Wow, look at Montana! Number 1. And Wyoming, #2!
Followed by
- Louisiana
- Mississippi
- Arizona (huge surprise)
I was surprised to not see the following in the top five:
- West Virginia (but it's still #9)
- Hawaii (and it comes in dead last; those tourism dollars, fees, taxes, on hotel rooms, rental cars)
- North Dakota (comes in at #44; one wonders the number before the Bakken boom)
- Kansas (despite all those farm subsidies, comes in at #48)

Guess it depends on how govt aid is qualified. Montana has the largest per capita population of US veterans of any state. If their retirements/disability income is counted, the graph makes sense.
ReplyDeleteIf Fed retirement/disability is counted Arizona makes sense with the snowbird-retirement community there. Surprised Florida isnt higher- maybe Florida is where all the self made rich retire to, with their privately held pension plans
