A Closer Look At CLR's Permits In The Past 24 Hours -- February 9, 2021

Back on October 10, 2019, about eighteen months ago, this from the blog:

CLR is drilling the heck out of the Bakken right now, but that's because CLR only has the Bakken and Oklahoma, and Oklahoma is not that great compared to the Bakken. The Bakken is making Harold Hamm/CLR a ton of money every month. I think he's a lot like my father when my father was seventy-five years old.
Harold Hamm is now in in his 70's and I think he wants to go out with a bang. I've never seen any operator in the Bakken drill like he's drilling now. My dad did the same thing as he got older, taking many more investment risks than he did when he was younger and raising a family. Harold Ham is 73 years old; one wonders if he set some kind of target for his 75th birthday?

Harold Hamm turned 75 years young on December 11, 2020.

Between October, 2019, and, February, 2021, a lot has changed. It takes six months to a year to put together an oil and gas permit package. The permit applications for these twenty-four wells may have been completed years ago. If so, Harold Hamm was simply waiting for the moment to drop the hammer.

Perhaps it was the election in November, 2020. Maybe it was the executive orders signed by President Biden (it's my understanding that CLR does not ship through the DAPL; I could be wrong). Maybe it was the price of WTI. For the past two years Harold Hamm has been predicting much higher oil prices. He has either been very wrong or very early. If he now thinks he was simply early and agrees with Saudi Arabia that there will be a supply deficit by the end of the year, it would explain these twenty-four permits in the past two days.

Note: many of these permits may be canceled before the wells are drilled.

Here are the permits in the past two days:

  • 38117, conf, CLR, Dennis FIU 13-8H1, Cedar Coulee, NWNE 8-147-96, 208 FNL 2054 FEL,

There is one existing well in the1280-acre drilling unit in that area:

  • 16605, 418, CLR, Dennis 44-8H, Cedar Coulee, t7/07; cum 89K 12/20

By the way, what field were we looking at when we said Harold Hamm was drilling the heck out of the Bakken?

It was Murphy Creek. A cursory look at that field doesn't show much about which to get excited.

So where is CLR drilling now?

  • 37378, Rodney 7-29H, Cedar Coulee, NENW 32-147-96; 290 FNL 1695 FWL;
  • 37398, Rodney 9-29H, Cedar Coulee, NENW 32-147-96; 650 NFL, 1555 FEL;
  • 37606, Carus 3-28H, Cedar Coulee, SESW 28-147-96; 442 FSL 1466 FWL;

    1. As noted, he's either very wrong or very early. He's been talking about $100 oil for two years. There may be something else going on here but I'm not going to mention it.
