks again

  16. Thank you for your kind comments. EOG "owns" these three sections and as noted above, EOG holds information very close to their chest, as they say.

In addition, the IPs of these wells will be low (based on results so far) suggesting that we won't see a lot of early press releases or news stories.

I don't have a good sense of the Spearfish formation. It appears that for oil companies the formation will be profitable due to economies of scale and shallow drilling.

Economies of scale: it appears much of EOG activity in 34-35-36 are multi-well pads: two or three wells on one pad.

Shallow drilling: they say that they can drill these wells in days rather than weeks.

If the wells are less expensive to drill, they will make money for EOG, but with moderate IPs, mineral owners won't see royalty checks people talk about in the Bakken, except for the fact, they will have several wells on one spacing unit. That might offset the low IPs.

Since I last updated my data above, three more wells have been added to the confidential list, Scandia 2-26H, Scandia 40-35, and Scandia 42-36. I don't know anything more about these.

The folks over at the Bakken Shale Discussion Group might have more specific information. I, too, am curious what kind of activity is being seen locally.

It looks like NDIC is updating their GIS map server at the moment, so I will have to come back later to see how many rigs are in the area (I assume one or two) and if the three wells on the confidential list have a date assigned.

  17. I do not think EOG has done anything in Bottineau County for several months. They were busy for a while, but they seem to have pulled out several months ago.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That wouldn't surprise me. After the shellacking EOG took in the third quarter, they probably made some major course corrections. But they will be back.

  19. Looks like they hit a gusher...of water.

  20. Yes, they sure did (hit a gusher of water). With wells that are hydraulically fractured, the initial return iincludes huge amounts of water. You see that on all the initial reports.

As an example, I simply picked the most recent reporting well, the Peterson well (http://groups.google.com/group/bakken-shale-discussion/browse_thread/thread/62eb406d235e2b86) in the Sanish which had an oil IP of 1,500 bbls, and a water IP of 1,100 bbls, but all that water is simply fracking fluid which will eventually go away. But it is expensive to haul away.

  22. Time will tell but right now it looks bleak. What is confusing is the seeming lack of success on the US side of the border compared to the reported success on the Canadian side.

  23. Some test wells were drilled in Wells County in ND in the 50's and we said to be dry and plugged. Where would one find out where they are located? Also is there any drilling going on close to Wells County as I have heard there is drilling up by Rugby but can't confirm this.
    Thank you kindly!
    John

  24. I would start with NDIC's GIS server. The NDIC site is linked at the sidebar at the right.

  25. What kind of activity is there around 160N 82W?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No activity in this township, unless there is leasing activity not yet shown on the NDIC GIS map server, but wow, just one township north, in the small Wiley oil field there were a lot of wells drilled in previous booms with some great Madison wells.

I may have to do a stand-alone on the Wiley field some day. For archival purposes. Vertical and short directional wells.
