The Dickinson Press is reporting:
North Dakota will get a special present today, its 124th birthday, when
the nuclear-powered attack submarine, the USS North Dakota, is
christened in Groton, Conn. It’s the second U.S. Navy ship to be named
for the state. The first was a battleship that was in service from 1910
until 1923.
The ship is part of the Virginia-class attack submarines, designed to
seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships. It will carry
Tomahawk missiles, as well as torpedoes and other munitions.
Home port: Fort Lincoln, North Dakota, on the Missouri River, 7 miles south of Mandan
Fort Lincoln! Too Funny.
ReplyDeleteI have to give credit to another reader who thought of home-porting the USS North Dakota in Lake Sakakawea. Smile. Thank you for taking time to write.
