I honestly do not understand the thinking. NYC should be on the forefront of "green energy." As should Washington, DC, and Boston, MA. The entire I-95 corridor should be "green."
Almost all of the Las Vegas cabs run on propane. I did a bit of checking on the New York cabs. The basic one is a Ford Crown Victoria that has a wheelbase stretched a few inches. At the current time 30% of NYC cabs are hybrid. They gave the hybrids a "Checker exemption" where age and size requirements were waived as long as they hybrid cab passed inspection. "New engine prep packages will allow taxi and other fleet operators to select conversion packages that allow for either compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied propane gas (LPG). Both will help lower any fleet's operating costs as well as being good for the environment. The EPA says that CNG results in 30-40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions. CNG also burns cleaner than gasoline, as does propane."
It should be the other way around. Non-hybrids and non-electric vehicles need waivers to continue operating. Smile. If they were serious about CO2, etc.
