For The Archives -- Lithium-Sulfur Batteries -- July 28, 2022

This seems a bit bogus but we will post it for the archives and see how this plays out.

Lithium-sulfur batteries?

Sodium-sulfur batteries?

After decades of study and billions of dollars spent on R&D for EV batteries, I have a natural (healthy?) skepticism of "an accidental discovery."

Apple is opening a new development site in Jerusalem, Israel, to develop new Apple silicon chips for future Macs.

Over time, chip companies will marginalize China.

  1. Bruce, I saw the following posted on a facebook tread. I wanted to pass it along to you to see want you or any of your readers thought about it. Thanks

If the boss had a Tesla made in the last 8 years, his battery is covered with his 8 year unlimited mileage battery warranty. Tesla batteries routinely last over 400,000 miles. They are replaced when they reach 80% capacity. Then they are sold to people who use them for electricity storage in solar and wind systems. You can buy/sell the used Tesla batteries on eBay for upwards of $25,000. Last I heard, for Tesla to put in a new battery costs $20,000. Used Tesla batteries cost more than new ones? Yes, because Tesla does not sell them over the counter. There is huge demand for used Tesla batteries. You don’t actually have to replace a Tesla battery, when they fail, they can usually be fixed by third party repair shops. The Tesla “battery” is actually a huge case that includes something like 7,000 plus individual battery cells. One of those cells may have a problem and replacing or disconnecting that cell would fix the problem and at far less cost than a full battery pack replacement. If the boss wants to fix the car, he has lots of options. If he wants to sell the car, there is tons of demand. Many people are afraid of electric cars because they are new and not well understood by most consumers. To compound the misconceptions is all the oil company propaganda spreading all sorts of misinformation to scare people to not buy electric cars. Oil companies hate electric cars and for good reason. As Teslas proliferate, people will start to understand them and then the fear goes away.

    1. That's fine. Most insurance companies assume about 12,000 miles per car per year, average across the country, but let's assume 25,000 miles / year. 400,000 miles / 25,000 = 16 years. I hope the upholstery and body hold up for 16 years, and owners don't get tired of driving the same old car for sixteen years. And just think, I generally drive less than 5,000 miles per year, thus the same old car will last me 80 years. I'm sold.
